Chael Sonnen Has Told Too Many Lies for the NSAC

(Photo by Jon Kopaloff/Zuffa LLC/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images)

It looks like Chael Sonnen's lies have caught up with him again. After failing a drug test after UFC 117 he was suspended by the California Athletic Commission. He managed to get the suspension reduced by appearing before the CSAC, but in doing so he made some claims about having had conversations with Keith Kizer, the Executive Director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Those claims were false.

He also pled guilty to a felony on a federal money laundering charge and has been "suspended" by the UFC while he awaits sentencing on April 8th.

The UFC was exploring the possibility of Sonnen coming back to coach The Ultimate Fighter opposite the similarly-if-not-equally-controversial Michael BispingI wrote about the difficulties that created for NSAC ED Kizer the other day. Basically the whole project hinged on Sonnen being able to convince Kizer that he should be willing to license a man who had perjured himself under oath during his CSAC hearing and done it by invoking Kizer's name as initially reported by Cage Side Seats

We live in an era of captured government when everyone expects government regulators to do the bidding of large corporations, but Sonnen has apparently gone a bridge too far for Kizer who is now commenting on the outcome of the meeting between he, Sonnen and UFC officials three weeks ago.

From MMA Junkie:

"With his explanations, I don't know how productive of a meeting it was. I really did expect a much more constructive meeting out of that. But it just wasn't there. I think Zuffa tried; I know we tried. I put the blame completely on Mr. Sonnen."
...
"His point was, 'Well, you and I have never talked before right now, but I don't think I lied,'" Kizer said.

"Then he gave some very strange story and claimed, 'My manager and you talked about therapeutic exemptions, and therefore, I just used the wrong word. I should have said 'my' instead of 'I.' As in 'my manager' instead of 'I.'

"I was very straight with him, saying, 'That's a ridiculous explanation.'"

Kizer also said that Sonnen would have to appear before a full hearing of the NSAC to get a second's license (required to coach TUF) and that he would have to formally address his statements to the CSAC, his felony conviction and his accusations against Referee Josh Rosenthal after his loss to Paulo Filho at WEC 31.

Will Cooling at Inside Fights had some commentary on the prospect of a full hearing for Sonnen:

Such a thorough investigation into whether Sonnen is a man with the character worthy of fighting in the Octagon is long overdue. Repeatedly over the past twelve months and before he has simply lied, lied, lied. Alarmingly that was clear in the build up to the his match with Anderson Silva at UFC 117, with (to pick just two examples) Sonnen was caught lying about not having a twitter account and accusing Lance Armstrong of taking performance enhancing drugs. And yet this pathological pattern of deceit was ignored by the MMA media who were too busy falling in love with his wisecracks and aggressive attitude.

Hopefully following Kizer leads MMA journalists will now start asking the tough questions they should have been asking from the start. Not least there should be a proper look into Sonnen's testimony back on December 2nd. We need to know whether the evidence provided by his doctor was credible given that that the doctor was a local practitioner who seemingly lacked basic knowledge of the side effects of prolonged anabolic steriod use. We need to know why an Olympic level athlete believes its appropriate to secretly inject himself with testosterone in fearsomely large doses. Above all we need to know how a person that since childhood was should have been signficiantly weaker than the average male due to delayed puberty caused by Hypogonadism, had such a glittering athletic career.

There are so many questions that have to be asked as one after another of Chael Sonnen's lies are exposed. Make no mistake about it, as his lies unravel Sonnen is fighting for his very career. And the fact that these lies have been so self defeating shines a light onto Sonnen's character. To put it simply he lies not because its in his interests but because its in his nature.

Kaleb Kelchner at Cage Side Seats added:

Why is it that every guy I know accused of money laundering never lies, just misspeaks? I have no qualms with Sonnen being refused a spot as coach on The Ultimate Fighter, even though it may just be a big talker like him that would spark some interest in the show once again. It would also set a poor example for the UFC to place two fighters who are currently under fire for recent actions in such an esteemed position as coach on TUF. I wouldn't be surprised to see Bisping included still, well, so long as they can find a coach who'd be willing to antagonize him enough to force him to play ball. I'm quite certain though, if Sonnen had come across humbled, and apologetic, we'd likely see him paired with the Brit on season 14 of TUF.

Mayhem Miller has already volunteered to fill Sonnen's shoes, but I doubt the UFC would put such a hard push behind a fighter whose only UFC fight was a welterweight bout six years ago. Then again it certainly makes more business sense than Yushin Okami or Brian Stann as coaches. The winner of Wanderlei Silva vs Chris Leben at UFC 132 would be ideal but I think taping of the show needs to start too soon for that.

As for Sonnen, everything hinges on his sentencing in the felony case on April 8th. Provided that his sentence will allow him to compete, I expect he and the UFC will take the wiser course and avoid trying to get Chael licensed to fight in Nevada for any reason.

