Anderson Silva Says He Would Never Fight Jon Jones
On fighting Jones:Anderson Silva not wanting to fight Jon Jones is good news and Brent Brookhouse breaks down why:
"No chance, he’s in a different weight class, we are friends and we won’t fight each other."
On fighting GSP:
"There is a chance there, everything will depend on our results. It depends on him winning at UFC 129 and me winning in August (against Yushin Okami). And from there, who knows, this fight could take place."
"We, as fans, shouldn't be so desperate to see fighters take fights that are bad for them. There's a difference between wanting to see fighters challenged and wanting to see fighters lose. Luckily Anderson doesn't appear interested in going up to light heavyweight to capture the title. We're going to see plenty of tremendous Jon Jones moments in the coming years, we don't need him hurting the legacy of Anderson Silva mixed in."

I think has less to do with them being friends
and more that Jones is a LHW and Anderson isn’t doing that anymore, or so he’s been saying of late.

I'll be the lonely guy in the corner thinking AS just doesn't want to fight anyone at LHW because of his teammates :p

not always will those who dumps on you be your enemies
and not always will those who take you out of shit be your friends
that don’t make any kind of sense, Anderson accepted a rematch wit Sonnen, that is, until he got caught cheating…

No, I am with you
As I said in the thread this morning about the premiere invitation:
Not to mention the whole "no interest in the LHW title" since Machida and Lil Nog are there.
I don’t see them ever fighting, and I for one prefer it that way. I don’t think Anderson fears any fighter, from Aldo to Overeem to anyone else.

i beg to differ american ronin
anderson doesn’t want to fight jones b/c he’s afraid he’d get his ass kicked. if sonnen could handle him the way he did, then anderson wants no part of what of jones has to bring.
the friends thing is ridiculous and he is just being a pussy, plain and simple. why is it ok to fight george when he is also in a different weight class but it’s not ok for jones?? it’s crap b/c andy believes he can beat george or stand a better chance b/c of the size difference in his favor. w/ jones, there are no advantages for him so he uses this bs excuse.
i officially renounce any respect i had left for him as a fighter; i previously have lost respect for him as a person b/c of all his bullshit tactics and excuses and games in the past but now i don’t even care to see him fight. he doesn’t deserve it anymore.
and i disagree w/ brent brookhouse. why the hell shouldn’t we want to see anderson’s legacy “mixed up” w/ a jones fight?? b/c most likely he’d lose? again, i think fighting should be about wanting to challenge yourself to see how great you can be and that means taking on some hard challenges and risks where you very well may lose. if he did fight jones and lost, i wouldn’t think any less of him or his skills, but NOT fighting him b/c of the fear of the risk does change my opinion.
i think this of all fighters. once they reach a certain pinnacle why not move on to bigger and harder challengers where if you conquer the challenge you are considered perhaps the greatest ever and if lose, you’re still considered one of the greats simply b/c of your accomplishments and character in the effort to test your skill.

Anderson has said for literally years, before Jones ever even got into the UFC, that he would would never challenge for the LHW title because of Machida. He has never deviated in the slightest from this throughout that time, even after Rua beat Lyoto.
Prior to Jones’ ascension I argued that Anderson and Machida should switch dance partners – Anderson was better equipped to handle Shogun, and Machida was better suited to fight Sonnen.
i think this of all fighters. once they reach a certain pinnacle why not move on to bigger and harder challengers where if you conquer the challenge you are considered perhaps the greatest ever and if lose, you’re still considered one of the greats simply b/c of your accomplishments and character in the effort to test your skill.
Because at the end of the day, these are business decisions, not legacy decision for almost all fighters. As for the GSP angle, that was usually contingent on GSP coming to Anderson’s house to fight (185), but the fact of the matter is that even at a CW (where I would like to see it) GSP/Anderson would likely do record-breaking PPV numbers (and thus benefit Anderson greatly), whereas a fight with the largely unknown Jones would be fortunate to draw half of that.
I think Jones would likely wreck Anderson, and Anderson knows he is a bit past his prime, but I don’t think that plays into his decision at all based on the last several years of comments about the LHW title.

