UFC 129: Jake Shields Is Prepared To Fight Off His Back Against GSP

#1 contender Jake Shields is looking for the submission win on April 30th in Toronto, Ontario at UFC 129. Shields talks to MMACanada.net and says he's prepared to fight off of his back if taken down by the wrestling skills of Georges St. Pierre.
"I think it's going to be a great fight. I'm excited. I think GSP is phenomenal fighter; I have a ton of respect for him. It's going to be an all out war but I see myself winning. I'm not going out there to give him a good fight; I'm going out there to be the UFC champ."

"I think the wrestling is pretty much even. (But) I think I have the superiority in the submission (game) over him though."

"I think I'm going to submit him. I know he's not easy to submit. But I'm going to be hunting for submissions from every angle. I think he'll take me down. I think I'll be on my back this fight, but I can fight off my back."

gsp isnt the best at all four tricks.

Striking- spider or MegaReem
Wrestling- maybe gsp, but there is askren, soto , cormier, couture, lindland, sonnen, shields?<—— we will find out about that one on the 30th.
Clinch- couture, MegaReem, Spider, Lindland

Jiu Jitsu- Werdum, roger gracie, jacare, Maia, Xande Ribiero, Palhares,Jake Shields, and many more.
Gsp is the most well rounded and fights with his brain not his heart.

Wow. Thanks for that.

I meant in his weight class and in terms of MMA fighting. He’d lose to all of those wrestlers in a freestyle collegiate wrestling match (he’d prob also lose to Hughes), but what difference does that make?

by Gideon Jay on Apr 18, 2011 12:35 PM EDT up reply actions

@the-gentle-way

You’re missing the point of GSP’s skillset, his striking is the best because he freaks out better strikers with occasional TDs or grinding, see how much of a joke he made BJPenn and Alves’ striking looking, the latter done with an injury sustained mid fight.

His wrestling is also better than any of those listed in mma, certainly not straight up wrestling, but in mma. His TDD is fucked, high eighties, and his TD success rate is also surreal, high eighties or low nineties, can’t remember. And this is because he doesn’t need to rely on a simple shoot or clinch drag like Lindland or Couture respectively, he has the crisp striking to set up beautifully transitioned TDs.

He’s the prototype of the new wave of mma fighters imo, he shows that these aren’t distinct skillsets, but skillsets that are absolutely inter-related and really improved by one another. His transitional ability once in top control from his BJJ and ability to guard and scramble off his back in the rare rare instances where he gets taken down are also impressive.

by Matty Euripides Castourkas on Apr 18, 2011 1:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly.

It’s a lot easier to wrestle when you square your legs and keep your hands at your face.

by Gideon Jay on Apr 18, 2011 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions

He is the best at each

Because he complements each skill with his skills in another aspect. His striking is complemented by his wrestling, his wrestling by his jiu-jitsu, all of the fighters you listed are generally good at one thing. GSP matches that by being able to outclass them at what they suck at.

Let the fighters fight, let the referees ref, but dear God, don't let the judges judge.

I think he's implying

that he might be looking to pull guard if his takedowns fail. His chances on the bottom are better than his chances on the feet, to be honest. At least there he can work sweeps and try to set up his guillotine.

Pulling guard puts you within range of his fists.

Just saying. Not a great strategy. Too bad he can’t bring a rifle into the cage with him. That’d be his best shot.

by Gideon Jay on Apr 18, 2011 11:19 AM EDT up reply actions

True,

but I honestly think Shields can protect himself better from his guard than he can standing, where you’re just waiting for the other hat to drop.

Jake is human super glue.

He never tries to strike, that’s where kos and fitch fucked up. Jake will never attempt to stike he will move right to the clinch….. likeb he always does.

That's assuming he will just be able to get right into a clinch situation.

I think GSP will mark him up with the jab before Shields can tie him up.

I wish I could forget the Kampmann fight...

…just can’t get excited about Shields. Think GSP is a cut above the rest of the weight class, including Jake.

by normski on Apr 18, 2011 8:56 AM EDT reply actions

Personally, i think GSP is gonna smash your face into a hamburger patty

Kos style.

No reason for GSP to take this to the ground. He can just punch your face, at will, all night long.

Gsp might not have a choice. Shields desperate anaconda style takedowns are vastly underrated…

It's gonna be worse than that...

GSP doesn’t have to worry about a big punch, he can do whatever the hell he wants. TKO in the 2nd round, after many failed takedown attempts by Shields.

Judging by some of the comments here

I guess it would be best for Jake not to say anything or detail all the ways GSP is better and how he (Shields) is going to lose.

That would certainly be some fantastic promotion.

While I have no doubt

that Sheilds is capable of fighting from his back, but my real question is, who has he fought that will make him work from the bottom like GSP will if it gets to that. I haven’t gone and watched all of Jakes fights, but from what I’ve seen, unless he cracks GSP standing, his only real chance is getting on top of Georges and pounding him out.

I don't always hope for draft picks, but when I do, I prefer Owen Marecic.

