World MMA Heavyweight Scouting Report: #4 - Gerald Turek

Austria. The land of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sigmund Freud, and our #4-ranked heavyweight on the 2011 World MMA Scouting Report Gerald Turek (10-1). While his name probably shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as such noteworthy figures in Austria's history, Turek is a significant figure in the world of mixed martial arts. Most notably, he's one of the few prospects in the heavyweight division who possesses incredible knockout power, solid striking ability, and above average grappling skills. At 10-1, the 6'2", 235 pounder is banking on a win over Jair Goncalves on April 17th to continue pushing his name as one of the elite in Europe, hopefully to the greener pastures of the UFC.

Offensive Skills: Turek is one of the few heavyweights on our countdown who is equally dangerous on ground as he is on the feet. His heavy hands house heart-stopping power, both on the feet and on the ground. While his technical striking isn't on par with some of the lower ranked fighters on our list, his grappling abilities are far superior. In many of the fights in which he's forced opponents to shoot for takedowns in hopes of avoiding his stand-up game, Turek has impressed, transitioning to armbars or sprawling his way to back control where he's dominated the opposition.

Defensive Skills: Turek isn't a risky striker. He isn't a brawler who wildly tossed haymakers at his opponents in hopes of showing off his power and ending fights instantly. He understands that his chin could be exposed in those moments, and he resorts to a distance striking game to lessen the odds of a catastrophe. From a technical standpoint, there isn't any reason to suggest he's an impenetrable wall on the feet however. He doesn't possess quick feet or a style indicative of evading shots from opponents while he dances around battering their chin. He's more of a plodding striker, pressing forward steadily while looking for openings.

On the ground, his grappling skills act as a deterrent to unsuspecting heavyweights who pitch tents in his guard. He has a solid guard, and the flexibility to pull off slick transitions that have surprised many of his opponents.

Progression: Due to Turek's propensity to finish fights quickly, it's tough to nail down exactly where he's improved the most. His striking has looked better in more recent fights, but I think his grappling game has reaped the benefits of his training. Austria isn't exactly a haven of Jiu-Jitsu mastery, but Turek has shown better control on the ground over time. He no longer needs to rely solely on his hands to blast opponents from top control.

Environment: Turek trains out of Iron Fist Gym in Vienna, Austria under the moniker Team Stockmann, a camp that houses the who's who of fighters who could be cast in the next Expendables flick. Every one of them looks like a nightmarish figure in that dream where you've walked down a dark alley. The team is headed by Andreas Stockmann, a man well-known as a Karate and Jiu-Jitsu champion in the region along with heading the Free Fight trade association in Germany.

Potential: Turek's placement on our countdown is solely based on the skills he brings to the table. Unlike some of the talents that have ranked below him on our list, Turek possesses equally dangerous skills in the stand-up and ground departments. He has proven submission ability, excellent control on the ground, and devastating knockout power. While there is some concern that the region in which he trains may limit his progress, we'll find out more in the coming months as he battles some of the better heavyweights in the region. If he wins, there isn't any reason why the UFC won't want to feature Turek on upcoming cards in Europe or the UK.
