Jon Jones Explains Injury That Forced Him Off UFC 133

The UFC announced today that Jon Jones has pulled out of his first title defense against former teammate Rashad Evans and Phil Davis will step in to fight Evans.

Jon Jones explains the details of his injury with Authentic Sport Management:
"(The torn tissue in my right hand in the area between my thumb and forefinger) is an injury that’s been recurring since I was a college wrestler, it doesn’t affect my punching or grappling, but I am taking the time and the proper measures to correct this now, so that it doesn’t happen again. I look forward to getting back to training and to my first title defense. As for Rashad, let’s see what happens with Phil Davis. I will be watching that fight with great interest."

Gotta agree with you, it is something that doesn’t have to be fixed, it apparently happened during the fight with Rua yet he waits over a month to decide this? Personally I think he just wants to screw with Rashad.

You may be right. Weird time for elective surgery, although it’s probably not something he had the time or money to do in the past couple years.

SO WHY ARE YOU PULLING OUT OF YOUR FIGHT

by nostraboris on Apr 25, 2011 9:01 PM EDT up reply actions

The injury probably hurts

And going into fights with injuries probably isn’t smart for long term stuff. What I wonder is why does he have to pull out of the fight. Their fight isn’t until August so couldn’t he have surgery and heal by June?

I don’t think he’s faking the injury, why would he, at all. Jones is getting pretty much six figures per fight now.

by HaterSlayer on Apr 25, 2011 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think to many people think hes faking but as he stated it isn’t an injury that affects anything so why would you make this decision a month after it got re injured when you fought Shogun all the meanwhile hyping your title fight and starting shit with Rashad. I almost believe Rashad now about taking Jones down and keeping him there when they sparred just because all signs point to Jones trying to mess with Rashad and really the only people who need to do this(this is on a different level from Sonnen messing with people by trash talking) I feel are people who are worried about this fight or feel they need to change something to gain an advantage before the fight.

Isn't this potentially beneficial for Rashad

I know there is absolutley no guarantee that Rashad beats Davis, but I think we can all agree that Rashad would be best to have a fight before he faces Jones.

It seems from other comment sections that BE mostly believes that Rashad will be able to keep Davis standing and bust him up on the feet. That would be great for Rashad and give him some momentum headed into the Jones fight, which brings me to this point….Why is Jones doing this? Seems like it would be better to fight a ring-rusty Rashad in five months than get rusty yourself waiting for your opponent after they win their next match.

conspiracy theory

Jones and Rashad are BFF again and Evans is moving back to Jacksons. So Jones decided to have surgery and Rashad plans on getting some time in the cage and then a drop to MW.

It could happen. Either way Evans vs Davis is pretty good fight.

Or...

It’s a sign of punishment towards Rashad for refusing to fight team mates over the years, while Jones was easier to pursuade. Jones get’s some auxiliary surgery and off time while Rashawd gets nothing more than another 3 rounder.

I wonder what will Evans’ next move would be if he happens to lose to “Mr. Wonderful”.

Interesting

After the Shogun fight, heard that Jones was facing medical suspension for possible issue with hand. Never heard anything for a while after that then this drops. Fight with Rashad was set for possibly Sept or Oct. Was the UFC hoping that Jones recovered by then without anyone knowing the bette by having his next fight so late in year even iwith Jones needing the supposed rest. Doesnt change much to me anway. Fight is probably delayed until November or December. I;m sure e can wit a few more weeks. Only question is how will Rashad do against Davis especially with the ring rust and will he still be No 1 Contender?

It's the method, not the medical needs.

Dominick Cruz had surgery on a nagging hand injury. He said he was getting it done after the Jorgenson fight, no matter what. He didn’t shit talk Urijah, even though everybody knew that was going to be his next fight.

Jones worked up and hyped a fight, then suddenly says “Nah, my hand needs work. It doesn’t hurt my performance at all and I could realistically be back for a full camp comfortably to have a September date but… nah. The number one contender I just stared down in the cage and shit talked for the past month can sit on the shelf.”

I've figured it out

He’s found a way to prevent Rashad from being champion by delaying yet another title fight for him. Meaning he could end up either not fighting for a title he was supposed to fight for in Sept 2010 until 2012, or not getting a title shot at all by losing to Davis.

That's not comparable

Forrest has always relished the underdog roles. It took him 3 years in the UFC to become a champion.

