UFC 132: Tito Ortiz Feels He Matches up Well With Ryan Bader

Former UFC light heavyweight champ Tito Ortiz will face up and comer Ryan Bader at UFC 132 in July. Ortiz has been hampered in recent years by a long string of back injuries. He gives his thoughts on the fight and has some advice for fighters who want to avoid ending up like UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes:
"I think (Ryan Bader and I) match up really really well. He only has one loss on his record. He's a tough kid, really great wrestler; his stand up skills are fairly decent. His ground game is ok. I think I have my (work) cut out for me. I have to be in great shape and I have to press the pace."

"I haven't had a win since 2006. But people have to understand, watch all the fights I have lost. I lost them by a little bit. I fought Forrest Griffin the second time, I thought I beat him two rounds to one. When I fought Rashad (Evans), I thought I beat him, but they took a point away, made it a draw, I didn't think I grabbed the fence. I’m competing against the top guys of the world, each and every time. There's never no gimmies and I want to thank Dana and Joe Silva who give me these matches to show I'm still competing against the top guys in the world."

(About his past contract disputes) "People have to understand, I have to take care of my family. I make the difference that other fighters are afraid to do. (MMA) is a business. If you think of it as just fighting, you're going to be lost and forgotten about like a Matt Hughes. You have to become a role model and an inspiration to a lot of these fighters, knowing what to do, as a business man."

Hmm.

If the fight stays standing, sure. Who’s the better wrestler between the two? Bader, right?

Bader has a better wrestling pedigree, although it’s a little difficult to ascertain his ability to apply his wrestling to MMA because a) he prefers to standnbang b) he does a lot of takedown fakes. His takedown fakes usually involve him ducking low, throwing a powerful shot over the top and then clinching up – it’s hard to tell which takedown attempts he’s going 100% on.

Based on his FightMetric stats, he’s also only faced only one opponent who has tried to take him down (Jon Jones). Jon Jones took him down two of two times, and finished him. So, as far as his UFC record goes, Ryan Bader has never successfully defended a takedown!

Tito might edge out the first round.

He looked great in the 1’st 5 minutes against Forrest and Hamill.

This entire statement is ridiculous, but the part about Hughes was the best. Tito the role model, the inspiration!

Matt Hughes had to be known to be forgotten

Tito Ortiz was at one point the most recognizable face of the UFC outside Chuck Liddell, he was getting cameos in movies, he’s been on the Celebrity Apprentice…

A “role model” might be stretching it, but him and Matt Hughes had some pretty similar success and experiences in the UFC, but Tito was known outside it whereas Matt Hughes wasn’t.

by Hashmo on Apr 18, 2011 12:12 AM EDT up reply actions

He still must be bitter about Hughes hanging with and getting the best of him during their grappling matches in the middle east. That an how Dana loves Matt for being a company man and how Tito, though dominate during roughly the same period is Dana’s whipping boy. No mirrors in the Ortiz household.

Breaking News!

Tito Ortiz tripped on a bar of soap coming out of his bath tube and re opened his cut above his eye and gave himself yet another injury that forces him out of the fight. He is to be replaced by again Phil Davis. I can see it now. .

Jules: Normally, both your asses would be dead as fucking fried chicken, but you happen to pull this shit while I'm in a transitional period so I don't wanna kill you, I wanna help you. But I can't give you this case, it don't belong to me. Besides, I've already been through too much shit this morning over this case to hand it over to your dumb ass.

I honestly feel like that should be each of their next fights.Bader needs to fight another top ten and Davis is number 8 i think right now, should be a good fight, maybe i can see some of Davis’s so called striking.

I really don't think

that the UFC would do that to one of their precious TUF winners like Bader. 30-27 Davis.

I just realized

I never really thought about his age, but wow yeah Tito Ortiz is 36 years old now.

As far as the Matt Hughes comparison, well, I think Tito made a bigger cultural impact than Matt, but he won’t be a timeless icon of the sport like, say, Chuck Liddell. Matt Hughes, though, will be remembered as one of the most skilled and dominant welterweights of all time, as well as demonstrating a near perfect blend of wrestling and jiu-jitsu.

I always felt hat Tito did a lot of good in locking horns with Dana over pay, though.

by Pyrgz Krum on Apr 18, 2011 12:13 AM EDT reply actions

Agreed on the pay disputes, certainly helped a few fighters get a few more Zuffa $$.

Whats a guy with a bad back who has intentions of a return to the octagon doing racing cars? oh wait, it’s Tito.

LOL at the Matt Hughes comment though. Hughes is the only guy I dislike more then Tito.

by AusEagle on Apr 18, 2011 12:37 AM EDT reply actions

Oh Tito

It is true though that despite his loss record, he has only been fighting solid-to-top guys when they were still top guys. Tito’s striking looked decent against Hamill for a round or two, but his gas tank looks to be gone as compared to back then, and I don’t think his takedowns are as powerful as they used to be. Despite it all, I am interested in this fight, and as much as many MMA fans dislike Tito Ortiz, I generally still cheer for him. It’s probably due to nostalgia really.

A lot of this is quite true. Tito, for the most part, was noticeably the better fighter against Rashad. Though the draw was maybe justified, Rashad acted like he won the lottery when he heard the announcement, Tito looked like he’d been robbed, and he sort of was.
And Tito gets nothing but big fights, which he doesn’t really need to do. Look at Matt Hughes, who is only taking winnable fights for big pay these days.
I was going to say the same about Randy Couture, but his fight against Machida is certainly going to be a challenge for him.
FWIW, I can’t stand Tito Ortiz…

all the whining

about how close all your losses have been? hard to be a fan of this guy when he harps on stuff like that. good fighters win fights and you are no longer relevant, now go crash that car.
