UFC President Dana White Tells Tito Ortiz to Put Jenna Jameson 'On a Leash'

You'd think Dana White would learn. He was forced to apologize (Update: While White offered a non-apology apology for his word choice, he never apologized to Hunt. Details below.) after calling Loretta Hunt (then of Sherdog) a "fucking dumb bitch" and her anonymous source a "faggot" and a "pussy" in April of 2009 (video here). (As a side note, try to find video of the apology. The UFC took down the official video (it was the lead in to a fight week video blog), and I've had no luck finding a transcript. If I remember correctly, the apology was more PR move than legitimate remorse.)

It looked like Dana White had himself under control. Sure, he'll always have that aggressive and abrasive Alpha Male personality, but it seemed as if someone got in his ear and told him to, you know, think before you say something.

And now this:

@jennajameson hey jenna SHUT THE FUCK UP and mind ur biz! @titoortiz put her on a fuckin leash!!!less than a minute ago via Twitter for BlackBerry® Favorite Retweet Reply

It won't be so easy to scrub this from the history books.

There's nothing concrete about what caused this blowup, but I would wager that it has something to do with Jenna Jameson making light of Chuck Liddell's penchant for losing consciousness in recent years. (Update: It may also have to do with this tweet from Jenna following a back-and-forth between White and Tito Ortiz.)

I'll go ahead and be the voice of reason here. Yes, Dana White shouldn't say these sorts of things in a public venue. Yes, images of female subjugation aren't appropriate coming out of the mouth (or Blackberry keyboard) of the head of a professional sports organization. Yes, Dana White should apologize.

At the same time, Dana White isn't the Worst Person in the World as I'm sure some people will paint him to be. He can be an asshole about things, and he certainly has issues with women and language and public relations, but if this was a friend of a friend, you'd think less of the guy and move on with your life.

I don't want to sound like I'm brushing this under the rug, because this is worthy of getting kicked out of all but the most depraved of friendly house parties. Society has deemed this sort of behavior inappropriate of a man of White's stature and in the forum in which he let his voice be heard. This sort of thing has consequences.

But I'm sure we'll hear calls for White's job, comparisons to Roger Goodell and David Stern, and all sorts of bad analogies and hyperbole. Trying to rehabilitate Dana White's views on the fairer sex isn't worth my time.

[Update] Loretta Hunt informed me that White never apologized to her for his attack, only for his comments about the anonymous source. She provided a link to a Comcast story detailing White's "apology":

"I chose some words that offended and hurt some people," White said. "Anybody who knows me knows I would never, ever maliciously attack somebody who wasn't attacking me. As far as the gay and lesbian community, my comments were not directed toward them. I'm actually a supporter of many of their issues. The last thing I would ever want anybody to think about me or think is cool is to go out and attack somebody because of their sexual orientation. That was not my intention. That was not the way I said it and I apologize to anybody that I've offended or hurt."

White, though, never directly apologized to Hunt. He also told ESPN.com in a separate interview that he "absolutely, positively meant to attack (Hunt). Absolutely."

Although it’s not that huge a deal. I think the UFC’s relative obscurity will actually help in this situation, as there probably won’t be a huge public backlash.

I humbly and sincerely apologize for asking that an independent contractor of mine put his wife on a leash. I should have been more tactful and respectful when requesting such a procedure to be done. Next time I would requests that said contractor should ask his wife go back to work and finish the line of 150 independent contractors that are waiting for her; next to the vivid video offices in the San Fernando Valley. It is expected that once she returns to work she would find it rewarding and fullfilling..

Sincerely and apologetically yours

how does White’s “unprofessional” behavior “damage the UFC brand”???

