First, let me say I love Chicken Salad. I love it in all of its different presentations. Walnuts, cranberries, hot sauce, whatever. I'm down. But, as this season of TUF has unfolded my love for this delicious food has been impacted. What's worse is that this has become the theme of this year's TUF. Chicken shit out of Chicken Salad. TUF, at one time, was a way to bring new fans to MMA and the UFC. Now, with this theme prevailing, and the overall malaise the show has sunk into, I think we can officially state that TUF is going to turn away the casual fan.
Let's remember how vital TUF was to the growth of the UFC. The finale of the first season has been called the most important moment in the history of the UFC. Think about that. That is how important this flagship show once was. Yet, today it has devolved into utter dreck. The stereotypical underbelly of MMA and its fan base is on display week in and week out. The fights are for the most part awful and the only person who seems remotely inspired on the show is JDS. Everyone else looks like they could care less about being there and it seeps into every frame. The worst part is it looks like neither the UFC or Spike plan on doing a thing to change the course of what was once such a vital part of the organization's growth. It's unconscionable what they are doing.
There is only one way to send the message and that is to turn it off. I took TUF off my DVR list tonight and I hope more and more fans do the same. You might think I am overreacting a bit and perhaps I am but I want this sport to grow. I have heard Dana talk about it becoming an Olympic sport and I think it should be. I want to turn on Sportscenter and have GSP vs Shields get the kind of coverage the Masters or Wimbeldon gets. I think the sport has that kind of potential. Every piece of programming that the UFC puts out there either gets them closer or further away from that goal. This show is now pulling away from it.
There are a million ways to fix this show, I won't even go into all of them. But, someone at Zuffa has to step up and realize that this show is horrible and it needs to change. That first season Dana came out and challenged the fighters he uttered that famous question, "Do you want to be a fucking fighter?". It was a stirring speech that gave such clear insight into what the UFC is about. Vince Lombardi or Bill Parcells could have delivered it. Now, we have stooped down to "Chicken shit out of chicken salad!". That is not going to get it done. So, Dana do you want TUF to be a fucking flagship show? Then start getting creative and make it the entertaining entry level show it can be for casual fans or just cancel the damn thing.
