UFC 129 Fight Card: GSP Not Afraid of Jake Shields' Ground Game

UFC welterweight Georges St. Pierre is set to headline UFC 129 in front of the biggest crowd (55,000) in UFC history in Toronto, Canada on April 30th. He'll be facing Jake Shields, the former EliteXC and Strikeforce champ who's returned to his natural 170lb fighting weight in the UFC. GSP spoke to the UFC's cameras about the fight:
"Jake Shields hasn't lost in six years. He has won 15 fights in a row. But he hasn't fought me. The UFC world title is a different game."

"He's the guy that I've wanted to fight for a long time. I think he's the greatest fighter at welterweight now, he's the guy to beat. The best guys are going to clash together that night and it's going to be a good fight."

"Jake Shields is the best jiu-jitsu guy in the UFC right now. I know what he wants to do to me. He's going to want to set up his takedown with striking, put me down, mount me and try to submit me from there."

"He doesn't know what I'm going to do to him. I can try to knock him out standing up or knock him out on the floor or try to submit him. I'm not afraid to go on the floor with him and that is something different that he never faced before. Everyone that he ever fought, they were afraid to go on the floor with him but not me."

"I'm a clever fighter. I will dictate the pace of the fight, I will fight my fight and this fight will finish with still UFC Welterweight Champion Georges "Rush" St. Pierre."

Jab?

Jake has neither Koschek’s chin nor power. GSP has nothing to fear on the feet, Jake is gonna get blasted.

And not just one, either. Shields ate a good half dozen right hand bombs in that first round, and the fact that he managed to recover is pretty astounding, really.

While

it is impressive that Shields survived that round, it also shows that he’s very much susceptible to being hit early, hard, and often. And unlike Hendo, GSP should be able to not only stuff the takedowns, but also the sweeps that Shields likes to switch to following his shots.

From the top, GSP can play a game similar to Melendez/ Aoki.

Since when does Josh Koscheck have a great chin?

And since when does GSP have great KO power? I’d bet against a KO in this fight all day long and twice on Sundays.

What kind of odds can I get betting on a UD?

I don’t think that he will in that GSP has shown in the past that he does not fight towards his opponent’s strength. He stood with Koscheck and Fitch, but took down Hardy and Alves. However, if the fight hits the floor, while Shields is much better at BJJ, GSP is no slouch either. If Kampmann was able to survive and get out of bad positions on the floor against Shields, I don’t see why GSP couldn’t do the same.

Mayhem needed another 5 to 10 seconds. That rnc still makes me sad :(

by wilberdp on Apr 4, 2011 9:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Honestly

go back and watch that fight again. Everyone says this, but that RNC was NOT under the chin and Jake was doing the right things to keep it that way. Not saying Miller couldn’t have got it given time, but how close Jake was to losing is being greatly exxagerated by his detractors.

I mean exaggerated!

by MRR1 on Apr 4, 2011 9:36 AM EDT up reply actions

He had his back with a figure 4 around his midsection and looked like he was initially doing some sort of neck crank. At the end it looks like he got under his chin but at that point Jake knew the round was seconds from ending and may have relaxed his defense. If he had another minute or even 30 seconds he probably could have finished it, but there are many, many other fights we could say that about as well.

shields kappman ended with

Jake having a body triangle and working a choke. Kappman was maybe saved by the bell/time limit. Few can survive jake locking in a bodytriangle.

had more of a "Dan sevren choke" opposed to a classic rnc.

Its not quite as tight, jake was tugging at the arms so that took some of the squeeze away ,he had his jaw under which is a crap defence but it buys you time……. if there was 60(maybe less) more seconds jake was going to sleep.

GSP's got all around game

No real weakness in standing, wrestling, and ground game… That’s a tall order.

Has there been any word regarding Shields’ weight thus far? If he has another hard time making cut and we see the same Jake we saw at ufc 121 against Kampmann, we might actually see GSP finally finish somebody off.

