All the UFC 129 Prelims Will Be Streamed for Free In Facebook

All these Canada vs. USA themed UFC 129 Prelims will be shown on Facebook

A while back, Dana White had promised that we would soon be able to see every single fight on a UFC card, and now he has kept his word. The UFC had announced today that five UFC 129 preliminary bouts will be streamed for free on Facebook. With the 2 bouts on Spike TV, and 5 bouts on Facebook, this means that there will be no dark matches, and all 12 fights scheduled will be available for your viewing pleasure.

From the UFC twitter account:

Take two: 5 reasons to "like" us at : we're airing ALL FIVE UFC 129 prelims on 4/30 live and free on Facebook.

Claude Patrick vs. Daniel Roberts and Ivan Menjivar vs. Charlie Valencia were earlier announced to be streamed on Facebook, and now more Canada vs. USA match ups, Jason MacDonald vs. Ryan Jensen, John Makdessi vs. Kyle Watson, and Yves Jabouin vs. Pablo Garza have been added to the streams on the popular social networking site.

I really wanted to see the Makdessi vs Watson fight, and now I get to.

I hope to see some crazy tae kwon do moves from Makdessi

Very nice. It doesn’t have the biggest names but most diehards will be watching it.

I’m excited for Patrick vs. Roberts.

Also, I would like to know does being on FB help fighters in terms of getting more money from sponsors. Because the exposure sure helps, I’m guessing the UFC know the quantity of viewers they are getting through their fight stream.

by IRodC on Apr 21, 2011 5:18 AM EDT reply actions

me too

I hope he’s able to put on another fancy kick clinic. They gave him a grappler in Watson so there’s a good chance if Makdessi can wrestle defensively as well as he did against Audinwood.

Watson will know that it is coming though, which Audinwood clearly didn't.

Makdessi should be a huge favourite though, and i hope that you are right.

There's always that one guy in every one of these FB stories who makes this claim

But humor us anyways, why haven’t you made a fake account just to view the fights?

Every time I've looked...

I’ve noticed you can also access the fights straight from ufc.com’s live events page.

You know facebook is free and available to everyone, right?

Make a couple clicks, type a few words and you could be watching free fights in just a few minutes.

by simpsycho on Apr 21, 2011 9:25 AM EDT up reply actions

Takes you like 5 mins to sign up for one, it’s free and you’ll be able to watch all future pelims…not really seeing an issue here it is only slightly more complicated than ordering a PPV and a lot more free.

Mcloviiiiin!!

by Disco1Stu on Apr 21, 2011 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Not sure how that is a negative personally as pretty much everybody I knows who watches MMA sets aside the entire evening already for it. A couple more hours earlier won’t bother anybody I know I don’t think.

All and all I’m stoked for this news. Here is hoping that it stays.

that want to see a live-match or two, for free nonetheless, without tuning in at 4:00 in the morning

I wish the UFC embraced new technologies and devices as quickly as they have social media. If anything, their increased needless use of Flash on the redesigned site last year suggested that they’re going backwards. There’s no good reason for not making this stream available on iOS/Android devices.

by rabrown on Apr 21, 2011 6:49 AM EDT reply actions

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t Flash still the most-used technology for this type of content nowadays? How about you blame iOS/Android makers for refusing to support Flash instead of the UFC?

by Shnak on Apr 21, 2011 7:36 AM EDT up reply actions

UFC already has an iPhone app (for the US at least, it isn’t available elsewhere) that allows people to watch PPVs on their phone. They could easily expand the app to support free prelims.

I’m only bitching BTW because the Facebook prelim stream will start at about 7:30am where I am and I don’t really want to wake up and move over to my laptop that early in the morning.

by rabrown on Apr 21, 2011 8:10 AM EDT up reply actions

But why watch fights on a 3" screen when you can easily watch them on a laptop?

by Shnak on Apr 21, 2011 8:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Good news but I really hope they improve the quality of the streams no matter what web Browser I use or connection the quality is dire most times.

by Hioki's Hamster on Apr 21, 2011 7:08 AM EDT reply actions

It’s your hardware then. I have no problem getting the stream in almost HD quality

by TheBiggertheyare... on Apr 21, 2011 9:48 AM EDT up reply actions

Streams are a shaky, shaky thing. Nothing about the internet protocol standards was ever built with the expectation of sustained long connections of massive data flow.

Hell, you could have a pristine 100MBps connection and a computer from the future but if you happen to be in just the wrong place you’ll still get bad, choppy streaming quality. It mostly depends on where you are in relation to the local distributed streaming source.

by Pyrgz Krum on Apr 21, 2011 10:31 AM EDT up reply actions

It’s way more likely that server-side it is adjusting the stream dynamically to the needs of their bandwidth / hardware / etc. restrictions. I could prove this with a ping-back I suppose.

by H8ff0000 on Apr 21, 2011 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Not true. I have a 35Mbit/35Mbit connection and a high-end self-built PC. Not a hardware issue, not a connection issue. The quality on mine frequently drops and fluxes back to HD.

by H8ff0000 on Apr 21, 2011 10:58 AM EDT up reply actions

I stream from my 1 year old laptop on a community wireless connection and the fights cut in and out between awesome and decent.

I send the feed to my HDTV and I definitely cannot complain about the quality.

Great news

Good for the fighters, too. Any exposure will help, I’m sure.

Great news. Not only is this a good move to give fans all the fights but this should mean a bump in sponsorship money for the fighters fighting on the undercard because their fights are guaranteed to be seen by a lot of people.

Maybe I’ve just missed it but why has no one ever asked Dana what kind of viewership they are getting on Facebook? I realize he may not give a direct answer but it seems like a relevant question to ask.

Just BE.

I’m not 100% sure, but they have like 5,000,000 likes on Facebook so I imagine they get LOTS of views on there.

Spike TV bouts aren't shown here in the Philippines,

so I wish that they would just put all the good fights on FB instead.

by Anton Tabuena on Apr 21, 2011 9:33 AM EDT reply actions   1 recs

my mind is blown

now what the ufc really needs to do is sell their fights for a reasonable rate after the event.

no reason why i should have to pay more than $5 to watch Shogun/Bones right now if I want to. Even that is pushing it a bit.

If you could go to UFC.com and buy fights the day after they happened for cheap I’d do it for sure.

by Clifford J on Apr 21, 2011 9:58 AM EDT reply actions

It’s like 1.99 a fight for me on UFC.tv

Though i am pissed that i have a subscription to the vault, yet they stopped putting prelim fights on there, and have instead put them on UFC.tv. So now i have a useless subscription