I still give gsp the win but if shields grabs you, he’s staying on ya for quite some time.

gsp’s gonna keep this one standing

if shields can hit some takedowns he’ll make the fight interesting, if he cant…. well then its gonna get ugly

Shields vs Fitch

Who wins? I think Shields does. Am I wrong in thinking this?

by Shnak on Apr 18, 2011 10:17 AM EDT reply actions

hard to say.

actually a very interesting match up.

shields has better jiu-jitsu and wrestling (by which i mean takedown percentage). cardio is equal. so on papter i’m thinking shields, although remember how killer fitch’s submission defence is.

what fitch really has is a kind of relentless game that wears people down. i would never underestimate him. i also think he might have the edge in stand up.

you might be looking at a crappy boxing match.

anyway, it’s a very interesting fight.

by Clifford J on Apr 18, 2011 10:29 AM EDT up reply actions

the good news is

one way or another i think we see that fight, unless shields moves back up to 185 (which he might).

by Clifford J on Apr 18, 2011 10:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Have you seen their grappling matches?

There are basically 2 ways they play out- Fitch gets on top and gets caught in guillotine, taps. Or Fitch gets on top, avoids guillotine, wins on points. Fitch also has better striking and I think he would probably be able to grind out the decision over Shields.

by ElliotMatheny on Apr 18, 2011 11:06 AM EDT up reply actions

So, Shields’s wrestling isn’t good enough to take Fitch down, or to reverse him if he gets taken down himself?

by Shnak on Apr 18, 2011 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Have you seen their 2 grappling matches?

Fitch has a decided wrestling advantage. And now that his submission defense has improved, I think he could avoid getting subbed and grind Shields down from the top.

I think Shields COULD potentially get some takedowns and/ or sweeps, but I think Fitch stays on top most of the time, and wins most of the wrestling exchanges.

Actually, no, I haven’t seen their grappling matches.

So, you’re basically saying that Fitch handles Shields rather easily? Man, here I was hyping myself up thinking that Shields could make it into a good fight against GSP… Guess not.

I watched bits of them last night… seemed to be like 10 years old. I’m not going to give those too much weight because of how old they are, but Shields seemed to do okay. I’d give him a decent chance at subbing Fitch.

by Shnak on Apr 19, 2011 7:32 AM EDT up reply actions

I think the thing to take away from those matches

is that Fitch is the superior wrestler, Shields was constantly attacking with submission attempts and making Fitch play defense, but who know how that dynamic would change if Fitch could use strikes.

It's good to be prepared.

I’m sure he’s prepared to fight off his back, just like I’m sure Koscheck was prepared for a standup fight. Much good may it do him. Based on some desultory googling (honestly, who has the energy to watch all of Shields’ fights?), it looks like of his 10 submission wins, 8 were either guillotines or RNCs. Since I don’t see GSP lunging into guillotines, and Shields will get GSP’s back sometime shortly after the earth crashes into the sun, I’m going to go ahead and say that Shields is not going to finish this one from the bottom.

by proflex on Apr 18, 2011 10:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Sorry to break the bad news.

More specifically, Shields takes GSP’s back shortly after the earth crashes into the sun: i.e., 15 seconds before the end of a round after having been swaddled in the cozy snuggliness of a GSP blanket.

If Shields could win just one round

Maybe that would break GSP mentally and Shields could pull it off. I mean with GSP not losing a round in like 3 1/2 years and then losing one could really get inside his head.

I just wanna really see Shields win this fight

Maybe Im grasping at straws. But the good news with Shields saying exactly what he’s gonna do is Chael did the same thing against Andy and followed thru and backed it up. Did it get in Andy’s head when Sonnen was beating him for 4 rds straight? No, but that’s why AS is the GOAT and GSP’s not. When I see someone tap to strikes or tap before an armbar is fully extended, I think it would.be possible to break them mentally by getting dominated for a full round for the first time in 3 1/2 years.

Just Breed!

by ScoreCardOTN on Apr 18, 2011 1:02 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

So that's all you have to do to beat the P4P top 2 in MMA, win one round?

If he quites because he lost one round, ONE ROUND, then he can throw himself in front of a bus. GSP may not like taking a beating, and may not like the sensation of a perfectly locked armbar, but to think he would quit for losing one round…
Even though, taking one round to GSP, that’s a fuckin task.

people confuse GSP's abilities

ok, he doesn’t have the BEST striking, or whatever.

The point is GSP is incredible in bringing all his strengths together, he uses all aspects of the game and all his strengths.

That is way better than being proficient in one or two abilities, he is a true mixed martial artist.

by elmojo on Apr 18, 2011 1:55 PM EDT reply actions

That CAN'T be Shield's strategy

Seriously. He thinks that if GSP has top position that he won’t stand up? Really? His plan is for GSP to do the exact thing that everyone in the world, including GSP, knows he shouldn’t do?

Therefore, I account this misinformation. Shields probably won’t win, but he’s not a complete fuckwit, therefore he has some other plan.