It's very sad that Sonnen's personal failings have so thoroughly torpedoed his career. Ironically it was Sonnen's knack for making preposterous claims in public in the build up to UFC 117 that made him a star.

this...

it’s just not interesting anymore. even without all the drama (which i prefer to not have anyway) the shows is cut horrible. it barely shows them training which is the second biggest thing to seeing them fight. it feels like it looks and is shot the exact same way as always. it’s pretty effing dull.

There's value in keeping UFC on cable television almost constantly.

If TUF were to be scrapped, there needs to be a UFC episodic program to take its place for no other reason then to keep the UFC brand out there.

Couldn’t they just show fights every week? I really hate TUF, it’s gotta be bad for the sport (yeah I went there).

Every post related above mine is written by people that are not business savvy

TUF is and WILL continue to remain the Trojan Horse that finds it’s way into millions of homes every week, once a week.

You’re only as relevant as your last fight/event/reminder in this very ADHD society.

Hey Dana! Keep on, keepin’ on!

That's assuming Spike will want to keep them

Due to this season’s disappointing opening number featuring the UFC’s biggest star who did a ton of promotional work on network tv, Spike aren’t going to want to pay top dollar for TUF. Unless things turn around it wouldn’t surprise me if Spike will offer UFC significantly less for a new programming agreement.

by KJ Gould on Apr 7, 2011 6:18 AM EDT up reply actions

I dunno

Spike will do whatever it can to keep TUF going and keep UFC on their station. Because in all honesty, if UFC left Spike, Spike would die. They have zero interesting content.

I cancelled Spike because they show all the UFC related stuff on Sportsnet here. I’m not upset about it at all.

KJ, I'm American and without the UFC spots on Spike

Agreed

UFC needs a regular cable presence to continue to become a bigger mainstream sport. The free shows aren’t on consistently enough for a casual viewer to know when they are on.

If anything TUF is a big commercial for UFC and it’s actually what initially got me into MMA.

by JiltedEmu on Apr 6, 2011 6:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree that the need weekly tv programming

But TUF has becomwe very stale. It’ts basically a combination of reality tv with mma fights, but I believe it is now the worst of both worlds. I don’t like reality tv, but for those who do there are certainly more interesting choices out there. The fights are rarely good, and are only two rounds without production or commentary.

I really think the UFC should look at creating a “Friday Night Fights” type show. Weekly fights focused on prospects and guys on the verge of being cut. Give deserving prospects a chance to make their name fighting gate keeper types who aren’t PPV draws anyway.

The majority of the guys they put on TUF now don’t belong anywhere near a UFC cage.

by Anton Chigurh on Apr 6, 2011 8:41 PM EDT up reply actions

No.

While I don’t really care so much about the show as a way for developing or exposing up-and-comers, I like watching it just because it’s fun to see what the coaches are like outside of the octagon. Think how much better TUF made Henderson vs. Bisping, or Evans vs. Jackson.

Mayhem Miller isn't that guy who had one welterweight fight in the UFC years ago

He’s that guy with a no#1 rated show on MTV. Unless the producers at spike have been living under a rock, they’d definitely want some of that.

What’s interesting is whether there’s anything in Mayhem’s contract with MTV that will allow him to appear in a prominent role in another reality based tv show for a competing cable network. If he’s still under contract to MTV, my guess would be ‘no’.

As far as his crime, I’m definitely not condoning it but the way people are reacting its like he raped a baby. It was a non violent crime that probably goes on all the time. It’s NOT, like some people have stupidly said, the type of thing that led to the housing crisis. And he got busted for steroids…like dozens of other fighters. They should still save Bisping for him.

TUF would provide an excellent build for them, but Chael can generate press on his own. Save TUF for guys who need it.

What does being licensed have to do with coaching?

Put sonnen on TUF against bisping.. And have the fight in england or somewhere else with their own athletic commission. Unless I’m missing something here and the NSAC is secretly running all athletic commissions? Also I think kizer is a douche who couldn’t even hold Marc ratners mustache comb

dana white follows ME on twitter...and i flew to ufc 124 with wanderlei silva.....who the hell are you?

by bubski27 on Apr 6, 2011 7:24 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

All TUF coaches have to have a seconds license

NSAC doesn’t run all other commisions, but most commissions will uphold the decisions of other SAC’s.

Conducting an experiment on knocking people out in particular ways would be unethical.

I dont like

the downplaying of Mayhem’s fight with GSP as a minor “welterweight bout six years ago.” He went the distance with the #2 p4p fighter in the world for goodness sake.

by mabel4life on Apr 6, 2011 7:29 PM EDT reply actions

Goddammit.