by The American Ronin on Apr 17, 2011 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions
I think you r still missing the mark
First, I think Anderson’s assertion about the LHW title is now moot. Lyoto is not anywhere near challenging for the belt at this point, & as much as he can “climb” back up even if he defeats Randy, it’s so far removed that it’s not a credible reason. Somehow or another, they could work around it if Lyoto was able to work back to a title shot even if non-title fight, but again, that in and of itself is NO way why he is refusing to fight Jones.
Secondly, and even more interestingly, is a quote made by Andy’s manager, Ed Soares, just a few days after this article and our posts. Soares stated,
“Anderson always wants to fight the best, and fight the best potential opponents that’s going to cement his legacy in this sport.”
This was said among many other things, along w/ that Anderson is the best in the sport and all of his defenses, etc. This goes exactly against your argument in my opinion or at least supports what I believe to be the real true case: that Anderson does think he would get wrecked by Jones and does NOT want to fight him simply b/c it would mess up his legacy.
As much as I dislike Silva, I can’t deny his extraordinary fighting skills and ability, which I think he has wasted on so many of these bullshit title defenses. While he has defended obviously, I think his level of competition has been less than stellar on many occasions. I also think that he is NOT past his prime. While he may be starting on the decline, if he treated the sport and his abilities like GSP did, he could be in just as good as shape and sharp as anyone.
I think Anderson could actually be the best if he would just treat the sport and himself w/ respect and not pull all the crap he has done in many of his fights. He could do what Randy is doing to some degree, in terms of being able to fight and win against people despite his age. In fact, he has so many weapons in his arsenal and if he would treat fighting like Randy does, or GSP or simply as I have described, as someone who is looking for a challenge and who is looking to test themself, then he could in fact challenge Jones and win decisively.
For all of Jones’ talents, I think Anderson could match him if he would only try (and w/ working on wrestling defense of course). I think he’s wasted his career either b/c of the bullshit Ed has put in his head or from his own creation. I think the PPV would be do just as well also against GSP, particularly if he beat him and then would be even crazier b/c he is theoretically, the one man right now that seems to stand out as someone who could challenge Jones.
Plain and simple, Anderson changes his mind more than we change our underwear and seems to do things based on what suits his whim at the time. He was looking at 205 and wanted to stay there and face more people then suddenly it changed to staying at 185. Ed Soares and Anderson himself are going to do whatever they can and take the easiest route they can to “cement” his legacy and try and convince people he is the greatest ever. Well no amount of stats or fighting challenger’s almost not worthy of the challenge will convince me that he is nothing more than an incredible athlete who is running away from true greatness.

Snowdens recap after the fight:
0:00-1:00 The fighters circle for ten seconds. Anderson pawing at the air, getting his distance. Jones takedown 15 second in. Jones mixing up punches and elbows from guard. His size seems to be too much for Anderson as he passes to side control. Jon Jones is laying the ground and pound onto Silva.
1:00-2:00 Jones continuing with the ground and pound. Silva can’t get back up. Big elbow hits Anderson and Rosenthal steps in to stop it.
3:00-4:00 Jones stands and takes a bow with a blank face. Walks around Octogon before unleashing a primal roar.

Don't really understand what the big deal here is
When was the last time Silva made any mention of wanting to go back to LHW. Everything I’ve heard (both before and after Jones/Shogun) was that he wanted to finish his career at MW. Everything else has been idle speculation from fans and a lil bit from Dana
Conducting an experiment on knocking people out in particular ways would be unethical.
Anderson also said he was going to fight at 185 for the rest of his career, so I don’t really see the issue with his statement.
GSP Should also fight at 170 for the rest of his career.
Superfights are just stupid for business and stupid in general.
I hope Anderson and GSP both stay at 185 and 170 respectively and Jon Jones stays at 205 and all 3 dominate their divisions until they retire. I don’t really need to see one of them get destroyed by another to be appeased.
It's just a world, it's just a life.
Don't do the "friends" thing.
Be real Anderson, I’m ok with you not wanting to fight a dude who would walk into the Octagon at 230. And who is pretty good at that thing you’re not so good at.

I feel as weird defending Anderson over Jones as I used to defending Fedor, but Anderson has maintained for years that he would never fight for the title at LHW because of Machida and Lil Nog…this shouldn’t be news to anyone who has followed MMA for more than a few minutes…

I don't know if I'd call it fear.
Yes, Anderson would almost certainly get dominated. But with the weight and size difference, it’s like he might as well fight Cain. I don’t think Anderson would be scared, but it wouldn’t prove anything to have him fight either man. I’d be happy with him standing on “I don’t have anything to prove.”
the way I see it
Anderson likes to appear humble, he tries so hard that it becomes obvious he’s just doing it for the camera’s, IMO he would never say I have nothing to prove, he will always try to give a reason as to why he would not do something IMO.
not always will those who dumps on you be your enemies
and not always will those who take you out of shit be your friends
I was kidding. When he’ll be offered this fight and declines it, I’ll be fine with speculating, but now, basing speculations on a bunch of interviews is silly. As I said somwhere else, not so long ago Rashad and Jones were friends.

