UFC 131: Lesnar vs. dos Santos Fan Made Trailer

UFC 131: Lesnar vs. dos Santos takes places June 11th at Rogers Arena in British Columbia, Canada. Former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar faces the man with the most dangerous hands in the heavyweight division – Junior dos Santos in the main event. This fight will determine who will be the first to challenge the returning Cain Velasquez.

Brock Lesnar on TUF 13: The Aftermath:
"Obviously as a fighter you want to keep continuing to evolve, and I think as my fights have evolved I have faced guys with better boxing skills and it's an area I definitely need to work on. As far as learning… I don't know if you ever get used to taking punches, but that's not the problem. The problem is all my other assets have been farther ahead of the game and this is one we're going to have to keep lagging along and not get frustrated and understand I got to get better."
Junior dos Santos on The MMA Hour:
"My wrestling is very good and I think it will be hard for him to put me down. I will be very prepared. I will be in shape. I have to be one hundred percent in that fight. If he tries to put me down - for sure, he will try - but I will get up and keep the fight (standing). That's my way to win the fight. I'm looking for the knockout all the time. He's a wrestler, so he feels uncomfortable when people throw punches on him. I think his fight against Cain Velasquez shows good things for me, because I think he's got a weak chin. I will try to use that, try to throw some punches and...try to use my boxing."

ganna be a good fight JDS by (T)KO

by NastyGuido on Apr 19, 2011 8:27 PM EDT reply actions

Brock needs to take his time. Every time he rushes the fight (Mir I, Cain) he loses. If he comes in and sticks to the goddamn game plan I think he can win this fight. I think if he puts together a solid defensive game plan on the feet, he can get an opening for a takedown, work in JDS half gaurd and pound him out.

I agree fully.

However only if he has worked on his striking defense. If not it doesnt matter if he takes his time, he will probably get TKOed. He needs to use his wrestling against this striker and get him to the ground quick and start pounding on him to tire him out. If he can work the ground like Jones did against Shogun he could easily tire JDS out in the first round.

I was so upset watching how much he was trying to do so quickly...

It still hurts my heart that he went in there like an animal instead of taking his time

The days as champ are done... but the juggernaut known as Brock Lesnar will return.

by HitokiriX on Apr 19, 2011 11:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree. However, I think that we tend to forget that Lesnar has less than ten fights under his belt, and following a game plan against this level of competition is much easier said than done for someone with so little MMA experience. Granted, we’ve seen Lesnar stick to a gameplan at times, but now he is fighting fighters better than Frank Mir or Heath Herring where a wrestling gameplan is much easier.

If he comes in and sticks to the goddamn game plan some unnamed person follows the plan and brings the sign, I think he can win this fight.

Jesus guys, Lesnar is going to get killed. Why is he pushing for big fights? He should be training striking for 6 months straight if he wants to be champ again. Plus he’s getting smaller by the second. Shit!

by p123 on Apr 19, 2011 8:39 PM EDT reply actions

I agree he should try golden glory for a while, but what do you mean he is getting smaller by the second?

Look how little he looks next to Dos Santos…

by p123 on Apr 19, 2011 8:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Brock looks massive. Little bigger than Santos, whose a huge individual in his own right. But yes, I do think Santos is going to land some nasty uppercuts, hooks and finish this one early. If he can stuff Brock, his confidence will go out the window.

Brock does not look massive in comparison to Dos Santos. Cigano is not being dwarfed here at all from what I can tell…

huh? you may want to read my comment again.

Ha!

But I like that he is gonna try and subdue the fire by doing it his way. Yeah its stubborn, but thats who that man is. A stubborn sum*itch.
…And you’d get smaller as well if they threatened to take away your stomach and intestine and whatever the hell else and give you a bag that had ‘toilet’ written on it because of a lifestyle that included 100% red meat and nothing else.

I mean he is significantly smaller here than he was against Cain… The Cain fight was Brock in his best shape IMO, I think he has been much better post surgery in shape wise…

by p123 on Apr 19, 2011 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Ya I never really noticed how much smaller he has gotten. That surgery sure did put him through the ringer though. Probably still getting used to it. I dont think it should make a huge difference if he can train with out problems. I really wish he would go to golden glory for 6 months. One training session with Overeem and those hands will be up!

He doesn’t even need to go to Holland, he has Pat Barry right here, but Pat (or anyone else for that matter) isn’t allowed to hit Brock in the face (or anywhere else for THAT matter)…what can you gonna do?
If he won’t let an elite striker in his backyard hit him in sparring, he dam sure not gonna fly to get accosted by Ubereem.

Very good point. Barry is the best kick boxer in the Division. If barry could actually spare with him, he would be so much better. I will never understand how an MMA can train and say hey we can spare but no its to the face? Really WTF!!!!

by RJshock 305 on Apr 19, 2011 9:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Well I don’t know if that was ever confirmed for us to be stating it so factually. From what I recall, Bas Rutten is the one who has said that based on the way Brock looks striking, that he must not be getting hit in the face sparring, in which he asked Barry, who didn’t reply, but Bas got the feeling he was agreeing…

I mean, Bas is probably right, Brock reacts to punches like people do there first day in training, but I am just making sure thats were you got that info from, and not some exclusive interview or something…

I don’t think people are realizing that Dos Santos is probably the biggest, most athletic guy Brock has ever fought… Carwin bigger, but not as fluid same with Mir….