Jones has had barely 4 years of MMA under his belt and he became the first man to TKO Shogun (unless you count the Coleman I as a true TKO).

And he’s fought middling-to-top competition nearly his entire UFC career.

Good job. Seriously. You put some effort into that post and made your point saliently. I don’t doubt Jones’ potential, nor will I say he is not a damn exciting fighter to watch. This particular thread in this column was about Derek defending Jones. There is a kind of MMA fan, and I’m not even saying it’s bad, that hops on the hype train prematurely. That’s part of what makes us all fans. Being wowed by fighters with amazing potential. It doesn’t just happen in MMA. It happens in all of sports but I think in MMA it’s a bit on overload. Jones has demonstrated some amazing things. Kind of like Brock did and it’s the UFC’s job to capitalize on that kind of buzz. But, if you’ve been watching this sport long enough there are tons of guys who have shown that and then a weakness was found and it gets exploited over and over again and soon that hype dies. I’m in a wait and see mode with Jones as I am with almost every fighter till they prove success against all types over a period of time. I’m not ready to anoint him as a great yet no matter what the marketing machine tells me. He is on the way but he hasn’t reached that destination and this stunt puts a shadow of doubt in my mind, along with other things he has demonstrated. Let’s see what he has when he is truly tested. Till then he can be akin to Mariano Rivera or, as a tip of the hat to John, Kevin Maas. Time will tell.

you, sir, perplex me

first and foremost jon jones should not even be in the same breath as brock lesnar when it comes to accomplishments. brock has less fights and has lost convincingly and even looked horrible in one of his only 5 mma victories. its safe to safe brock was a hype train that got derailed, a lot of people were waiting for the jones train to come off the tracks and it has not. his only loss was a one sided beat down that any legit mma fan (which i include you in) views as a victory. i dont blame hamill for not continuing in that fight, jones just made a novice mistake, hes young with not much training. HOWEVER… when does he become credible in your eyes? as joker pointed out, you and many many others negated his chance to win and jones balled up all those doubts, stuck a stick of dynamite in them and blew them to friggen smithereens. so, at what point does he become legit? at what point does he become the new big thing? at what point does he become great? surely if hes not there now he wouldnt be if he defeated rashad either…who most of us view as a lower tier fighter then rua, and those of us who do not most certainly do not view rashad as legend. to be great, you must defeat greatness…to be a legend, you must defeat a legend… jones crushed greatness, destroyed a legend. i for one have no issue with calling him the ‘present big thing’ or a ‘true champion’, but i respect your right not to. i would like to know what more he must accomplish in order to attain that status in your eyes.

It’s simple. Longevity. That is how greatness is built. Over time. Let’s see what happens over time. When Brock was on his run they built an air of invincibility around him. By the way, you can absolutely compare the two. They both were/are talented fighters who benefited greatly from the UFC hype train. Do you remember “Brocktober”? Then an elite fighter exploited his weakness and blew him apart. Let’s see Jones face fighters with different disciplines and come out on top over a period of time. I think he is damn exciting and incredibly talented. Let’s see him do it against an elite BJJ artist or an elusive striker like Lyoto. Let’s see what happens when gets put on his back and has to work. He has done all required of him thus far but I’m not ready to give anyone the title of great till they prove it over time against the top.

I don't understand

Why people are so sure that Jones will steamroll Evans. A guy who only lost once, to a striker that nobody had figured out at the time. Other than Machida, no one has ever dominated or even defeated Evans. I understand Jones looked invincible in is last fight, but you’d think people would learn not to keep falling into that trap. Different fighter, different day, anything can happen.

Jones has the superior standup

Better wrestling and he actually does something with top control.

Evans is a damn good fighter but of all the LHWs “in the mix” he has the longest shot to beat Jones.

If I were game planning a fight with Jones

I’d look to get inside his reach and land a short hook. Other than a prime Rampage, I think Rashad has the best chance of all LHWs to do that.

Not to mention that , yeah Jones may be the better MMA wrestler right now, Rashad is the closest to matching him and neutralizing that advantage. I don’t think he has better up. Jones looked marvelous last fight on his feet, but I’ve also seen him look open technically. Rashad has better technical boxing imo, and he has knocked people out.

rua is a better striker than rashad

that my friend is fact.

i agree with your point that getting inside and slipping a hook is the way to go, but jones is aware of this. notice everytime opponents try to get inside on him he utilizes a push kick, not to do damage, but to create distance and get the fight back to where he wants it. the kid watches hours of footage and is a great game planner.. i dont see rashad, who could easily cut to MW because hes such a small LHW being able to deal with jones’ length.

