UFC 129: Jake Shields Confident He'll Take the Belt From GSP

Two dominant welterweights meet in Toronto for the biggest UFC event in history - Will Georges St. Pierre continue his dominance over the welterweight division, or will Jake Shields begin his reign in Toronto? We'll find out April 30th:
"To become the UFC welterweight champion would mean everything to me. This is what I've spent my last 11 years pursuing with all my energy. This is something I plan on doing April 30th."

"I've been in these other shows and heard everyone say GSP is the greatest. When I was over in EliteXC beating everyone else, when I was in Strikeforce beating everyone else, at Rumble on the Rock and everyone kept on talking about GSP, I kept on winning and winning and beating good competition. I've been looking at this guy and wanting to fight him for years."

"I'm just thinking about going out there and beating him. They can boo me or cheer me, but I'm going out there to beat GSP."
Apr 30th, live on Pay-per-view from Toronto, Ontario, Canada:
Jake Shields (26-4-1) [Num. 3] +365
Win Martin Kampmann - Decision (Split) UFC 121
Win Dan Henderson - Decision (Unanimous) Strikeforce
Win Jason Miller - Decision (Unanimous) Strikeforce
Georges "Rush" St. Pierre (21-2) [Num. 1] -500
Win Josh Koscheck - Decision (Unanimous) UFC 124
Win Dan Hardy - Decision (Unanimous) UFC 111
Win Thiago Alves - Decision (Unanimous) UFC 100

Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. Security does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than exposure.

Two things

First, Shields’ striking looks pretty weak, even in training promos
Second, Who is that guy on the magazine cover at the end, with “Jake Shields” under him? He’s ripped.

That's a lot of decisions for both of them.

Also, it’s amusing that Jake has his belts sitting on Ikea shelves.

One he loses

Once he loses…Jake Shields will become the biggest gatekeeper in MMA history. The only real reason hes getting a title shot is because theres no other fighters at WW right now. You can put anyone in front of GSP in Toronto and it will sell out no matter what. I guarantee you that it could have been a featherweight and the tickets would have still sold out rapidly, why…because people come to see GSP. The UFC will never give Jake Shields a title shot again, hes a terribly boring fighter. He makes Jon Fitch look like Anderson SIlva. I bet my account on here, sherdog, youtube, and where ever else that he will retire without a second shot at the title.

I wish death upon no one, but not all deserve to live.

makes Fitch look like a anderson silva?

what… the only exciting fight Fitch has ever had is when GSP beat his ass. At least Shields tries to gain more dominant position AND he subs people he should sub (like lawler, daley, ect). Fitch can’t even finish people who are well below his talents.

by dbcb on Apr 2, 2011 10:55 AM EDT up reply actions

i dont even like shields

and think GSP will destroy him (aka dominant decision lol) but I don’t understand the hate. Shields has tried to fight the best people in whatever org he is in, including moving up in weight to do that. And including changing promotions to do this.

by dbcb on Apr 2, 2011 10:57 AM EDT up reply actions

good point

GSP is mostly concerned with dominating where he has the biggest advantage, and does not really want to take any risks after the Serra loss. Shields on the other hand seems to want to take risks….when he first signed with the UFC he wanted to fight Silva as his first fight!

I’m in no way saying he’s going to win, or even come close, but you gotta love a guy who wants nothing but to fight the best…..and he’s more than willing to move around promotions and weight classes to do so.

by OmoPlata on Apr 3, 2011 9:21 AM EDT up reply actions

hm..

I don’t think this is accurate. Jon Fitch, regardless of your opinion of him, still wins fights. He is ranked #2, and I wouldn’t say that ranking matches the “gatekeeper” status. Shields should be about as good as Fitch, based on most prior fights. You might not like them, they might be boring, but they win. Get over it.

I honestly think GSP is going to be on his bike, jabbing and backing away, essentially refusing to significantly engage, at least for the first couple of rounds. GSP will do everything possible to keep this on the feet and at a distance, and he may well have the speed and athleticism to do so, but if Shields gets his hands on him, he will likely get dragged down.

