I rewatched the second episode last night and I thought, “Man couldn’t they get a halfway decent striker to spar with Shields.” Then I saw the sponsor on the back of the guys’ shorts and I realized it was Shields whose striking I thought was atrocious.

I only plot world domination because the cat in my lap tells me to.

i just watched the bully beatdown with shields. they give him three minutes to tko a guy with absolutely no mma training and he can’t do it. His striking is turrible.

Shows how strong his ground is,

when a guy with no striking strings together 15 wins in a row against guys like Condit, Okami, Hendo, Lawler, Miller, ect.

Learn JiuJitsu, it's fun.

Jake Shields looks like Jennifer Garner. They could be brother and sister.

Has Jake Shields ever actually broke someone’s arm? I’m wondering if guys who have actually hurt someone in a match are more consistent submission finishers. Without watching any tape I have no idea if this has any basis but what immediately came to mind was Shinya Aoki and Saku hurting guys in fights and being Godzillas.

This whole tangent was brought about by the throwaway line at the beginning of this clip when Jake says “If he doesn’t tap I’ll snap his arm”

You retired from kick boxing in 2006. If you had to do it all over again, would you have tried fighting in MMA?

Phil Davis betting odds just went kaboom

Frankly I would have liked to see Shields enter the UFC at middleweight, where he could have had the same legacy building opportunity facing Silva as GSP, and there would be plenty of winnable and intriguing contendership matches. Now he is doomed to be outwrestled and outstruck. Who wouldn’t want to see Shields face Maia or Marquardt, let alone Sonnen. He’s shown he can hang with more powerful and larger fighters, so I don’t see his reasoning.

by Cam86 on Apr 28, 2011 12:52 AM EDT reply actions

Outstruck could be a fairly accurate prediction but I don’t see Shields being outwrestled by too many people in the WW division. Aside from Fitch and GSP I just don’t see it happening.

I’d throw Koscheck in with Fitch and GSP, and that makes basically 3 of the top 5 fighters in the UFC’s WW division. On the other hand he’s already beaten Okami and if Sonnen wants to take him down he’d get submitted.

What I find interesting about his grappling with Davis is that we got to see how he reacts to being on bottom. He’s probably more akin to Maia in that he’s able to switch takedowns with guard pulling, sweeps and reversals, which most people discount when looking at how his wrestling matches up with GSP.

by Cam86 on Apr 28, 2011 1:21 AM EDT up reply actions

No, Koscheck is done, he doesn’t set up his power shots, and refuse to utilize his wrestling abilities, he doesn’t deserve to get to fight someone like Shield. Koscheck is a bottom feeder right now, he needs to work his way up again like every other losers. The only Koscheck fight that is worth my money is for him to get in another bout with Daley.

Jake Shield via rear naked choke

GSP is going to be exposed, you can put your money on it. Jake Shield is not going to eat jabs from GSP, he is going to duck them under and take the fight to the ground.

Jake Shield is simply better

George is not a bad fighter at all, but he is going to be exposed by Jake Shield.

No

Just no.

WOW
Jake Shield is simply better

That is a BOLD statement my friend. Jake hasnt dominated people like GSP has. Jake is a good wrestler, a prodigy in BJJ, but his striking is so bad that he couldnt get a tko on someone in bully beatdown. To say is simply better then GSP is shocking. GSP is the best technical striker in the sport. No one can combine takedowns and strikes like gsp. He is the best wrestler in the WW division, and the best TDD in the sport. His BJ is underrated also. Shields is great, but GSP is a legend.

Jules: Normally, both your asses would be dead as fucking fried chicken, but you happen to pull this shit while I'm in a transitional period so I don't wanna kill you, I wanna help you. But I can't give you this case, it don't belong to me. Besides, I've already been through too much shit this morning over this case to hand it over to your dumb ass.

Wait, George St. Pierre is not the best wrestler in the WW division

As you will see this coming Saturday, that honor goes to Shields. The only thing that I am worried about the fight is that the crowd is going to play a factor. Other than that, I couldn’t ask for a better fight. George is only 29 years old, he is still a baby, he is not a legend yet. This is the first time that George is facing a true champion. In the dark, Jake Shields has been the best WW in the world for a long time, people just doesn’t know it yet.

by XiaoChen Yu on Apr 28, 2011 11:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Nope.

Jake may beat GSP, but there will be no exposing. Expose insinuates that GSP was never that good. He is that good. And if Jake can beat him, then that means Jake is also that good.

by pud333 on Apr 28, 2011 2:16 AM EDT up reply actions

GSP always comes with a good game plan

The common theme in all of his recent fights has been his ability to make each fighter he has fought unable to utilise their strongest skill set against him, in particular wrestlers and BJJ fighters.

I can only see him stuffing a lot of takedown attempts and lighting Jake Shields up on the feet.

Gracie doesn't think GSP is "necessarily the toughest guy"

How many times have guys hinted that GSP doesn’t have a fighters heart. I think what confuses Gracie and other meat heads like him is that George is a gentleman and a martial artist. Not a street fighter turned cage fighter like Nick Diaz. I’m a big fan of Diaz too, but George can be tough without acting like a teenager.

A guy who can beat Fitch, Alves, Kos, Hughes and Penn actually has a better claim to being a tough guy than anyone else in mma in my opinion.