Well, the issue isn’t so much the leash stuff as much as it’s Dana perpetuating the idea that Tito Ortiz should keep “his woman” in line. Not to mention that Dana should be above such things as responding to Jenna Jameson’s stupid tweet in public.

by Mike Fagan on Apr 28, 2011 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Dana should be above responding to Jenna’s stupid tweets because her tweets really are ridiculous (I’m recalling her Twitter battles with Koscheck and Frank Mir’s wife in the past). But if he’s going to respond then it’s silly to call out Tito with the leash thing. I think it was much more of a dig at Tito and not Jenna, and Dana should just keep it between him and Jenna.

Fagan, I generally agree with everything you write, but you’re making a non-story into an issue here.

You’re making it sound like Dana said something incredibly sexist and told her to get on her knees or something. She probably said something about him that he found offensive, so he told her to shut it. As for the leash comment, so what? That’s a standard type of thing people say when somebody needs to curb their words or actions. Who gives a shit?

And I’m sick of the “we need to be accepted by mainstream America” thing. This is how Dana White has always been, and the UFC regularly gets a million buys on PPV. Jon Jones was just on the Tonight Show. Randy Couture and Rampage Jackson have been featured in mainstream Hollywood movies. UFC clips are regularly shown on ESPN. The company could be on HBO or network television if they really wanted to. And the sport is only continuing to get bigger and more popular. What more do you want?

by dropkick101 on Apr 28, 2011 1:16 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

Well, sure. But I was speaking a bit rhetorically. Plus, it’ll be sanctioned in NY in a matter of time. And the sport is continuing to grow that it might potentially “compete” with the NFL shortly. im standing by this due to the fact that i honestly used the same line to one of my employees (male) about one of his employees (also male) recently, i think last week, at work. the guy two levels down came to me with a problem rather than following the chain of command. the problem wasnt an actual problem, just a system in place that he didnt, nor needs to, understand. so i sent him on his way and told his boss, my employee to keep his guy on a leash because he wasted my time by having that meeting with me. that time was wasted because i was not on this very website stirring a pot…rather i was sitting with someone two levels below me talking about thins he doesnt need to be involved with.

His remark may (!) be acceptable, because it was refering to an underling. The remark about Jenna puts her in the same place though – but Tito is NOT higher up in the chain of command. They are supposed to be equals. This illustrates exactly what is wrong with Dana’s comment, guys.

The reason this is hard to see is simply that many people still feel a man should be “in charge” in a relationship and this whole equal-partners thing is just modern-age window-dressing anyway. In every relationship, there is a dominant partner. True equality does not exist (excluding maybe some verrrrryyyy few examples). But that, is a different discussion. ;)

To save me some time on 25% of all threads, here's the universal answer to the Fedor-debate: Fedor is the most accomplished MMA fighter ever. That is a fact. If he still is the best fighter at this point in time is up for debate.

There’s an entirely different context when a man tells another man to put his wife on a leash vs. a manager telling his subordinate to keep a guy on a leash (or shorter leash or whatever).

Like a lot of gender, racial, etc. issues, intent plays a big role in the analysis.

morgan freeman, its an interview he did with mike wallace where wallace attempted to acknowledge that its black history month looking for the typical reaction from a black man, most certainly to follow it with a question like ‘what dies it mean to you?’ or some handjob of the sort. freeman quickly says that black history month is stupid and insulting. black history is american history. he then asks if mike wallace what month is white history month. wallace says hes infact jewish, so freeman rephrases, ‘what month is jewish history month?’. wallace obviously says their isnt one, so freeman asks him if he wants one. wallace says no, and freeman says ‘good, me niether’. really powerful stuff. you can actually see wallace getting the point half way through. he sheepishly asks freeman how we will ever get over racism to which freeman says ‘stop talking about it.’ that simple. worth watching post work, with a glass of scotch no doubt.

It doesn’t take racist examples.

I understood this whole time and take offense at the notion that I could only see sexism if it was compared to racism. I also take offense at the idea that I believe racism is worse than sexism. I never said that.

I talk almost daily with people about sexism. I know some woman have it really tough.

This isn’t the place, but I could talk all day about the ways women and people of color have been used and neglected in America.

