M-1 Challenge XXV Fight Video: Vinny Magalhaes Wins M-1 Title by Mounted Gogoplata
In case you (intentionally?) missed the live stream of M-1 Challenge XXV here on BloodyElbow, there was a light heavyweight championship bout that you probably should check out. TUF alumnus, Vinny Magalhaes took on Viktor Nemkov for the vacant M-1 light heavyweight title, and he finished with a rare submission that has got the MMA world buzzing.
For those who didn't pay attention when it was streamed live, you're in luck cause you can still watch the 26-year-old BJJ expert pull-off a gogoplata from z-mount:
If you're too lazy to sit through the entire half hour video, you can skip to the 24:00 minute mark to watch the finish. The victory makes four straight wins, and crowned him as the first M-1 Global light heavyweight champion.
After the jump, Vinny gives a breakdown of the spectacular submission he used.

Invested Interest
I always had an invested interest in Vinny because I liked him on TUF, always wanted to see him improve and get another fun in the UFC especially when I see him putting off stuff like this.
Ah, I think the term you’re looking for there is ‘vested interest’ not ‘invested interest’.
As for the actual finish, it was a bit anti-climatic thanks to the crowd, but overall it was a pretty solid submission.

Very happy I was able to catch this live yesterday, spectacular finish. I’ve sort of liked Magalhaes since TUF, he’s a very solid fighter with superb ground skills, ususally entertaining to watch. Hope to see more of him in the future.
sadly
he has no standup and below average wrestling.

There is something amazing to watch with skilled heavier weight-class ground fighters… The sheer strength they can bring to submissions give them a whole new light. I also always sorta liked Vinny on that season we will be seeing more of him for sure.

Vinny has really beautiful jiu jitsu.
Got the Summer hatin on me cus I'm hotter than the sun. Got the Spring hatin on me cus I ain't never sprung. Winter hatin on me cus I'm colder than ya'll; and I will never I will never I will never Fall.

Technically in competition jiu jitsu and jiu jitsu only accolades he way way way way way way way way way way surpasses Nog. In BJJ for MMA… well we’ll see how he is down the road.

he didnt say his was better.
He said it was different. He said Big Nog has a “basic game” . Roger Gracie has a basic game. There is nothing wrong with being basic. Vinny is strong basics with new school flare.
And he said Nog never competed at black belt level really. Which is true. Nog went against Ricco Rodrigez and got knee bared in a super fight or adcc qualifier can’t remember which. That is only black belt vs. Black belt match I have seen of his.

Nobody’s mentioned the commentators? They’re awful! They’ve so little energy and enthusiasm they made the actual sub a complete anti-climax!
exactly what i thought
every regional promotion or small show should be forced to hire bas rutten and don frye
they may not be the best commentators, but hell they’re entertaining

Yeah, I think they failed to convey how epic it really was. I was as excited as I’ve ever been with a fight finish.
Also the TV production dropped the ball on the replay, they basically just showed him having it sunk in and the tap. They should have shown the whole set-up in slo-mo, more than once, preferably from different angles if available.

All I could here was Blind Melon
In the talk-through video – it really got on my fucking nerves. Damn dead hippies.
I don't know much about Jiu Jitsu
but one thing I wonder is why I haven’t seen this before in mma. I would think that a grappler with much more skill than his opponent would be able to get this submission more often. Could someone breakdown the why or why not to my question. Thanks
Support increased fighter pay. Support fighters unionizing.
Speaking as a BJJ layman
It’s difficult to pull off. Anything with “-plata” in it is difficult to finish since it’s easy to defend. Even once he was in the basic setup position, it rooms him a few more adjustments to properly cut off the blood flow and force the tap.
And I would assume when one fighter is much more skilled on the ground they’d prefer to end it quickly with an easy rear naked choke or armbar than risk a more complicated move where they may be moved into a more disadvantaged position. If the fighter on bottom escaped that, he could have returned to standing, somewhere Vinny may not have wanted to be (just a general situation, I don’t know much about the fighters).

it's a very difficult submission with an incredibly low finishing rate, especially in MMA. I believe it has been finished...twice?
And Gogo’s in general are a low percentage submission. Particularly, in the high levels of MMA, most people have at least a basic understanding of jiu jitsu, and as such, will be weary to be caught in an omo or gogo.
Though someone you may not have known has a GREAT gogo…BRAD IMES OF TUF STARDOM

this move needs three things
1.Great control from mount. Few people in mma have this.
2. Very good hip flexibility. Few people in mma have this.
3. The balls to lose position if the move fails/ trust in your bjj to get a domiant position back. Few people in mma have this.
Mix all three of those things together and this is what you get. 5 or so go-go-plata finishes in high level mma.

When I first saw the omoplata, I thought he broke something on Nemkov...
Glad he got the finish…those judges were big fans of boring top position (who isn’t, really?) and the refs weren’t about to stand them up with the home country fighter on top.
Way to go Vinny!

Wait, was it a omo or a gogo
kinda hard to see in this crappy stream.