That’s when he can just lay on his opponent, he can’t (too risky IMO) and won’t do that with shield (standing makes more sense), he will do like he did with KOS, except shield got no KO power, so there won’t be any reason to hold back. OR shields takes him down and submit him before GSP stands up, cause he will.

So jake can change levels , hit him with a blast double, mount him, and lock in a mounted gil-O-teen =).

Gotta say its pretty smart to go work with Roger Gracie, but Marcelo might have been a better choice. Gsp and marcelo have a much more similar body type. Some of Rogers tricks wont be as effective for Gsp as they are for Roger. I would kill to train with Roger or Rickson. Does anyone know how much a Roger private lesson is?

I don’t think Shields is a danger to GSP off his back, or even particularly on top, in the unlikely event he ends up there. Where I do think he is a serious threat to GSP is during any scrambles that occur, particularly towards the end of a takedown by GSP.

Well...not in that training video of the two of them that was released.

There was once where Ben was attempting a single and Jake hopped guard and put Askren in a guillotine while Ben was still standing and maintained it onto his back before eventually rolling and making him tap though.

Its the AJJ/BJJ first instincts Jake has to go along with his high level wrestling that make him so dangerous imo. He uses different hand placements than most wrestlers seem to and he manages to tweak his position a little such that it seems to give the wrestlers the impression he is going where they want him to, not realizing he wants that too by that point.

I certainly wouldn’t be shocked if he takes or drags GSP down at some point, as I think he will be willing to take some risks on the feet early on to try to get his hands on GSP. If he does manage to get him down, or if GSP takes him down, I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if he submits him mid-scramble.

I honestly think this will be among the most boring GSP fights ever if he has his way – nothing but jabbing and back pedaling with the occasional safe takedown at the very end of rounds.

Shields only chance of winning is getting GSP down.

To bad for him GSP probably has the best TDD in the Division he blocks something like 76% of all takedowns and lands 75% off his own. Shields also has a pretty slow shot, he normally gets people down in the clinch like he did Kamp. However GSP wont just stand their while Shields holds him on the cage he will be much faster the Shields and will go to town on him in the stand up. I no people some folks dont like the comparison, but this fight will look like GSP vs Fitch. Where GSP blocks every single TDA and Just unloads on him striking wise because Fitch cant hit for shit.

GSP great fighter

GSP is just such a talented fighter and he’s such a nice guy that sometimes we lose fact that he’s truly a champion and while Jake Shields is no slouch I don’t think he’ll come close to winning. The knock on GSP that he doesn’t finish fights doesn’t hold water with me, you win any way you can, a win is a win. When I boxed I ALWAYS wanted a KO, within the first 30 sec if possible..why not? You’re in and out before you know it and the crowd loves it, but it doesn’t always happen that way. Some guys are very good defensively and some have an iron chin so you have to be smart about it and get the win any way you can.

I think

this is the fight where gsp gets a knockout. Just a gut feeling.

Damien Maia

has the best BJJ in the UFC. Shields is not even in the top 3…

by Miha Perhavec on Apr 4, 2011 11:09 AM EDT reply actions

I think Shields is easily in the top-3 in BJJ for MMA in the UFC, although perhaps not pure BJJ. Much like GSP is one of the 2 best MMA Wrestlers, but probably not even top-5 in pure wrestling.

Exactly.

he is 3 to 5 or so ??? this is my mma bjj list for the ufc.

And probably #2 W.W. by bjj credentials. I still give the nod to Bj as one of the top dogs. Some disagree…… they are of course wrong and should be ashamed of themselves.

1.Maia
2.Bj
3.Shields
4. Paul harris ( he would be higher but leg locks are an all or nothing game you always give up position when you miss. not good for mma cause you can get mounted and/or pounded.)
5. Dos Anjos- he is slick but still coming into his own.
6. Big Nog- he’s a legend and one of my all time favorites. But without his terminator like chin his bjj is less than useful. He has always blocked an incredible amount of shots with his face before getting the sub.
7. Little nog- good but he was never his bigger brother, never will be.
8.big country- the black belt I would want to fight least.
9. J.O.E – he is only this low because of inactivity.
10. I guess I am gonna have to go with Mir.

