MMA World Cup: Japan and America Collide in the Finals

Can Aoki do this to Frankie Edgar?

Shinya Aoki scored a last second submission to earn his berth in the gold medal match, narrowly beating German Dennis Siver in a great semi-final contest. Aoki will face Frankie Edgar who crushed Canadian Mark Bocek.

Gold Medal Match:

1. Frankie Edgar vs. 2. Shinya Aoki

My Take: I think Frankie Edgar is an amazing fighter. But at some point this is hitting the mat. And when it does, Aoki is going to twist him like a pretzel for the upset.

Bronze Medal Match:

3. Dennis Siver vs. 5. Mark Bocek

My Take: Two rising UFC stars. I think fans are wildly overestimating Siver's skills based on a once in a lifetime bout with G-Sot. Bocek will submit him to bring some much needed glory to Canada, his home and native land.

  1. USA: Frankie Edgar
  2. Asia/AUS: Shinya Aoki
  3. Europe:  Dennis Siver
  4. Brazil: Gesias Cavalcante
  5. Canada: Mark Bocek
  6. CIS and Assorted: Mairbek Taisumov

Or at best, a schoolmarm.

Dude

Have you ever met a schoolmarm? They put MMA fighters to shame.

Aoki and Siver

Aoki because he will be able to submit Edgar, and Siver because he’s too strong for Bocek.

Let the fighters fight, let the referees ref, but dear God, don't let the judges judge.

Siver over Bocek?

Can’t see it. Edgar’s a lock over Aoki.

yeah, I don't see how Edgar fails to implement the same gameplan Gil used.

Edgar will Melendez Aoki.

And Bocek should take Siver.

the voting doesnt represent how the betting line would look

aoki is definitely a live dog, but i think edgar is a decent sized favorite here

Agreed

I still think Siver would blast him, and Siver isn’t half as great as Edgar is.

Somewhere in the world..at this very moment...

Tobikan Judan just took on an athlete that could beat you into oblivion, broke his arm, flipped him off, then sailed off on the rainbow that exudes from his pants.

It's also annoying to see Edgar get no respect

This dude outstruck AND out grappled BJ Penn TWICE despite being smaller and people still have the dude losing to everyone with a name.

Aoki beat Eddie Alvarez.

To say he has no shot is naive.

How serious do you take these picks? these are honestly terrible.

Why are all the picks so ridiculous

I think in every one of these you pick the underdog to win

by Hashmo on Apr 24, 2011 2:54 PM EDT reply actions

I think the writer has a bit too much time on his hands to be honest.
It would have been much easier to just not bother and say Edgar,Maynard and Melendez are the best in the world.
If you are gonna do an imaginary tourney better not to make it a “World Cup” when the vast majority of the best fighters are from North America or Brazil.
Just do the top 8 in each weight class.

This World Cup failed before the votes were tallied...

..because Gilbert Melendez is the USA’s #1 155lb fighter. I’d take Melendez or Alvarez over Edgar..Maynard..Guida..Pettis…10 times out of 10.

Can’t see a match up between Aoki and Edgar going any different than the Aoki v Melendez fight.

by Buddha Brown on Apr 24, 2011 6:34 PM EDT reply actions

I think Aoki has a good chance to upset any elite fighter in the weight class. That makes him a fun pick, as he wins fights that he has no business winning. While his weakness is a truly well-rounded fighter – and that’s becoming somewhat common at LW – his grappling is too tricky to ever count him out.

I never take picks like this all that seriously. I mean, I choose Shields over St. Pierre every chance I get.

Is it possible for an administrator to change my handle? I want it to be "Genki Pseudonym." I just thought of that myself.

Both go to decision

I love me some underdogs, but I see Edgar getting a U.D. and winning all three rounds on all three score cards. It’s a points game with Edger, and he’s a master at it…and then Aoki cries. Siver Vs. Bocek will be one of the better fights in awhile. As much as I’d like to see the red haired dude get bronze, I’d have to go with Siver. I say he wins by a split decision after 15 minutes of back and forth action.
