Maiquel Falcao vs. Tom Lawlor Targeted for UFC 134 in Brazil

MMA Junkie reports that another hard-hitting Brazilian will get the chance to fight in their home country when Maiquel Falcao meets TUF alum, Tom Lawlor at UFC 134: Rio, this August. Falcao hasn't seen action since his UFC debut in November when he made an example of Gerald Harris and sent him packing from the UFC. Lawlor, meanwhile, will be coming off an even longer layoff, with his most recent fight taking place last October where he out-wrestled Patrick Cote for a decision victory, which, like in the Falcao-Harris fight, saw the loser released from his UFC contract.

Maiquel Jose "Big Rig" Falcao Goncalves (26-3)
Win Gerald Harris - Decision (Unanimous) UFC 123
Win Wendres Carlos da Silva - TKO (Punches) AGF
Win Daniel Ludtke - TKO (Knee and Punches) MAFC 2
Tom "The Filthy Mauler" Lawlor (7-3)
Win Patrick Cote - Decision (Unanimous) UFC 121
Loss Joe Doerksen - Submission (Rear-Naked Choke) UFC 113
Loss Aaron Simpson - Decision (Split) UFC FN 20

Aug 27th, live on Pay-per-view from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil:

Anderson Silva vs. Yushin Okami
Mauricio Rua vs. Forrest Griffin
Edson Barboza vs. Ross Pearson
Luiz Cane vs. Stanislav Nedkov
Maiquel Falcao vs. Tom Lawlor
Thiago Tavares vs. Spencer Fisher

So basically it’ll end up being UFC: Brazil vs The World.

I’d pick the Brazilian to win in pretty much all those fights.

I never knew Forrest Griffin was Brazilian

Head says Forrest but where’s the fun in making predictions based on rational thoughts & logic?

by MMAussie on Apr 26, 2011 12:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Basically.

These are all competitive, intriguing fights though. Maybe with the Hep A problem Vitor has, it will be necessary to push his fight with Akiyama back to 134.

His opponent got cut after one of the most boring fights EVER

How the hell does he have that much energy at a weigh in? Crazy focker.

That was pretty much how you summed up Severn’s style there at times.

Not that I condone facism or any ism for that matter. Isms are in my opinion, not good. A person shouldn't believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.

I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.

i think he might’ve said after his last fight that he was done with the crazy intros for awhile, unfortunately.

Lawlor's only chance is in wrestling

Falcao has much better hands and power in his shots. His bjj is much better as well, and the only advantage I see with Lawlor is with wrestling. I see Falcao getting the KO or TKO in this one, and right now, Falcao looks to be one of the most interesting UFC Middleweight prospects in the division, and there aren’t many UFC Middleweight prospects in general.

If the stronger Harris proved unable to take down Falcao, will Lawlor be able to? I don’t think so.

by dribblebib on Apr 26, 2011 12:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Right

Falcao is a solid wrestler in his own right. I don’t see how Lawlor can win this fight.

by AwkwardBoner on Apr 26, 2011 12:54 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think so either. Like I said, I see this being a TKO or KO victory for Falcao. He may even submit Lawlor.

I think people over-rated Harris’ wrestling because he tended to get spectacular slams rather than dragging guys down. Truth be told, I think Lawlor’s a better technical wrestler than Harris. A drag down gets the fight to the floor just as effectively as a slam.

by Steve4192 on Apr 26, 2011 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow seems like you guys were paying attention as well. Falco outwrestling Harris was a huge deal IMO, I don’t see Lawlor being able to capitalize on it much… Falco by brutality here…

This is quite literally feeding Lawler to Falcao

I say that because I think Falcao will eat him. With his teeth.

Might just be me

but I hated how Falcao fought in his first match. It was a weird mixture of being aggressive and cautious at the same time.

by av1o3 on Apr 26, 2011 12:08 AM EDT reply actions

He actually finished Gerald Harris

If only they actually gave him the full five minutes in a round to complete the choke.

Speaking of Harris, sure looked like a good decision to cut him.

I feel bad for Lawler

He’s a character and fun personality but I highly doubt he has the chops to beat Falcao.

People said the same about the Cote fight. I expect a filthy win.

Difference between Cote and Falcao

Is the latter has an actual ground game.

No.

I don’t know what I was thinking. I just looked at pictures and I didn’t realize it caused such a rapid deterioration. I thought it set in later in life. The few pictures of people I had seen before the post all had large upper-skull areas.

But he is losing this one…

Lawlor should dress as a ghost for his weigh-in

A tough fight, I want to see Falcao prove he’s a legitamite prospect that potentially could seriously challenge silva, but I don’t want to see Lawlor served his walking papers (because of the intriguing entrances)

by Robert V-U on Apr 26, 2011 3:36 AM EDT reply actions

thats exactly how i feel too

Falcao needs some wins though, he could be a serious contender im surprised he is taking this long for a fight

by elmojo on Apr 26, 2011 4:50 AM EDT up reply actions

Just read on wiki (yeah ikr) that he was supposed to have fought Alessio Sakara on the Diego/Kampann card, but got injured. He also ran into some trouble with the law, so I’m guessing that’s what lead to his delay.

And speaking of vacationing brazillians, what’s up with Charles Oliveira? My trusty wikipedia still has no updates on the guy.

Good to finally see Falcao back in action, been looking forward to this. He looked really dangerous in the Harris fight, powerful and crisp striking and good ground game. I don’t see Lawlor having much of a chance in this one.