Disney movies are a perfect example of how we see women.

Here's where we differ

In America, the word ‘faggot’ has been used like word ‘nigger’ in many ways. To invoke shame, hate, fear and violence.

The word ‘bitch’ is not nice, but has no where near the connotation of the other two.

I will admit that...

But I’ve grown up in a place that has become very multicultural and I’ve watched the way young people treat each other and it just seems like more and more they are ignoring the differences between them. So that is why I think Freeman is onto something.

Kind of a double edged sword. I don’t think it has anything to do with Jenna being female, more so Dana getting mad that she made fun of his bestie Chuck. Everything else aside – sexism, homophobia, whatever you want to point at that Dana does – there’s a certain standard to which public figures are upheld. Dana consistently falls below that standard. As a professional, he should be above getting in Twitter arguments and throwing f-bombs around in public.

It’s irrelevant whether Dana and Jenna make up.

What is relevant is airing your dirty laundry in public like that.

I’m not being a prude – I couldn’t care less if every other word he said was “fuck”. But social decorum dictates that you shouldn’t go around swearing constantly. He violates these social norms, which conflicts with his goal of getting the UFC into the mainstream.

I don’t feel his statements are in any way shape or form hurt the business. We need to start listening to people the way they really talk, hence the Howard Stern reference. You can hear many stars, directors important CEO speak the way they usually speak.

Name one CEO who talks like Dana, because I can’t think of any. Not being a wiseass, seriously.

His comments won’t kill the business, but they don’t help. Like I said, social norms – being polite, respectful, calm, and not vulgar.

By talking the way he does, he perpetuates the stereotype that MMA fighters and fans are a bunch of brash, loudmouthed asses. As the face of the UFC, he should be doing his best to present the UFC in a positive light.

It’s only Twitter? Tell that to Gilbert Gottfried, or any number of other people who’ve tasted the repercussions of their tweets.

Dana White himself isn’t gonna change anyone’s mind. But the way “speaks his mind” does nothing to help the cause of MMA acceptance. I don’t know how you can’t grasp that.

by alicks on Apr 28, 2011 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I can't because

It doesn’t. The regular fan doesn’t give a shit what DW is tweeting or say they probably don’t know all these TMZ like stories are happening. it’s the hardcore fans that even realize that these stories are even happening. What will bring MMA acceptance is more fighter’s exposure more appearances on TV shows. Not a tweet DW made.

by Coeman on Apr 28, 2011 6:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Ugh. Do you even read what I write?

As I’ve tried to make abundantly clear – will Dana’s actions cause the UFC to lose fans? No.

Will Dana’s actions help gain fans in the future? No. No one watches the UFC because they say, “That Dana White, I like his attitude! He’s right, Jenna should shut the fuck up!”

People don’t watch or at least approve of the UFC because, “Those guys are a bunch of crude neanderthals!” Dana helps, even if unintentionally, support this idea every time he does something like this.

The regular fan doesn’t care. The regular person doesn’t care, because it’s irrelevant. But for those who oppose MMA, this is perfect ammunition for them to use against it. Why continually give them that for no real benefit?

I'm a proponent of structure.

I like main-page-worthy articles to be on the main page, and everything else to be sequestered into the FanPost section. I’m not delusional enough to subscribe to a subjective definition of what matters, moreso venting my frustration that my (also subjective) definition of what defines a main-page-worthy article has been violated.

Staff members don’t post in the FanPosts unless there’s a specific reason.

by Mike Fagan on Apr 28, 2011 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Then I guess you could change my previous statement from using “sequestered into the Fanpost section” to “judged with the discretion that a main contributor should have and omitted from the site”.

Then we could argue that I’m not one of the staffed contributors, yet I’m a fan with an opinion that should matter to the contributors since I help provide the ad revenue, and then that there are people other than me that find this article interesting and therefore provide said revenue and that if I don’t like it I should ignore said article, which would then lead me to complain again about it being on the front page, which starts us over at 1-1.

