Tompkins: Jose Aldo Doesn't Have The Hand Speed of Mark Hominick
Mark Hominick will challenge UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo at UFC 129 in front of a home town crowd in Toronto. His striking coach Shawn Tompkins talks to MMA Canada about the approach he's advising his fighter to take and where he thinks Hominick's advantages over the fearsome Aldo are:
"I think that where he wins this fight is he moves forward. Nobody who has fought Aldo has moved forward. And everybody Aldo has fought has been a wrestler trying to be a kickboxer. Nobody has the hand speed Hominick does, not even Aldo."Apr 30th, live on Pay-per-view from Toronto, Ontario, Canada:
"We respect him, he is such a great fighter… but we are not going into the fight afraid of him."
Mark "The Machine" Hominick (20-8) [Num. 8] +350
Win George Roop - TKO (Punches) UFC FFTT 2
Win Leonard Garcia - Decision (Split) WEC 51
Win Yves Jabouin - TKO (Punches) WEC 49

Aldo has more than the everything speed of Hominick.

Aldo's
combo speed is frightening. He throws combo’s of hands and feet in the time it takes guys to throw with their hands. Hominick is good, but I see Aldo ruining him.

After seeing Aldo sparring w/ the likes of Andy Souwer, i’m completely sold that Mark Hominick does not stand a viable chance on the feet w/ that man.

Tompkins makes a good point
Most of Aldo’s recent opponents have primarily been grapplers that opted to stand with Aldo, proving to be a bad bad choice. Brown, Faber, Gamburyan all have decent striking and have power, but none are GREAT strikers. It will be interesting to see how Aldo deals with someone who really does fancy himself a striker.
Ehhh . . . Faber is definitely not your striker’s striker but I would give him a little bit more props because of his speed. Just like Rashad Evans is not a GREAT striker but he can handle his business against good strikers.

SentientAndroid, I can’t wait to see Barboza’s next fight!
Alves kind of dissappoints me some times. He’s still a tough cookie that entertains but . . . he . . . he needs to improve his speed. He’s carrying way to much bulk. I hope the Mike Dolce diet is working for him.

Neither can I!
and yeah Alves does tend to perform kinda spotty at times, but that’s mainly against guys who can put him on his back (Fitch and GSP). Out of his last 13 fights he’s 10-3, and those three losses are from the number 1 and (at least) top 3 ww’s in the world.
I’m liking Edson a lot. His last fight was good, but kinda reminded me of Makdessi/Audinwood. Makdessi threw some very creative/flashy moves that landed, but didn’t seem to do much damage. I guess Barboza’s win over Anthony would’ve looked better had he stopped Anthony, but then I guess I’m just being greedy.

Not on the feet, Rashad can't.
He just wrestle fucks them. Faber is fast and a good striker for a grappler. He’s not a world class Kick boxer. Mark hasn’t had a perfect fighting career, but I think it’s safe to say, he’s an exceptional striker. Top ten striker in MMA, period. I’m not saying he’ll win, Aldo’s a better all around fighter, and has more power in his strikes, but when it comes to technique, Mark puts on clinics. This will be interesting.
HOminick and Aldo will be very intriguing.
Back to Evans. (Weak argument forthcoming) Maybe stating that he can handle his business is overstating his skills but he’s some what serviceable. I also state that Evans is way more well-rounded than his previous opponents and does a little bit more than wrestle-f*ck his opponents. I actually believe that we have not seen the best from guys like Evans, Jones, Jardine or even GSP.

they didn’t choose to stand with Aldo, they simply couldn’t get him down..

Fine, he might have better hand speed
But Aldo has way better leg speed
They told me to put a signature here.......so I did.

Got Jiu-Jitsu?
Maybe Aldo should take Hominick down and submit him. At least Tompkins will feel vindicated about hyping his fighter.

I actually think
Aldo will definitely try for some takedowns. His top game is gnarly, especially his striking. It’s always good to present as many threats to your opponent as possible.

A split decision win to Leonard Garcia...
and now he thinks that he can handle a guy that dominated Urijah Faber and Brown…ok. I can’t deny how fucking awesome he looked when he destroyed Roop, but that’s George Roop, the same George Roop that had a split draw with…Leonard Garcia. Anyways I’m intrigued no matter what, so let’s get it Aldo!
Anderson Silva, Edson Barboza, Jose Aldo, Charles Oliveira, Thiago Alves = Muay Thai wrecking machines!
Have you watched that Garcia fight?
There was no way it should have been a split decision. Leonard Garcia has some power over judges to make them completely forget what they’re watching.

That, plus mark had a broken hand.

Hominick is awesome, Aldo is awesomer
Let me put it this way, Mark. Have you ever landed two flying knees directly on a person’s head while in middair in a split second? Nope? Okay then.

Aldo!
I think Aldo is gonna whoop up on hominick for a round and a half. Then take him down and sub him with a rnc. Sorta like he did MTB.

I'm not superstitious at all, but I feel like everythime Tompkins comes out and says something his side always ends up losing.
Am I wrong on this?

Please, Hominick doesn’t have the leg kicks or the Jiu Jitsu that Aldo has. He cant strike from a distance, he will have to be in the pocket the entire fight to land his punches, this already puts him at a disadvantage. Even though, i think Hominick will win.
I wish death upon no one, but not all deserve to live.
Love me some Aldo but the Canadian in me will be cheering hard for Hominick in the Skydome that night

I'm really looking forward to this fight
Hominick does have some pretty good hands but Jose Aldo is just a beast. Kind of reminds me of Silva vs Belfort in a way. The 145 lb. division is getting stacked pretty quickly. Guys like Florian, Stevenson, and Griffin all dropping down to 145 will add some more interesting match ups to the weight class. It will also help to increase the popularity of many of the fighters in that weight class as well. It’s a great time to be a mixed martial arts fan

Really??
They’re picking hand speed as the area to beat Aldo? If the line was “sure Aldos is fast, but Mark is so technical and his counters are so good etc etc” I’d be more inclined to believe it. This makes me like Hominick’s chances less.
I consider myself a softcore fan.
It's no secret
that Hominick’s hands are his forte. Aldo has good hands himself, but he tends to throw wide, circular puncher (which compliments his wicked round kicks quite well); whereas Hominick throws tighter, more basic punches like jabs, crosses, and lead hooks.
I think Aldo is faster, but I also think that Hominick puts up more volume. Very interesting striking battle, I think Hominick has a tendency to counter kicks instead of checking them. You can’t really do that against Aldo, every low kick he lands adds up, and the damage just compounds.
