If Mighty Mouse wins
Has he done enough to get a title shot?… I believe so
by rscott94 on Apr 21, 2011 12:49 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
Probably not.
Miguel’s far enough down the totem pole that a win over him shouldn’t grant a title shot.
But possible title contention down the road? Sure, why not?

I would say so.
DJ’s on a roll, the only guys as close to a title shot at 135 are probably Torres and Barao. I would consider Johnson/ Torres to be a #1 contender match, unless Renan really beats the brakes off of someone good, and DJ/ Torres ends up being a dud (which I doubt it will).

I could see it getting him a #1 contender fight
Against Bowles or Benavidez.
Of course, there aren’t a lot of clear contenders at 135 right now, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him get a shot either.
i don't agree
the ufc’s 135 division is pretty stacked. especially if uriah faber wins against cruz, a lot of fights are opened up.
maybe by “clear contenders” you mean someone who really stands out. if so, i see your point. but there are loads of good 135ers right now.
I agree, lots of excellent fighters
That’s sort of the problem, the pecking order hasn’t really been sorted out because there are so many good guys. With a lot of the other divisions there are certain guys who are “in the mix” at any given time. BW hasn’t really sorted that out yet.
Holy crap. DJ’s one of the few guys that could actually be an improvement over Pickett. This is going to be an amazing fight. Kinda sucks to not get Barao/DJ, but I’m sure he’ll get a quality replacement.
Still a Beer Monster.

Tough to say if Johnson is an improvement over Pickett especially since Pickett beat him in the WEC. Of course, Johnson has gone on a very good win streak since then. Torres is a step up for Mighty Mouse, but it doesn’t even come off as a mismatch or anything like that to me. This will be a good fight, and I am looking forward to it.

Awesome fight. I think Mighty Mouse can win if he uses his speed to keep Torres from getting comfortable.

Damn
I like Johnson, but was really looking forward to Pickett taking on Torres. Would have been great.
Idk man,
DJ is gonna have a hard time getting through Miguel’s reach if he uses it like he did against Banuelos.

DJ is far quicker
And unlike Banuelos Johnson has a fundamental understanding on how to mix things up, I see this fight being very similar to the Joe Benavediz fight without the scary elbows
Johnson is definitely better than Banuelos,
but I think Torres is much more focused and disciplined than he was for his fights with Bowles and Benavidez. The guy just has incredible reach, and is finally putting that great jab of his to use. Mighty Mouse is quicker than greased lightning, but so is Torres’ jab, and I see that as being the determining factor here.
It’ll be a good fight though, and by no means am I dismissing Demetrious’ chance of winning.

I just think Torres is overrated
He has good striking, but he really benefits from being a dominant champion at a time the BW division frankly sucked. I think his guard game is highly overrated, but I just don’t see him being able to deal with anyone who can wrestle decently.
Torres has an active, threatening guard,
but he is also prone getting hit quite a bit. The Beebe fight is a perfect example of this. Stays busy with submission attempts and strikes from the bottom, but also gets hammered with quite a few elbows.

I’m a Mighty Mouse fan ever since we chatted it up over Xbox Live. DJ is a cool freaking dude and really appreciates his fans

That said, this is a tough fight for him but I think his lightning fast takedowns may make the difference. I hope he’s been working on his sub defense, Torres has a very active guard and is good off of his back. Never the less, I’ll take DJ via UD

That's cool that he chatted you on XBL.
Have you seen the Pickett fight though? Brad isn’t exactly a stud wrestler, and he took Johnson down nearly at will (although he couldn’t KEEP him down, once he got there). That was what told me that DJ is way undersized for 135 (aside from his obviously smaller stature).

Honestly, I never saw the DJ/Pickett fight, but Brad is a gamer from what I could tell in the Banuelos fight. But yeah, DJ is definitely better suited for 125. Several weeks after the KID fight, he told me he was about 142 and that was normal for his walk around weight

miguel is going to have a huge reach advantage, this could very well be just like the Banuelos fight if Mighty Mouse can't take Miguel down
or it could be like the Benavidez fight
Miguel can be outstruck by short guys if they good movement…and that’s what MM game is all about

Pretty cool stuff. I’m assuming this will be for the next title shot at 135, which would make sense no matter who wins this or the title. Johnson is very good and fast, but I will give Torres the advantage anyhow. Will be very interesting to see if Mighty Mouse can get inside Torres reach and new conservative striking game.

I’m not saying it’s bad. Do you disagree it could be called conservative in the Banuelos fight? And the one before that if I recall correctly.
by Horselover Fat on Apr 21, 2011 10:44 AM EDT up reply actions
Torres threw around 200 strikes in the Banuelos fight
and landed around 75 clean shots. I would consider that to be a pretty damn good workrate, and not really all that conservative. Miguel was pressing forward for most of the fight as well.
As for the Valencia fight, he definitely was not tentative in any way. Torres dropped him twice and then did this-

That may be so, but it was certainly more conservative game than say his old style of going wild and crazy. Lots of jabs and straight punches, not much else. I thought it was a pretty conservative approach.
by Horselover Fat on Apr 21, 2011 11:37 AM EDT up reply actions
I wouldn't consider that conservative.
Smart, yes. Before, Torres would just brawl and it got him in trouble on multiple occasions. Mizugaki, Bowles, and Benavidez were all able to get inside his huge reach and tag him with shots.
If utilizing his jab makes him “conservative”, then so be it. I just call that good technique.

Okay. Semantics really, I agree it was certainly smart and good technique. I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree on the whether it should be called conservative or not.

Honestly I think he was somewhat conservative against Banuelos but it wasn't that bad anyway.
Against Valencia though? He was fighting smarter than usual but for any other fighter that would have been considered a good aggressive performance.
Huge shot
For mighty mouse here. He looked excellent against Kid, his lightening fast takedowns could cause problems for Torres. I was looking forward to seeing Pickett but I really like this fight.

Bad, bad style match-up for Miguel
I’d love to be proven wrong, but I don’t see Torres staying off his back.
Also…anybody doubt that DJ cold make 125? He’s not big at 135, but I guess there’s nowhere to go in the US weight wise on the big show. He’s like the 135 Frankie; undersized and make up for I with amazing speed, smart game planning and controlled aggression. Gotta love DJ.

Ah, gotcha.
Makes sense, the guys definitely undersized at bantamweight. Dare I say, I think he could even make 115. I just don’t think Johnson is really any bigger than a guy like Somdet.
