Sweet I love this matchup. Excited to see Tyson at his proper weight

yeah, if he does well with the cut, he’ll be pretty big for that division.

I don't think any of these fights really belong on the main card

and if they are and there’s no amazing headliner, then it sounds like they’ve given up on Versus.

Well this is dumb

Guys like Griffin were the exact reason Gamburyan dropped down. This is a solid 155er against a bad 155er. I’d rather see Griffin test another top 10 FW who’s never fought at LW.

by crazybones on Apr 5, 2011 4:09 PM EDT reply actions

Not really.

Puts Tyson right in the upper tier if he wins and injects some life in the title picture. Gamburyan is incredibly overrated at this point anyways.

Agreed

I’m actually shocked they gave Tyson some so high for his FW debut.

Gamburyan is incredibly overrated at this point anyways.

That’s kind of the point. I want to see if a guy like Mendes (who’s never fought above FW, as far as I know) can handle a solid LW. We already know Gamburyan can’t – that’s why he dropped down.

I mean, I guess they have to get Griffin a win… it’s just not very exciting to me because Gamburyan’s shown he can’t hang with a decent LW.

by crazybones on Apr 5, 2011 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I can see your point.

It’s essentially a way for Griffin to show he can cut the weight well and see how he looks at FW going forward. Also a way for him to get a win under his belt for the first time in forever.

If Tyson was a solid 155er, he’d still fight at 155. But he’s not, so he’s not.

by Shnak on Apr 6, 2011 8:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Tyson literally isn't solid at 155

He’s puffed up at lightweight. Featherweight is definitely the right division for him.

I think crazybones meant solid 155er as in a good 155er, not necessarily his shape. But you’re right, Tyson Griffin isn’t a solid 155er either way.

by Shnak on Apr 6, 2011 8:17 AM EDT up reply actions

Exactly.

Tyson’s a good fighter, but these days, you can’t afford to be in the wrong weight class. I think ’45 will be a much better fit.

Have you watched that fight?

I did, and I scored it 30-27 for Tyson Griffin. It wasn’t even particularly competitive.

In the clearing stands a boxer And a fighter by his trade And he carries the reminders Of ev'ry glove that layed him down Or cut him till he cried out In his anger and his shame "I am leaving, I am leaving" But the fighter still remains

Obviously, if I'm talking about it.

Scored it 29-28 for Lentz. Regardless, a competitive fight that goes one way or another isn’t ‘bullshit’. Griffin didn’t get robbed. He lost a close fight. Tough.

Please tell me what Lentz did to win that fight, besides pushing Griffin into the fence trying to take him down.

3-fight losing streak or not, I think Griffin will rightly be a significant favorite in this. I don’t even see it being particularly competitive unless less Tyson has gone off the deep end after his losses.

I like all of these fights

even if all of them besides barry lost their last fights. Griffin/Manny will be great, Barry/Kongo is gonna be an awesome kickboxing match, and the stevenson fight will at least be entertaining. Its free. Im not complaining

They told me to put a signature here.......so I did.

by ANDERSONS GOT THE JUICE on Apr 5, 2011 5:59 PM EDT reply actions

I dont think so...

Kongo will not be in position to gamble with his contract, trading with such a great kickboxer as Pat. He will try to take him down and G&P him to TKO. I hate Kongo, but that’s the way i see fight finished…

by Darko Serbia on Apr 5, 2011 6:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Ditto.

Barry is the best Kick Boxer in that Division bar NONE. No one wants to take a leg kick from Barry. If he was only slightly more aggressive with his strikes especially his punches he would be way more effective. Especially if he worked his high kick more in fights. Three or so leg kicks while looking down, then on the four look down and throw high. Might no work all the time but he could catch some people especially someone like Kongo who doesn’t have that good of striking defense.

PAT by UD.

Jules: Normally, both your asses would be dead as fucking fried chicken, but you happen to pull this shit while I'm in a transitional period so I don't wanna kill you, I wanna help you. But I can't give you this case, it don't belong to me. Besides, I've already been through too much shit this morning over this case to hand it over to your dumb ass.

Barry is the best Kick Boxer in that Division bar NONE aside from Overeem.

Kongo would get lit up on the feet, I agree with Darko that he will take him down and GnP Barry to a UD. Hell, he wouldn’t stand with Buentello (smart game plan actually, but still…)

We could've seen this fight at 155.

Is this what FW is gonna be? The graveyard of lost 155ers? If people are gonna move down I’d love to see them at least fight people they weren’t moving down to avoid. This might be a good match if it were Bellator or Strikeforce, but I expect more from the UFC.

by Confucius on Apr 5, 2011 7:46 PM EDT reply actions

Well, yeah. I hate to break it to you, but FW has long been the graveyard of lost 155lbers. Whether it was Faber beating up Jeff Curran or getting beat up by Mike Brown, the guys near the top of the ladder since the WEC was introduced were often people who fought at lightweight and had no major league options there, but had one at 145 once Zuffa decided to throw some money behind it. Now that real money is behind the division, the rest of the pack of guys who can make the cut will try to and bump all of them out.

Remember when everyone got all defensive about Gamburyan and Mike Brown being so highly ranked and what not, and other people said the division was still in flux and they weren’t really all that good? Yeah.

I think it was mostly the WEC instead of UFC (and applicable pay grades + sponsorships) that kept more guys from rightsizing their weight class to 145.

Versus 4: Decision 2011

I see at least three decisions so far. I doubt that Barry/ Kongo will have a finish as that will more than likely be a clinch fest. Joe Daddy certainly isn’t going to finish Showtime, and Griffin has one finish in his last 11 fights.

by drawp on Apr 5, 2011 8:23 PM EDT reply actions

Seeing as how this will probably be the first UFC show I'll attend...

I’m ok with the lineup, Barry, Tyson, and Joe Daddy are big favorites of mine, but I hope it gets a litte top-heavy soon.

I know it's been said before in this post but...

this is a fight that could just as easily take place at lightweight and the guys wouldn’t even have to cut weight. Both these guys started out as lightweights, the only difference now? Cutting weight. The featherweight division is soon going to become the former lightweight division as the new breed of fighters take over the current division.

by dreamers_12345 on Apr 6, 2011 12:15 AM EDT reply actions

Tyson has been on a really bad losing streak lately, but I feel that he can beat Gamburyan at 145. Tyson was at one time just a fight or two away from a Title shot at 155, so I wonder if he can be a top ten at Featherweight and maybe even challenge for the title.