…but that’d be a waste of time, so let’s just call it a day, eh?

So is anything written about a dream fight, a proposed match-up, or anything other than straight fight recaps.

That’s not the same right, at all. This is certainly a discussion board, so hypothetical articles are necessary, but plastering this garbage to the front page, AGAIN, for the 85th time, does nothing.

Hypothetical articles are no more necessary than this one.

Dana said something. It was reported for what it was – a very, very poor choice of words. Just because it’s happened before doesn’t mean it’s not worth pointing out.

According to a list compiled by MMAweekly.com, two of the top 10 most viewed MMA events of all time were women’s fights CBS aired in 2008. Each event drew more than five million viewers.

In fairness to the UFC though

Those involved Carano. The rest of the division is a commercial wasteland, and honestly the top level talent pool is really shallow. And that’s assuming the UFC could even sign Carano (not sure she’d be interested in the typical UFC contract).

Know why those are in the top 10? cuz they were on CBS, a national network channel, which everyone who owns a TV has access to.

The two fights being referenced:

“6. EliteXC on CBS (5/31/2008): Gina Carano vs. Kaitlin Young— 5.508 million viewers (Aired from 10:09 PM to 10:17 PM)”
Know who else was on that card? Kimbo Slice. Plus it was the first time an MMA event aired in primetime on major American network television

“9. EliteXC on CBS (10/4/08): Gina Carano vs. Kelly Kobold— 5.171 million viewers (Aired from 9:45 PM to 9:59 PM)”
Know who else was on that card? Another shocker Kimbo Slice.

Mike...

AIDS is equally offensive to anyone. This isn’t 1980. It has an impact on all walks of life and I’d see it being equally offensive to anyone you said that to. The ‘hang from a tree’ part is correct and I agree with. What I am saying is that this is not one of those situations, as this has the same meaning in all the mentioned usages. In the ‘hang from a tree’ example, the meaning of the phrase changes. As someone stated elsewhere in the thread, it could just as easily be said to Jenna about Tito by someone in the porn industry and it would have the exact same meaning, nothing changes about it. It’sa fairly commonly used phrase for anyone of any sex that is out of line.

In fact the only time I can think of this used was in a movie....

a guy says to another guy after an altercation “why don’t you keep that dog on his fuckin leash” while referring to a guy who appeared to be some bodyguard that came to the aid of that first guy. So yeah, I always took the meaning to be referring to controlling “dogs” that are out of control, but had only ever seen it used while referring to a male.

I figured all the people commenting must know some sexist based history behind the phrase….

douchefest 2011

led by Mike Fagan.

I’m sorry, but I simply cannot take seriously the (self) righteous indignation of the same guy who made a vicious, snarky comment about Randy Couture’s marriages on his TWIQ article the other day. selective moral outrage here folks, come and get your tickets.

now I will concede that Dana’s remark could be construed as sexist, but with a little bit of thought, that possibility can be easily dismissed. for example, if Tito accompanied Jenna to some sort of adult film festival or awards show and started telling well-established porn producers what was what and how they should run things or who in the industry they need to show more respect, one of those guys may very well respond, “Hey Jenna, keep your boy here on a leash.” clearly this is not sexist/misandrist. it’s just another way of telling someone to bite his/her tongue and mind his/her business.

of course, interpretting it that way doesn’t afford Mike Fagan the opportunity to hyperventilate and seem all righteous. is Fagan married? to me, this post reeks of some guy who doesn’t get much attention from the girls in the audience trying to win their approval. I just don’t know what else his motivation would be, unless he actually is so dim that he considers Dana’s tweet to be genuinely misogynistic.

GROAN

are you being willfully dense?

“You’d think Dana White would learn. He was forced to apologize…”
clearly, this is said in a tone of disparagement and disapproval.

“It looked like Dana White had himself under control.”
same here.

