Forrest Griffin vs. Shogun Rua Rematch Official for UFC: Rio

Photo

Mauricio "Shogun" Rua originally came to the UFC in 2007 as the #1 light heavyweight in the world. He'd been Pride's rising star in the division since 2005 when he won their Middleweight (205lbs) Tournament by beating Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, Alistair Overeem and Ricardo Arona. No one expected The Ultimate Fighter winner Forrest Griffin to have much of a chance against Shogun, but Forrest shocked the world by finishing Rua at UFC 76 and then going on to win the UFC title. Since then their individual fortunes have risen and fallen with both winning and quickly losing the championship belt. Now they meet again according to MMA Fighting:
Early Friday morning, UFC president Dana White confirmed the bout to MMA Fighting.
Forrest Griffin (18-6) [Num. 6]
Win Rich Franklin - Decision (Unanimous) UFC 126
Win Tito Ortiz - Decision (Split) UFC 106
Loss Anderson Silva - KO (Punch) UFC 101
Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (19-5) [Num. 2]
Loss Jon Jones - TKO (Punches and Knees) UFC 128
Win Lyoto Machida - KO (Punches) UFC 113
Loss Lyoto Machida - Decision (Unanimous) UFC 104
Aug 27th, live on Pay-per-view from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil:
Anderson Silva vs. Yushin Okami
Mauricio Rua vs. Forrest Griffin

Agreed,

I really like this rematch. Hopefully Shogun’s knee/ overall shape is better for this fight, he always seems to take a while to recover from knee surgery.

It's been reported numerous times

He desperately wants on this card. I think he called out Wandy for it before his bout was scheduled with Leben.

I do hope he gets on it…this is a once in a lifetime opprotunity for Brazilian stars past and present (Rocye Gracie still getting a fight?) and Vitor being left out would be a travesty.

Don't let my support confuse you, I am in fact a fan of the Giants.

Vitor\Anybody

It would be a crime for Belfort not to make it on this card.

Adding Vitor/Belcher would make this the best card of the year.

I agree

Somebody exciting, tough and willing & able to fight. If not Belcher, maybe Bisping would do it (or if the UFC would), but Leben would be a decent choice too, or even Sexyama. Somebody with a decent name and a non-boring game.

Yes

He announced via twitter at the very end of January that he was back and was asking fans (via Twitter) to tell UFC President Dana White and UFC Matchmaker Joe Silva who they wanted him to fight, but stipulated that he only wants "big names"

I can't

Think of a shittier thing to do to a guy who almost lost his eyesight than to throw him in the cage, after a crazy long layoff, against Vitor Belfort in Brazil… unless is was against Anderson.
The UFC can find a better option for both guys.

I’m a Belcher fan but I think this is a case of saving a fighter from themselves. Let him get his feet wet/timing back against a more suitable opponent and then let him chase the big fights.

That was a scary injury.

This time, there is no long layoff for Shogun or any known injuries that he has to deal with. Shogun should be in peak condition for this fight, whatever that may be these days with his surgeries, but there should have no excuses for him this time around. Glad to see this matchup happen.

This is great for the fans and great for the card. It has that element of unfinished business between the two. Everyone expected Shogun to destroy Forrest and it didn’t quite work out that way. Honestly, when I think about it, no one really at light heavyweight. Besides the transitions that Jon Jones has from striking to wrestling, I don’t find much excitement in the light heavyweight division. Right now, I much prefer to watch light heavyweight boxers (that’s because Bernard Hopkins is hilarious).

In a 3-round fight...

Griffin could conceivably take it to the ground every round and out-size and out-strength Shogun to a decision like in the Franklin fight. I think Griffin’s bjj is also good enough to avoid getting submitted. Shogun’s gotta come out swinging every round, especially with the noted absence of knock-power on his opponent’s part

Bad matchup for Shogun. Truly giving him a test after his tough loss to Jones. Hopefully he will be motivated to train hard for this one. Not only to revenge his loss to Griffin, but to climb back to the belt. If Shogun and Rampage both win their fights I could see a fight for the number one contender spot somewhere by the end of the year. Woo hoo.

For everyone thats counting shogun out of this fight, your ridiculous. I know he lost to Jones but didnt you see him beat Machida twice. He is a world class striker that y lost his first fight standing up, everyone else he’s beat standing up and lets face it, Forrest is not an elite striker by any means. Shogun wins this easily by all kinds of strikes, watch and see.

Everyone knows also that shogun was no where near 100% against Griffin and was gassed badly. He will destroy Griffin as bad as Silva did.

This all depends which Shogun shows up...

He looked bad and tired against Forrest the first time.
He looked bad and tired against Coleman in their rematch — and Coleman was like 65 years old.
He looked good against Chuck, but the fight ended fast (which is a good thing).
He looked good — and IN SHAPE — in both fights against Machida.
He looked bad and weak and tired against Jones.

If he’s not in shape, Forrest will take him down and grind him like he did to Rich Franklin.

Also, Forrest did a great job controlling distance in the first fight, and was able to take Shogun down easily and multiple times. I see this as essentially the first fight over again with Forrest controlling distance early and nailing takedowns and grinding in rounds 2 and 3.

Agreed, but then there’s the fact that a bummed knee means no cardio or wrestling training… or very little of it.

Hope he’s recovered to full form for this fight.

I think it is time to give up on Shogun being able to consistently show up in shape.

I think we’ll occasionally get to see it (like in the Machida fights) and he’ll look like a world-beater when it happens, but those years of Chute Boxe training took a heavy toll on the Rua boys. Both of them are physically breaking down at an age when they should be in their primes.

We have all seen what a recking machine shogun was over in PRIDE…but judging soley on his UFC career…how the heck did he get a title shot?
1st fight- lost to forrest griffin, who was a MASSIVE underdog

2nd fight- Barely beat a 45 year old mark coleman who hadnt fought in over 2 years. the tko was due to exhaustion just as much as it was to shoguns tired punches

3rd fight- Knockes out chuck Liddell. impressive showing, but didnt they just give rashad a title shot for doing the very same thing to chuck in his last fight?
his name value aside, he shouldnt have gotten a title shot after a record like that.

I guess it had to happen, for all of the Shogun lovers, but I’m not really terribly interested.

sweet fight. I wonder if the "forrest has no chance’ bandwagon will get as big as it did last time.

I hope Shogun smashes him but I fear Forrest is just too big for him.

Sweet, now I just hope Royce DOES NOT fight on this card...

I do not want to see him fight again, especially after how he got owned by Hughes. Well I’d watch him figh again, but I just don’t want to waste a main card fight on him.

Royce has to fight a burnt out has-been for me to be happy.

Maybe a Sakuraba, but Sakuraba could probably still wax him with ease. Someone from way back in the day.