Well I doubt Jon Jones would have an issue fighting Silva to begin with
but if he did, there would just have to be rumblings that he “could” lose the title or his job with the UFC and then Jones would be down to fight “another friend”.
As for Anderson, you dont want to fight at LHW again? Fine I dont care but stop this “friend” stuff. Unless I missed something over the last 2 months when they showed Anderson and Jon on a UFC 126 video blog it looked like that was the first time they had ever even spoken a word to each other.
Why be mad that Silva is befriending Jon Jones? The best thing that could ever happen to Jon Jones is...
To have Anderson Silva as a mentor and teacher… Anderson is getting old anyway…
Him and GSP are not cool. He knows Jones idolizes him and besides he has been saying for the longest that he doesn’t want to interfere with Lyoto getting that belt back

“If GSP comes up in weight, I will fight him. I, however, am not going to fight Jon Jones because, much like Chandella Danny Glover, I’m gettin’ too old for this shit.”
He’s saying what he’s doing. Double standards would have been saying he wasn’t going to move up to LHW and then calling GSP out for not fighting him.

He also has mentioned his willingness to come down to fight GSP
which isn’t an option for Jones.
The other big factor in this, is that Jones-Silva at this point is a super fight that mainly appeals to super fans, since Jones hasn’t seemed to really catch on yet (though he’s edging in that direction). GSP-Silva is guaranteed PPV blowout that will appeal to everyone who’s ever thought about MMA. Silva’s got a limited number of fights left, and that would be a blockbuster.

Sure, there’s always the puncher’s chance, but Jones beats almost anyone out there 8 out of 10 times minimum. The fighters — the people who step in the Octagon for a living — they get it.

That's not a test of skill
Most fighters aren’t going to find out how good they are by getting in the cage with Jones. All they’re going to find out is that they’re hopeless overmatched athletically. It would be like a high school swimmer getting in the pool in the Phelps. There’s no learning experience there. There’s no gauging of skill there. There’s simply being dominated.

All the fighters thought Mir would beat Carwin. All the fighters thought Couture would beat Lesnar. All the fighters thought GSP would beat Serra at UFC 69. Just because they’re fighters doesn’t make their opinion infallible.

Bad analogy
Those were fighters estimating the results of fights between two other people. I’m talking about fighters gauging themselves vs Jones and realizing they come up very short.

Which is why Rashad isn't going to be fighting Jones
and did that full length interview on MMA Live about how he “doesn’t measure up” to the INCREDIBLE INDOMITABLE JONES WHO SHALL NEVER BE DEFEATED (hamill excluded nitpickers) AND WILL REIGN OVER THE DIVISION UNTIL HE ASCENDS INTO THE HEAVENS IN A FLAMING CHARIOT AND DECLARES THAT HE IS THE MESSIAH THE PROPHETS DIDST SPEAK OF, AND LO HE WILL RULE OVER THE OCTAGON WITH A MIGHTY FIST WITH LORD DANA AT HIS RIGHT HAND AND GREG JACKSON UPON HIS LEFT.
And it will be good.

What a BIZARRE line of reasoning
This logic, I think, is basically saying that because Jones is very good that fighting him is pointless.
I mean, the argument that Silva (or anyone) shouldn’t fight Jones because Jones will probably win is just goofy. By that reasoning, no one should fight GSP or Silva, either, right? What chance does Okami have! What chance does Shields have! They might as well NOT GET IN THE CAGE because it won’t be a demonstration of skill because the odds are against them!

Remember, I'm talking about from the fighter's point of view
Most fighters will take fights in which they think they’re not quite as good as the other guy but still have a shot of winning if they do things right. Very few fighters will take a fight that they know they’re not close in athleticism and skill. I am not going to race Phelps in the pool. I am a pretty good swimmer. Won a lot of events in swim meets when I was a kid. But my chances of beating Phelps are 2 out of 1000000: if he tries to lose or if he suffers a medical condition like a heart attack or stroke in the water while we’re swimming (and even then, he beats me 8 out of 10).

He's scared of Jones.
Before it was Lyota Machida. That makes sense. Now its Jones. Silva is trying to become friends with him so he won’t have to fight him lol.
Yeah they are “so close” that he invites him to a show over twitter? Lol.
I'd change my name to Mr. Carrano.

