UFC Sued Over 'Fan Expo' Event Name
Hobby Star Marketing, a company which holds pop culture conventions for comic books, science fiction and other pop culture phenomena has sued the UFC over it's use of the Fan Expo name this weekend in Toronto. One of Hobby Star's largest events is FanExpo Canada and they have filed an injunction at the last minute against the UFC. From Comic Book Resources:
In the federal court statement obtained by CBR News, Hobby Star has filed for trade-mark infringement on the name "Fan Expo" as well as the slogan "The Ultimate Fan Experience" and the web domain www.ufcfanexpo.com. The papers were filed in a Toronto federal court and make no mention of previous UFC events labeled as "Fan Expos" such as a London, England event last summer, nor do they mention anything about the company's potential plans for a Fan Expo in Las Vegas this summer. This is likely because Hobby Star only have the "Fan Expo" trademark registered within Canada.
Zuffa, as legal owners of all names and trade-marks associated with the UFC, are listed as the primary defendant while Reed takes a secondary role in the brief as the organizer of the event, which is set to kick off this Friday at the Direct Energy Centre in Toronto.
The document reveals that Hobby Star seeks an injunction against promoting or selling anything involving the mark and slogan as well as an order to "deliver up or destroy upon oath all clothing, goods labels, packages, advertising materials, signage, printed matter, including all plats, moulds, matrices, and other material for producing or printing such items and any other matter or materials in print or electric form" that fall under the offending names. Additionally, in its case Hobby Star cites the fact that a Reed employee named John McGeary was formerly associated with Fan Expo Canada in some capacity and therefore had knowledge of the trade-mark's use in Canada.
While the last minute nature of this move may surprise some, it's one of the best methods to undercut your competitor and take away the necessary time to find a legal way around the problem. There have been a slew of recent actions taken in battles between various convention organizers so this is hardly a surprise in any way other than that there is not a direct relationship between the UFC and the Hobby Star bread and butter of sci-fi, comic and hobby conventions.
We'll have more information on this situation as it develops.
Update: To be clear since I left it out initially. The UFC was sued as well as Reed Exhibitions (the convention organizer). This is likely as much about hitting Reed (who promotes gaming expos and the like) as it is about going after the UFC.

When you can trademark a phrase as generic as “Fan Expo” to screw over an organization who isn’t even competing with you, the world has went to Hell.

And didn’t they also file an injunction against the The Ultimate Fucking Championships porn? A clear “non competitor”
I’m not saying I love Hobby Star’s move. But it’s not like the UFC has been above all kinds of crazy injunctions in their own dealings.

It’s the same thing Don King did to undercut the Mayorga/Thomas fight.

I’d agree with you, it’s not a competitor, but they’d feel like it was “smut” demeaning their stature. Kind of stupid for them to fight against. I think the UFC has 100% right to file against any MMA-related organization benefiting off their name, whether an actual promotion, video game, etc. But at some point this shit is going too far. That’s just my opinion.

Bruce Buffer copyrighted the term "It's Time"....
he also has won infringement suits over the use of the phrase. Tell me that isn’t a little ridiculous…
sure it’s ridiculous, but that’s getting into another conversation. it’s how capitalism works, protecting intellectual property. if u ask me, capitalism is ridiculous but you didn’t.

I don't know what TM rules are in Canada
but Fan Expo, even within the confines of fan conventions, seems to basic to me to be considered a legitimate trademark. Fan is a general term and expo is a commonly used abbreviation for Exposition. Can’t imagine this ever really gets legs.

Well…that’s why you do it last minute, in hopes that you can get the injunction without giving them time to work around it in time for their event.

When you can trademark a phrase as generic as "Fan Expo" to screw over an organization who isn’t even competing with you, the world has went to Hell.
WWF was sued by the Word Wildlife Federation, its not about owning the rights its about money if you make it other people will do what they can to get it.
Actually....
IIRC the World Wildlife Fund & the World Wrestling Federation were both using the same acronym, WWF for years.
It was ACTUALLY, Vince and the wrestling company that initially sued the Wildlife Fund over rights to the acronym. (they wanted to expand their online web base at the time, and didn’t want to be confused with the other company)
The World Wildlife Fund counter sued on the grounds that they have been around a few decades longer and had original rights to the name.
And through a world court they won.
And this is why, Vince & company had to change the name of the World Wrestling Federation to the World Wrestling Entertainment.

Dick move
Suing a charity because you want their acronym… wow
lmao really?
I always thought the wwf got sued, if vince decided to sue a charity then he got what he deserved then.
No doubt
I’m a bit surprised about this law suite leveled against the UFC.
However Toronto Fan Expo/Comiccon has been around for years. Its quite a fun event.
If the UFC has several other fan expos around the world, I don’t completely see the validity in suing them over this.

Wow what a dick move
I hope this doesn’t cause the expo to be shut down. 10s of thousands of fans have already bought tickets to the expo.
Worst case they’ll just change the name to UFC Fan Gathering or some such shit

there's just no, no way
basically the court will tell them they can be adequately compensated in damages, so they’ll never get last minute injunctive relief

From a Devil's Advocate point of view....
So is banning RVCA, Clinch Gear, Affliction, et al (sometimes only temporarily) just because you’re pissed off about something and have the power to do so.

so is banning…what? Is banning reasonable, inconsiderate i didn’t get the second half it wandered off a bit lol. “so is banning because you’re pissed about something and having the power to do so” it just cuts off XD
It was in reply to "This is dumb."
It can’t be much more clear-cut than that.

“to do so”. It doesn’t just cut off. That’s the end of the sentence. It’s correct.

I might be talking out of my ass
But they’re not necessarily the same name. The Canadian “FanExpo” is spelt as one word while the UFC’s is two.
Legal crap is so confusing
Let the fighters fight, let the referees ref, but dear God, don't let the judges judge.
you have a point, but it would only stick if people never said the word out loud.

This is fucking stupid
it’s like when Trump tried to trademark “You’re Fired”.
There's nothing wrong with him trying to trademark that phrase
Trademarking “You’re fired” would stop other reality tv shows from using that phrase as a “catchphrase”. It wouldn’t have any effect on the rest of the world. The same way Apple has a trademark but can still be used to peddle those red/yellow/green fruits.
This is like when the stupid World Wildlife Fund got the WWF to change its name to WWE.
Fucking pandas.
