Bloody Elbow Radio, presented by Bad Boy, was live Thursday afternoon to preview UFC 129. Hosts Matt Bishop, Forrest Lynn and Mike Fagan broke down the seven televised bouts, including the main event UFC welterweight championship bout between Georges St. Pierre and Jake Shields, the UFC featherweight title fight between Jose Aldo and Mark Hominick and the light-heavyweight clash between Randy Couture and Lyoto Machida.
You don't want to miss the insight and analysis for this one, along with Bishop's pick for the Couture/Machida fight, one he called a "Five Trillion Star Bank On It Special."
We also were joined by UFC lightweight Danny Downes as he prepares for a fight in his adopted hometown of Milwaukee next week. Downes, who was allowed by the UFC to fight outside the organization, talked about that, his fight with Tiequan Zhang, what things are like at the Duke Roufus camp and more.
"I'm still under contract with Zuffa, but the lightweight division right now is kind of stacked and it's really heavy. There's going to be a long layoff between my next fight and my previous one, and this one kind of fell in my lap. Out here in Milwaukee, it kind of happened on short notice. I asked the UFC if I could get a fight outside to get some work, kind of like a tune-up, get the rust off."
"It's nice to be able to get this opportunity. You can train and spar all you want, but there's no substitute for that actual experience. You can't teach that. It'll be nice to keep it going instead of having a really long layoff."
Our very own Forrest Lynn also broke down Shields' chances against St. Pierre:
"Shields just doesn't have the tools to beat St. Pierre. Period. One of the key things when you're a successful MMA fighter is the ability to maintain or hold range. There's no way Jake Shields is going to be able to do that. He can't kind of probe and stick a jab out there and keep GSP away from him. He's not going to hurt him with leg kicks to stop St. Pierre from coming in and shooting. There's nothing he can really do to keep St. Pierre from doing what he wants to do and that's probably stand in the pocket and unload with crazy strikes on him. I just think Jake Shields is going to get beat up and he's going to get put out and in a really nasty way."