Dos Santos is a real athlete.. This could get really really ugly…

by p123 on Apr 19, 2011 9:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Most Athletic guy I say is Cain. No one in the HW division has Cain ring presence and technical striking skills. Ha has the fastest hands in the division as well. Also he is probably one of the hardest strikers as well. Behind Carwin, and Dos Santos.

Got it from Bas as well and I have yet to hear or see Pat and folks refute it on twitter or anything. You will never get me to say getting hit in the face is worthwhile endeavor, but if your job is to hit someone in the face, then your opponents job is the same. Proper prep.

I remember watching the training session with Pat and Brock for the Cain fight and I remember saying to myself “Why Is Barry and Brock wrestling? That, in any circumstance, is not a strength of Pat…HIT HIM PAT!!!”

Combining that with what Bas said a time later, I did my best Sherlock Holmes impersonation…plus Bas doesn’t strike me as the type of guy who would lie about a conversation he had with a named fighter AND actually name the fighter (no “i can’t reveal my sources” slogan) for the sake of getting his name in the headlines or some web hits. Chael Sonnen, that’s another topic….

Barry’s striking hasn’t impressed me much lately. He throws single punches and kicks and gasses quickly. Sure his power is there, but where are the combinations? where are the kicks AFTER throwing a jab or straight? It’s odd. But since the Heavyweight division has such a small amount of great strikers I would say he is still up there. JDS has better standup though.

by p123 on Apr 19, 2011 9:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I was a little taken back the first time I saw a pic of both fighters side by side and Cigano was just as big as Lesnar and I was like either Brock lost some freaking weight or Dos just jumped twenty pounds. I don’t remember seeing Santos bigger than 240 at any time…maybe Brock is in the process of bulking up now though?

Brock may be just too old to maintain that much muscle anymore. If you look at Hughes/Franklin/Wand, you will see when they hit 34/35 their amount of muscle dropped significantly…

by p123 on Apr 19, 2011 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions

My own thing with those weight drop offs can be a combination of either surgeries/legacy cemented/bored of the daily grind of weight lifting/and or scared of getting pinched on steroids. If you look at what Vitor Belfort looked like at 19…25…now? Come on….

When you truly have flexible, athletic muscle, that’s the very last thing to go. Track stars, certain positions in football and futbol, etc…Look at Herschel Walker. That man has been in athletics his entire life and look at his build. Once you feed the body proper nutrition, muscle is not a hindrance. But when you go the route of having a diet that would make a caveman squeamish and thinking that your superior workout routine will negate the ill effects, it always comes back to bite em. In Brock’s case, it almost killed him.

by battlestar on Apr 19, 2011 9:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Well muscle dropping off due to age is a fact, regardless of diet/exercise. Not much you can do about that, although you can limit it with proper diet/exercise…

Do you remember Hughes and Franklin, and how tremendous they both were back then, and then see how they look now. Wand too… I don’t want to suggest steriods, I mean it could be, but even so, that’s just natural to getting older IMO…

Not denying that at all, muscle will drop off but not rapidly as some has occurred. Its almost like some of them swapped bodies with people who haven’t lifted weights for ten years—-
These guys aren’t dropping to another weight class but their body is completely different now and it wasn’t like they retired for 2 or three years when the rapid degradation happened. What you see now, is what there real bodies look like without the extra….

I give Wand a pass because he has been in so many surgeries so I think that could be it…Matt Hughes says he rarely used weights to train so…

looks good can't wait

Lesnar will take him down and Dos Santos will be able to get back up. Who gets more takedowns versus who get’s to their feet more is the question. If it stays up I think it’s only a matter of time, but the one thing about Jr that bothers me is he gets hit in the face. Whether or not he moves his face with the blow is hard to tell most of the time, or if maybe he’s iron-chinned, or maybe if it’s a combo of both, but either way I hope Brock doesn’t land clean on him. I’m picking Dos Santos via TKO, round 2

Santos vs. Velasquez could be a hell of a fight. I hope Junior can stuff Brock and get pass this fight. I don’t think he will have a problem.

Reem vs. Santos would be a fight of the night or year candidate for sure. Would be a fun striking match, but overall yes I agree. Overeem is a little too much with his knees and power. You never know though!

even if you aren’t a JDS mark (I am) you should be rooting for the outcome that makes the most compelling championship fight…which isn’t Brock getting tooled again.

Brock doesnt have a weak chin

But oh boy does he not like getting hit, like a bear being afraid of bee stings

Cigano is a warrior, a fucking man as well, he could have just waited and fought Cain but chose to fight a beastly wrastler.

Cigano’s record doesnt show that hes gone against a wrestler before, so I cant say he will have an easy time trying to blast brock with shots, this could be brocks fight to win but unfortunately brock doesnt bode too well against wrestler/boxers aka Cain