Rua was / is the better striker but Rashad may have more freedom in how he approaches the fight due to his stronger wrestling. Plus, Rashad is probably healthier and in better shape than Shogun after his gazillionth knee-surgery.

valid point

im just not sure what jones’ downfall/weakness will be. hes out wrestled world class wrestlers, and he demolished one of, if not the best striker in the 205 division. lets think back to prior to the fight. rusty or not rusty, no one, NO ONE, thought that jones would strike with rua. we all thought that jones’ path to victory was to grab rua and pull him to the mat. we all need to reflect on how shocked we were watching that fight. i remember watching, with my mouth agape as jones out struck rua on the feet. so whats it gonna take??

world class wrestlers outwrestled
top tier strikers outstruck
jitz? maybe?

my guess is a solid combination, patience and a great gas tank to take him into deep water.

by Sterling Archer on Apr 26, 2011 8:41 AM EDT up reply actions

I actually had my mouth firmly closed. Rua has looked exceedingly awful coming back from knee-surgery and I never bought that whole “now that he’s getting the good american-surgery, it’s gonna be different”-talk. So I was not surprised to see Shogun thoroughly stomped everywhere. Actually, my mouth was hanging open in astonishment when he managed to hold his own so well in the first Machida fight because I thought he took that wayyyy early, after barely coming back to decent form against Chuck.

Of course I agree though. The way Jones has demolished everyone it leaves me wondering who and what it takes to beat him as well. Somebody like Evans might at least be able to survive long enough so we can see Jones cardio become a factor as well. As I said, Rashad may actually prove to be the more effective striker against him as well due to being more healthy and dynamic and maybe less concerned about takedowns. But I’m aware I’m already grabbing at straws here. I don’t have much hope he can make it much more competitive than Bader or Hamill – let alone win it.

Right now it truly seems the division is just unprepared for a top-tier next-gen talent. The old guard has nothing for him, the other up-and-comers are not there yet and so the road seems paved for Jones. I guess that’s what the UFC gets for not having any true feeder / leagues or other development-programmes for new talent while stomping out competitors left and right. TUF seems unable to fill that void… so I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. Maybe we just haven’t seen Jones tested in the right way yet. Who would’ve thought that Lesnar’s prime weakness would be a tendency to shrink away from punches? (that it would be stand-up related was always clear though…so that’s not an ideal example as well…)

To save me some time on 25% of all threads, here's the universal answer to the Fedor-debate: Fedor is the most accomplished MMA fighter ever. That is a fact. If he still is the best fighter at this point in time is up for debate.

So, the fight was already scheduled for September/October. Let’s say October, for the sake of this argument. So, Jones has the surgery and sits for 10 weeks, which he wouldn’t have to sit completely, but once again for the sake of this argument. That puts him back to work around July 1st. So he can’t be ready in four months for a fight. Nonsense.

Brock and Juniors fight is June 11

Cain has already targeted Oct. or Nov. Providing Dos Santos and Brock aren’t hurt we will go with Oct. If jones gets the surgery before May or even in may he can start training for a fight in August or Sept. Cain and Jones won’t be fighting that much further apart.

by silent.bisonte33 on Apr 25, 2011 9:20 PM EDT up reply actions

First, Jones should have no problem getting the surgery and being ready for an October bout with Rashad. Second, neither Davis or Rashad are going to fight for the belt in October after fighting in August. Think December.

This is some major BS right here. From the sound of this, it definitely sounds like Jones wanted to find a way from having to fight Rashad, and he found it with this minor hand thing. That or it was the UFC who decided to cancel the Rashad fight just because they hate him nowadays.

If the minor hand injury doesn’t affect him at all, why take the time off? And even if he needs some time to do it, why wouldn’t he be ready for a september/october fight, like it was planned? It doesn’t make any sense, there’s definitely some hidden motive behind all this.

For those that haven't seen it

Jones manager goes into more detail on this with MMAJunkie this morning. UFC was targeting the fight for 133 in August, not September or October, and Jones may be out until November. Lots more here.
