Canadian Promotion to Implement Pride Rules

The good ol' days. Photo by Stephen Martinez for Sherdog.com.

There is a lot to miss about Pride. The pageantry. The stars. The giant checks. The Yakuza influence. A bare-assed Nobuhiko Takada banging on a giant drum.

For many, however, the biggest loss in Pride's demise was the ruleset: knees and soccer kicks to the head allowed, elbows not allowed. Pasqualino Santoro and his Colosseo Championship Fighting plan to bring those rules over to North America on July 23rd. MMA Junkie reports:

Now, more than a year later, Colosseo is planning another event for July 23 that will employ mostly American talent.

Its promoter, Pasqualino Santoro, intends to up the action by using the ruleset of another Japanese promotion, the now-defunct PRIDE Fighting Championships. The soccer kicks and stomps used in PRIDE will stay at Santoro's event, dubbed "Colosseo Championship Fighting 6: Bushido."

The article notes that fighters such as Marius Zaromskis, Shane Nelson, James Irvin, and Rob Emerson are in negotiations for the event.

The article also indicates that the event will be sanction by the International Combative Sports Association, which is not affiliated with the Association of Boxing Commissions. A Google search for the organization brings up this Angelfire-looking website and the MMA Junkie article when searching for the exact phrase.

I’m a fan of the ruleset but I’m talking about public sentiment and policy. Isn’t MMA still newly sanctioned in some provinces?

Also, do any smaller promotions allow stomps and soccer kicks in the states? The reservations are supposedly unregulated.

… but what an awesome way to end a career.

by M.Sphinx on Apr 13, 2011 7:24 PM EDT up reply actions

He’d have been DQ’d, fired from the UFC for what amounts to a cheap shot, and at this stage in his career it would’ve forced his retirement.

But since we’re dealing with a fictional scenario, we’ll never know.

by M.Sphinx on Apr 13, 2011 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions

He would have served a 6 month suspension.

by Rufford on Apr 13, 2011 7:36 PM EDT up reply actions

He probably would have just been DQed and that would have been it

If Bisping was able to continue (but come on this is Bisping) he would have simply been docked a point.

Agreed. He’d get DQ’d and apoligize, don’t see anything more coming out of it. Clearly heat of the moment type thing, it’s not like he was going to attack him after the bell or continually stomp his face while the ref was trying to pull him off.

I particularly enjoyed the part of the article where Santoro claimed he doesn’t watch the the UFC because the unified rules are ‘boring’, yet all but one of the guys mentioned as possible fighters are UFC veterans who have spent their entire careers fighting under the unified rules.

How did Santoro pick those guys if he has never seen them fight?

But I think this guy is an attention seeking idiot doing a “look at me” me dance to generate attention he pulled the same bullshit a year ago with DREAM’s ruleset and honestly I don’t think he gives two shits either way about the sport (I doubt any decent AC will licence him again after this). I’m glad than any fighter competing at this ridiculous event will be suspended and I hope this money grabbing idiot fails. There are many reasons the ACB insists on the unified rules this is a sport remember not a barfight.

Looks like they're based in Edmonton

If this is the case, being sanctioned by an international commission isn’t legal. Promotions must be sanctioned by provincial commissions (which can be delegated to municipalities).

I’m so psyched for this. I assume they’re also holding it in a ring? Either way, it should be a really nice change from the watered down Unified Rules, and swing in the right direction back towards real mixed martial arts.

To be fair,

they drew them into videotaped backstage fights, cut out right in the middle of the fight, and come back in with a triangle choke suddenly applied to the opponent until they passed out.

I want it all. I want MMA to be as close to real unarmed combat as possible, with just the obvious danger zones like groin shots and eyegouging to be banned. So I would prefer Pride rules + elbows.

But I can sort of understand why stomps and maybe soccer kicks are banned, I still miss them though. However, knees to the head of grounded opponent is severely lacking in the Unified Rules, and there’s really no good reason why they shouldn’t be allowed. Oh and also upkicks should ALWAYS be allowed, even if your opoonent is on both knees. That rule is just stupid as it is now.