If they are on my list I think they are great and I am envious of some or all of there skills. Being # 10 still means you are a God damn killer.

How would you rank them

on effectiveness in MMA rather than credentials?

He ranked them by BJJ credentials, not by what they have actually done or shown in MMA. And JOE is Einemo (his initials).

no it was both.

But it was less about accomplishments and more about where I think there games are at.
The nogs would have been damn near at the top at one point, now not so much.
Its completely subjective and unscientific. Just my style.

He could be on the list, but who would you take off?

I'd take off Einemo

He hasn’t fought in years. Who knows where his MMA BJJ is at?

Also, you think dos Anjos is better than G-Sot? I think the latter has shown greater success against better competition.

by Pantherhare on Apr 4, 2011 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions

i will give you that one.

Dos anjos is really smooth but I could see gsot taking his place.

hmmmmmm......?

See its hard because Bj and shields are so different.
Bj is a great wrestler/judo player.Bj is sick off his back with sweeps ,his octopus guard and subs too. With Bj all paths lead to the back. Bj wants blood or you to go sleep. And has nasty gnp when his opponents are grounded.
Shields has an awesome single, strong passing and a killer mount position(but hits like a chick). Jakes style is appealing to the judges. Plus he aways remembers “position before submission” so he’s always endangering with the potential sub and doesn’t get reversed. Plus he is big and strong.
I give the edge to because mostly because of bj’s boxing/ground and pound. You don’t know what to expect with Bj and he has fight ending capabilities from all position .
Shields only has one pitch ,his subs. Its a 101mph fast ball the question is can you hit it? But judges also love his style…. so their is that.
This one is a coin flip really.
I admire both of their skill sets for different reasons.
Side note: If Jake would knock off that silly vegan shit and devlop a taste for blood he may gain the clear edge. Its hard to be a predator who doesn’t like to kill. Lol

Wouldn't it be great

if GSP was to sub Shields?!

by SentientAndroid on Apr 4, 2011 12:51 PM EDT reply actions

Everyone thinking GSP is going to jab his way to a decision or keep this fight standing for 5 rounds are in for a shock.

Shields will be thinking that GSP’s game plan will revolve around stuffing his take downs and keeping it on the feet.

GSP is going to shoot for take downs on Jake and GNP him on the ground. He doesnt really have much to fear from Jake on his back and GSP has some of the very best top control in the game.

GSP shooting for take downs on Shields is going to completely catch him off guard and cause him to completley rethink his game plan.

Also

I don’t think that GSP would have any problem with taking the fight to the ground. He did it too both Hughes and Penn, two men who know a thing or two about subbing other men, especially BJ. So I don’t think that he fears it at all, but I’m pretty sure that he respects it. Hell I can see GSP flirting around with a little standup for the first minute or two, initiate a take-down, get it, and sub Shields all under round one, you never know.

When is the last time BJ submitted someone, other than via RNC to an already damaged opponent?

not a fair statement.

Bj enjoys punching people in the face.

That is true, and I am not trying to down play how awesome his BJJ was back in the day, but I have my doubts about how tight he has kept it in recent years.

he almost choked fitch twice.

I don’t think there is any reason to think that he has let his skills back slide.

IIRC, didn’t Fitch have an arm trapped, keeping him from any real danger?

if bj is on your back the danger is very real.

And yes jon did everything right to get out of it. I wish bj would have worked the body triangle more.bj loves to kick his leg over an arm to trap it so he can choke. I think he was setting up for that when jon got free. Hence the letting go of the body triangle.

He’s definitely not going to sub Shields, not in a million years, thats just wishful thinking. But what he can do is take him down, control him and GNP him.
