I would like to hear Forrest talk about the idiocy of having Vitor fight in August, but not on the Rio card.

I’d say they’re tied for third at worst. And that’s if you count UFC and Strikeforce as different promotions.

We always counted the UFC and WEC as different promotions. Don’t see how that’s any different

And Bellator has better top level fighters and more exposure in North America. I’d say they’re pretty clearly above MFC

Managing Editor - BloodyElbow.com - SBNation's mixed martial arts headquarters.

by Brent Brookhouse on Apr 21, 2011 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Better exposure?

Don’t go laying that Rebney “MTV2 has the best demos EVA” rhetoric on me. HDNET isn’t exactly a grand media outlet, but they’ve got to be getting as many views as Bellator.

Not just in terms of views but in terms of media exposure. There’s a reason we cover Bellator more than MFC and it’s not just more shows.

Managing Editor - BloodyElbow.com - SBNation's mixed martial arts headquarters.

by Brent Brookhouse on Apr 21, 2011 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions

MFC still has proven sustainability and is the #3 promotion. Bellator has more of a chance to fold, and MFC doesn’t overextend itself. For as much crap as people give Pavelich, he’s done it in Canada.

Yet they can’t do anything even close to really creating a star. If I’m talking to people who casually follow MMA they tend to know that Bellator exists, not so much with MFC

Managing Editor - BloodyElbow.com - SBNation's mixed martial arts headquarters.

by Brent Brookhouse on Apr 21, 2011 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Nobody will create the stars the UFC does. Bellator’s contract hell is killing their prospects for the future. MFC is lax on that part, and those successful prospects will leave. Pavelich really hasn’t found an ultra-exciting guy either. Lima could be that guy, but he’s a guaranteed UFC guy down the road. He’ll leave.

They’re certainly more relevant in the upper-upper echelon, but beyond that the UFC retreads that MFC gets are at least as important if not more than the list of random dudes that show up on some Bellator shows.

I think the big reason a lot of people watch the screen is that it's what they're used to

We all watch the UFC programs on TV, and when you tilt your head up to the screen when the action gets obscured, you just stay more subconciously than anything else. It’s the view and production you’re used to, and when the grappling comes back into effect you naturally go back.

My take on the bellator thing is that Saturdays are such a fucking bad day for their shows. If there isn’t marquee MMA, I’m skipping it for marquee boxing and catching up on Bellator the next morning on DVR. Usually with it playing in the background as I’m going to work on my keyboard for the site and only half paying attention.

I don’t think Bellator events are “bad” or “hard to watch” but i’m not skipping a marquee event in boxing or MMA to catch Bellator.

Considering the Bellator format

Could it be that the tourney format is turning people off? Instead of being ‘unique and exciting’ could the irrelavent nature of the fights outside of their own promotion, make it easily dismissable?

Also, it is indeed in dire need of an HD broadcast.

I still think Bellator should do Saturday afternoons. Old school boxing on NBC style. NBC used to kill it with saturday afternoon boxing ratings because people are hanging out in their house, killing time until the night when they’ve got whatever to do. Saturday evening/night though? That’s a real hard time to find success.

Commercials are a necesity

But that’s another thing that bugs me about Bellator. It feels like there are more ads, not to mention BAD ads. How many times do I need to see Randy’s door-based workout machine? I didn’t want it the first time, I don’t want it thirteen times later.

But not that many times over the course over a few hours.

On a pretty good day? I can only find one day in the past few months that BE has done less views than Bellator drew with their last show…

With the ability to show prelims on Facebook…there REALLY is no reason to not see 5 round non-title fights between title contender level fighters.

Am I the only one who thinks the UFC is really missing the boat by pushing just the GSP-Shields fight in the lead up to UFC 129? I know a lot of “casuals” who have zero interest in this show, mainly because they don’t know how awesome the rest of the card is. The GSP-Shields fight on it’s own is not particularly compelling.

I think the choice to run a Primetime series on it is weird

For major fights it makes sense, but it’s not like there’s any kind of new ground to break on the guy. There are only so many times that I can see Zahabi hold mits for GSP and say he’s the greatest.

They would have been better served if the Primetime was centered around Aldo-Hominick, or even Couture-Machida.

Maybe doing a three-part Countdown where they do the top three

Instead of just the main event.

Watching elite fighters train is the only reason I watch the Primetime series

I’d rather see fights like Couture/Machida (two former champions, mind you) get 5 rounds risk having to bump Vladimir Matyushenko vs. Jason Brilz from the PPV than GUARANTEE that I get to see Vlad/Brilz because we HAVE to have 5 fights guaranteed on the PPV

Jose’s manager should allow him to do interviews if they want publicity for him. None of his guys are the kind of star they should be because of him. #justsaying

The UFC putting a youtube video of Aldo is a GREAT idea. Of course, they’d probably pull their own video due to copyright infringement

Jose Aldo

Would do well with a “UFC viral leaked” video on YouTube a la El Guerrero – Cain Velasquez prior to UFC 121 or Captain America: The UFC’s Secret Weapon vs Boxing prior to UFC 118

I think the lack of promotion for Aldo-Hominick is the UFC’s worry that selling Jose as this monster who’s been destroying everyone and then Hominick ends up winning a decision in Canada. By not hyping Aldo the UFC can put together a highlight for both of them before the fight (Canadian pride for Hominick, Aldo’s highlight reel KOs, whatever they want) and whoever takes the fight becomes a much bigger draw as the champion with a potentially stronger fanbase who didn’t buy the card for this fight.

You retired from kick boxing in 2006. If you had to do it all over again, would you have tried fighting in MMA?

If Aldo loses, and becomes a “former UFC champion” while going 0-1 in the promotion, I will laugh until I cry.

If the UFC would give open access to their video library, it could only help their brand...

People would see these amazing fights, for free, and it would basically reinforce the notion that if you want to see high level MMA, you come to the UFC. New fans could compare the UFC product to what is on television now, and see for themselves how superior the UFC is.

Seems like the value of bringing in new fans and the possible future PPV buys would be so much greater than the $1.99 or whatever they charge on a per fight basis to the current fanbase.

by SteveevaD on Apr 21, 2011 5:52 PM EDT reply actions

I don't think they can give them away for free, since there's still value

But I do think that playing with the pricing structure could help things. Maybe making a $10-15/month for a free-for all would work, with the past three to five events being locked out to keep up DVD/PPV sales.

They used to have a free-for-all, then cut it off within the last year or so. Also, the UFC Vault is a terrible piece of software.

by Mike Fagan on Apr 21, 2011 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the software is fine

But the navigation is god-awful. I bought a PPV to stream it, and actually getting to the prelims to watch later was extremely difficult, not to mention having to login several times.

Certainly. Seems like there are plenty of options to leverage their brand and past aquisitions instead of nickle and diming the current fanbase.