Here are the takedown attempts made on GSP in the UFC:
Koscheck II: 1/4
Hardy: 0/0
Alves: 0/0
Penn II: 0/1
Fitch: 0/6
Serra II: 0/0
Hughes III: 0/3
Koscheck I: 1/4
Serra: 0/0
Hughes II: 0/6
Penn I: 1/1
Sherk: 0/3
Trigg: 0/1
Miller: 1/6
Hughes I: 2/7
Hieron: 0/3
Karo: 0/2

I’ve highlighted the Hughes fights, and the Fitch fight. It’s clear those guys wanted to drag the fight to the floor, and could only do it 2 times out of a combined 22 times. Pretty impressive TDD.

Where Shields excels is once he gets his hands on someone, even if it is while he is being taken down himself.

He was injured during camp and apparently had a weight cut gone wrong to boot against Kampmann – he will look nothing like that again.

I have to disagree. The Kampmann fight definately didn’t look good for Shields, but if you put it into percpective, he out grappled Kampmann completely gassed. Thats a damn good grappler if you can still gain dominant position over and over with nothing in the tank.

didnt that fight end with jake sinking in a body triangle and working a choke?

He got reversed and Kampman scrambled to his feet multiple times before any gassing. And GSP is far superior, with far superior takedown defense, as well as explosive athleticism. Shields is not going to come close to handling GSP on the mat, and that’s if he can get it there more than once or twice.

by Hardcharger on Apr 2, 2011 2:37 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

In all fairness

Henderson is not remotely the MMA Wrestler that GSP is, 15+ year ago Olympic GR credentials or not. Shields did take Askren down in training, but only when they started the drill with him already pushing Askren against the wall – he never took him down from distance or when they weren’t already engaged.

I just don’t see Shields’ wrestling being any better than Koscheck’s or Fitch’s. From what I’ve seen, he utilizes the single leg takedown a lot against the cage and really forces that takedown wearing out his energy. He does use other takedowns as well, but I have seen that he really forces his takedowns sapping his strength and cardio. GSP has better standup than Shields, and I just have a hard time seeing Shields being able to take GSP down. Shields has great BJJ and better than most opponents that GSP fought (Penn MAY be better at BJJ), but it’s not like GSP is some slouch on the ground either. Serra, Fitch, and Penn are all legit BJJ blackbelts, and Hughes while not having a BJJ belt, is BJJ blackbelt level, so I feel that GSP isn’t in trouble just because he hits the floor with Shields.

So why isn’t the UFC using Jake’s SF footage for highlights? Zuffa owns the video library now… It’s kind of sad seeing that ugly Kampmann fight spliced in there for 0.5 second long bursts…

what’s the point of working out with chains draped over the bar? did they run out of regular weights? what kind of half-assed gym is that? half the weight of the chains never makes it off the floor. it reminds me of marky mark curling cinder blocks. cheesy.

by tha dude on Apr 2, 2011 3:24 PM EDT reply actions

half the weight of the chains never makes it off the floor

That’s kind of the point. Using chains is way of developing explosive power. The purpose is to teach a lifter to explode through their lifts. As Jake brings the bar down to his chest the chains start to coil up on the floor and the bar gets lighter. As Jake begins pushing the bar away from his chest the chain links start to come off the floor and the bar gets heavier. In order to get the lock out at the top of the lift, you have to produce an increasing amount of force from the bottom to the top. Like I said, it teaches you to explode through the lift.

by KAN0 on Apr 2, 2011 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Chains or bands are usually used to vary resistance for dynamic (speed) training to increase explosiveness. The further you get through the movement, the greater the resistance (weight essentially). High level stuff, when done correctly.

It's because the technique just isn't there.

He needs to spend some time with a high-level boxing trainer because even his GnP looks weak. The disparity in the standup game is going to be so obvious early on and throughout this fight…Shields should have fought somebody like Kos first but they needed a fresh victim for GSP.