When/If Jones runs out of LHW fighters
Have him move up to heavyweight. We all know that’s where he’ll get the best challenge. I think Dana wanted the Jones/Silva fight as a kind of fuck you to Silva re: their relationship.

will that's what brent thinks
but we all want to see him fight jones. it’ll probably not happen anyway. silva will be too old to provide any kind of challenge for jones if they ever lock gloves.
Anderson seems scared
When he invited bones to movie my first thought was keep your enemies closer type of thing. But now it seems silva trying to make a friendship with him just to avoid this fight. Now instead of Anderson scared it’s, oh Anderson is so respectfully. Let’s see if bones puts him on blast like he did shad.

Cool, Anderson ducks Jones and everyone is cool with it.
GSP ducks Anderson and everyone shits on him. Love the hypocrisy.
Wait...
who shit on GSP? everyone was saying how smart he is for wanting to stay at WW and be dominant, etc. Anderson doesn’t want to fight someone half his age and twice his size right before he retires and he’s a “coward.” are you kidding me bro?!?!
we're not kidding you bro?!?!?!
seriously, if you haven’t encountered comments GSP-shitting here on BE, read some more.
So let me get this straight: the WWE has gone from the powerful "Austin 3:16" to the dominant and iconic "Can you smell what the Rock is cooking?" all the way to... (cue baby voice) "You can't see me." Oh, believe me, we all can see you. A blind-folded, sleeping, stuck in the basement, Stevie Wonder can see your monkey ass. - The Rock
As far as I know, A. Silva is 6’2’’ and walks around at about 230…
And Rumble “walks around” north of 230…so-called walking around weight means nothing…

I get not wanting to throw them together quickly or anything, they both have fights in their weight classes to worry about. I doubt Silva and Jones are “close friends”.
But the idea that “we don’t need Jones ruining Silva’s legacy” is just wrong. Fighters fight, once they start worrying about protecting their records and picking and choosing who to fight — they might as well just go ahead and retire.
To quote someone from another forum
Well, there is some logic to this. Anderson is an elite level striker so most of his friends are elite strikers. They like go out together and strike stuff elitely and maybe dance sometimes. And guys you can’t like, ask him to fight his friends, thats like so unfair and stuff.
What a hypocrite, either way.
Like I said, the fight doesn’t interest me, but the hypocrisy is funny.
And then God created Saturn ... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.

I've been posting since the Shogun fight that there's noway Silva accepts
He’s obviously afraid. There is no other reason.
However, I see no reason to dog on Silva considering he’s made it clear for a while that he didnt wanna go up. Also he has done it in the past and absolutely f’d Forrest.
Also I wanna hear similar outrage towards GSP who himself has not committed to moving up in weight.
Hilariously enought it looks like Nick Diaz might be the closest thing we get to an Anderson Silva “superfight”.
To accept, first he would have to be offered a fight.
All the shit said in the interviews doesn’t matter.
Last time I heard Jones wouldn’t fight Evans because they’re friends and now they are fighting on twitter like little girls.

Didn´t Chael say...
that everyone who doesn´t want to fight JJ in the 205 should turn their gloves in?
Kinda seems to me that AS is trying to irritate Chael :p
"This is for me, I mean right now, I mean this year.. I mean I probably haven´t been my best.. -- That wasn´t a fair fight. I just fought. I got kicked on the leg. I go out there, what´s the guy try to do? Kick me around my leg. That´s not a fair fight man! My other fight before that.. none of these have been fair!
I´ve got people out there to get me.." -Nick Diaz
maybe, just maybe, silva is saying that he is through jumping weight classes, but that if GSP decides to move up to his weight class then he would gladly fight him. it’s annoying how all of the internet tough guys first and only assumption is that silva is afraid to fight. the guy fights for money inside of a cage. why would you assume that suddenly he’s afraid to fight? ridiculous.
Spider Ailva isnt afraid of any fighter
He’s called out mir, lesnar, and fedor. Jones is just a real likable person that he doesn’t want to kick in the face.
i wouldnt fight Jon Jones either
by alibabarouge on Apr 16, 2011 11:22 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
except
the first thing he said was he is a different weight class I think he is worried about not having both a size and skill advantage on jones one or the other is ok. silva is bigger then gsp its ok hes bigger then me not cool. Didnt he say at one point he would fight at heavyweight? I should also state that i dislike anderson silva, although i was impressed by his ko of belfort
But its OK for GSP to take it on the chin?
This is some bizarre reasoning, Anderson lower than 185 wouldnt be competitive – same with GSP above 170.
Anderson & Jones at 205, now thats a fight