“And now this:”
…and this…

“It won’t be so easy to scrub this from the history books.”
…hoping you get the picture…

“I’ll go ahead and be the voice of reason here. Yes, Dana White shouldn’t say these sorts of things in a public venue. Yes, images of female subjugation aren’t appropriate coming out of the mouth (or Blackberry keyboard) of the head of a professional sports organization. Yes, Dana White should apologize.”
and there we have it. the word that cannot help but show itself in any discussion of what is morally right or wrong: “SHOULD”. the word “should” appeals to established moral standards, which, according to you, Dana White violated. that being the case, his transgression was apparently ever so slightly outrageous enough for you to waste your time on the article. hence, “moral outrage”. I’m not suggesting you were frothing at the mouth and pounding your keyboard as you wrote the article, so don’t get it twisted. I’m simply saying you’re trying to lecture Dana White about what is and isn’t acceptable in society. the term usually reserved for this is “moral outrage”.

“he certainly has issues with women "
does he? either way, you certainly seem to be finger-wagging here. thanks dad.

“this is worthy of getting kicked out of all but the most depraved of friendly house parties. Society has deemed this sort of behavior inappropriate of a man of White’s stature and in the forum in which he let his voice be heard. This sort of thing has consequences.”
there, you said it yourself: “society has deemed…” Exactly: you’re appealing to a moral standard. although it is a bit curious that you say “…of a man of White’s stature…”, thereby tacitly suggesting that for people like you or me, it’s more acceptable. this directly on the heels of your appeal to morality. I think you’re confused about some things in your life.

“Trying to rehabilitate Dana White’s views on the fairer sex isn’t worth my time.”
you’re right, dad. although…couldn’t the term “fairer sex” be construed as misogynistic or sexist? I’m not saying it IS, I’m saying that according to (at the very least) many of the opinions on this forum, it could be. personally, I think that’s ridiculous, but going by the standards of those rushing to accuse Dana of inpropriety…

How have we gotten this far without a reference to Spinal Tap’s “Smell the Glove”?

Bunch of kids in here — seriously.

Unprofessional, yes. Big deal, no.

We know what to expect from Dana by now, so this isn’t suprising. We wouldn’t see the commisioner of the MLB or NFL engaged in profane twitter battles, but this is DW. Past that, who gives a shit if he told Jenna Jameson to shut the f up. Telling Tito to reign Jenna in is not the same as calling a female reporter a bitch for doing her job in a manner he disapproved of. Tito has made a career of running his mouth and Jenna made a career of fornicating on camera so it would take something far more egrergious than this to really cross the line with either of them in my opinion.

GOVERNMENT SQUID HOAX !!

The super-rich elite secretly own and operate the world through the mechanisms of governments, media, corporations, institutions and religion. They may be planning a SQUID ALIEN HOAX. I’m talking gigantic, highly-intelligent, bioluminescent, UFO flying mother fucking squid. The elite will pull ancient artifacts out of the ground and have all kinds of bs evidence. Tell somebody in whatever form or fashion you choose – DO NOT BELIEVE THE GOVERNMENT OR THE SQUID OR THE TV OR THE SCIENTISTS – IT’S A TRAP – check my vids on youtube – GOVERNMENT SQUID HOAX

Women in 2011 America don't need special protections

They need a consistently promoted and stacked weight division within the UFC.

There is no problem with what he said.

This will not affect the sport negatively.
I fucking LOVE the fact that Dana acts like a normal guy even though he runs the UFC.

What is this country coming to when a gentleman can’t tell a video prostitute to shut the fuck up? OHHH BUT WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDREN!???!?!?

A normal guy? Seriously?

a lot of people think

normal guys” use the word fagot and bitch repeatedly, and go around farting in peoples’ faces, they think “normal” is what they watch in comedy shows such as South Park, among other things, because, well, ‘that’s just what guys do’. they think shows such as those correctly represents society, that line of logic never seizes to amaze me.