I don’t care about any of this. I just want to see Sonnen fight. Don’t care about lying to the CSAC, don’t care about the testosterone, and definitely don’t care about laundering money. Care about my own entertainment and if I don’t get to see him fight again, that would suck.

by Nellieball on Apr 6, 2011 7:53 PM EDT reply actions

AND missing out on him promoting a fight

I think he is hilarious, I view him almost as a pro wrestling character.

by Nellieball on Apr 6, 2011 7:57 PM EDT up reply actions

If it was just a character Sonnen was playing, I'd be fine with it

Unfortunately, instead of being a funny sideshow character acting out a role for entertainment, he’s just another dishonest scumbag. I can’t enjoy his antics at all when I know that’s just him being who he actually is. =/

I can't help but think....

what a MAJOR bullet the UFC dodged (“literally” -Goldberg). If Chael stays out of that triangle for 2 1/2 more minutes, this becomes way bigger than it already is.

Not only would the UFC champion be embroiled in numerous scandals, but the media would be flocking much more than they are now.

Mayhem vs Nick Diaz

with the fight at the end also being for a UFC contract!

by BJJDenver on Apr 6, 2011 10:39 PM EDT reply actions

As for Sonnen

I am all for guys getting second chances, even douche bags that I don’t like.

that said, I also would have no problem seeing him never fight again.

by BJJDenver on Apr 6, 2011 10:43 PM EDT reply actions

The commission should be there to make sure guys can fight safely; this is overreach.

Would have no trouble with Kizer forcing Sonnen to honor the original one year suspension while in Nevada, since he lied to get the reduction, but punishing him beyond that is silly. He lied. So fucking what? It’s not like California is pursuing a case against him. Sonnen’s not honorable enough to fight? It’s not the commission’s job to be the moral police. It’s to make sure fights are safe and on the up and up.

by AgitationStation on Apr 6, 2011 11:06 PM EDT reply actions

When the NSAC suspended Tyson indefinitely and refused to ever allow him to get a license in Nevada again following the Orlin Norris bout, he was suspended because of a very particular infraction (drug positive). They refused to relicense him based on systematic abuse and past behavior. I mention this because what is going on with the CSAC (or the case of the WEC 31 tap controversy) very much have to do with his licensing to fight there.

I think he’ll probably get licensed because you have to screw up tremendously in Nevada to be denied a license. Even Holyfield got one after being refused for years in light of the NYSAC suspension following the Larry Donald fight. If they don’t do it now, it’ll be part of a song and dance and 6 months later he’ll go back in front of the board and apologize a little more and get one then.

If he and/or his doctor can be shown to have lied,

meaning there are no legit medical and testing records to back their claim, they could, should and hopefully will be charged with perjury.

It's kind of hard for the commission to do their job (keeping fighters safe)

When there’s a guy walking around lying to other commissions.

He has a proven track record of lying and disregarding the rules of the sport. He has used banned substances in a fight. He has not actually shown that he thinks using those substances was wrong in any way.

So, how is that not a problem for fighter safety?

Steps to renew interest in TUF:

1. Pay Nick Diaz enough to be one of the coaches
2. Choose any welterweight not from Stockton to coach opposite him
3.???
4. Profit

Kizer

Sonnen did not lie about Kizer, Matt Lindland (manager) told Kizer as much. Why aren t you talking to him , if your manager tells you you are cleared , you believe you are! I can not find anywhere in the hearing as poted on the internet , that Sonnen even says Kizer.Because he said(somewhere) I talked to Kizer instead of (my manager) the message is the same. Kizer started out saying I have never spoke to Sonnen. Well Sonnen had what 3 fights in Vegas, get real, Kizer was at all the weigh ins . Then kizer says I guess I talked to Matt LIndland about Testosterone replacement, but not about Sonnen. LIndland says he has 3 letters from Sonnens Doctor that he scanned and sent to Nevada by request of kizer. Kizer says he didnt get them. So Sonnen is told all is cool, so who screwed up take your pick , but you all want to demonize Sonnen. This is enquirer type reporting and sensationalism tell the whole story or tell none at all.

by Fred Troy on May 3, 2011 10:59 AM EDT reply actions

fools in general

Dana white and the ufc all knew about Sonnens testosterone use, remember Doctor Davidson, if any of you listened to the hearing, he is the ufc doctor he was fully aware of Sonnens Testosterone use, and in on all the blood tests ect. Sonnen was not trying to hide it from them, they are his bosses and they knew all about it, and belived he was cleared. He could have gotten it cleared .Nevada has several guys cleared for it as we speak .These press people rely on freecom of speech to ruin people, I am sick of it.Sonnen pays Matt Lindland to Manage things, why are you not talking to him. Lindland claims Kizer is mistaken.I see Sonnen as the victim here. The least his Manager could have done was kept an accurate record of events,or done business by registered letter. now it has been 3 years and he can t produce a record.
