MMA World Cup: Welterweight Finals
As expected, Georges St. Pierre and Jon Fitch advanced to the gold medal match. Their last fight was a five round shellacking. Has anything changed?
Gold Medal Match:
1. Georges St. Pierre vs. 2. Jon Fitch
My Take: Put on a DVD of their last fight for an idea of how this might go.
Bronze Medal Match:
3. Thiago Alves vs. 5. Dong Hyun Kim
My Take: If you aren't from Brazil and you are not rooting for a man named Dong - you are wrong. I'm tempted to ride Dong to the medal stand, but I just don't think Dong can hold Alves down and impose his will. Dong will certainly try for some furious ground and pound. But Alves is too good on his feet and I can't swallow Dong laying on top of him for 25 minutes. I like Alves here.

Kim isn't on Fitch's level when it comes to grinding out guys.
I think Alves stuffs his takedowns pretty easily and beats him up.

And it was a good one.

You didn’t get it after that sentence sprouted a veritable cascade of “Dong” sentences. To quote Jon Jones- cmonson

25 minutes? Are these title fights?

I think Alves vs. Kim is an interesting fight. They’re two decently well-rounded guys, one a striker and one a grappler. Though looking at how Kim fared against the smaller Nate Diaz’s striking in the third, I think Thiago would TKO him late in the fight. Kim would probably get a few take-downs, and I’d be impressed with Alves if he couldn’t.

Easy picks
GSP by dominating in every position, and getting a 50-45 U.D. But I do see GSP getting put on his back at least once due to him screwing up a few sub attempts. Alves will look great in this fight, and might even put Kim away in the third. I say T.K.O round three for Alves. My favorite part of this matchup would be the interviews leading up to the fight. I have a feeling that Alves would predict a knockout…
