Note, quick history on boxing judges

Kampmann’s lost to Sanchez can be attributed to failure to learn from history.

There are a number of fights in boxing history where the fighter who outpointed his opponent lost. The ones that I clearly remember are

  • Pernell Whitaker(L) versus OScar De La Hoya(W)
  • Oscar De La Hoya(L) versus Tito Trinidad(W).

In both fights the loser outpointed and outboxed their opponents. Unfortunately the winner was percieved as the aggressor and the fighter throwing more power punches.

(((( ))))) ((((( )))))
End Note: the Shields-Kampmann fight was close, there for he was not robbed of the victory.

I tend to be biased towards strikers . . . exciting strikers.

Sweet P. Pernell Whitaker, a guy who could win rounds without throwing a single punch lol. Was definitely robbed in that fight, i remember that.

As for Shields v. Kampmann their was no robbery in that fight at all, jake took his back and was looking for a finish. We was clearly lost that fight. But the Diego fight was a completely diff story, now that was a clear adult robbery.

HOnestly I don't know how the decision went to Diego Sanchez.

But attempting to the devils advocate or Mr. Blind Man State Commission judge . . . he did appear to be very aggressive with his 50 take down attempts, he scored 1 takedown and he made Kampmann wobble in the 3rd round. And let’s not forget how many times he blocked Kampmann’s jabs with his face.

Sanchez looked like he was swinging at the air often.

I tend to be biased towards strikers . . . exciting strikers.

Judges like things that look big and dramatic.

Takedowns, wild haymakers, etc all score more than crisp, precision strikes.

As for this matchup, I favor Kampmann, especially if he mixes up some takedowns with his strikes. As long as Martin can keep himself out of exchanges with his back on the fence, he should take this.

a ok fight but....

What a weak card and headliner if this is the main event. This card needs a big name fight maybe 2 added just to save face.

Doubt it.

Maybe for Howard but not Kampmann.

Yep. I have a feeling this is going to be an awful, awful fight. Will be interesting to see if Kongo can win a decision after losing 1 or 2 points.

Think Howard might take it.

Kampmann excels at counter-grappling, but his striking has a lot of holes that I see Howard exploiting.

what I like about Howard

is that he pushes forward. Even against a beast like Alves. Kamp, if given enough pressure can and will crumble, no matter how decent his jab is.

by Rucker on Apr 13, 2011 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions

He's awful at keeping guys off of him.

Howard’s going to pressure him and is decidedly more powerful on the feet than Sanchez. If he ends up a big underdog I’ll probably put some money on him.

my guess is howard will be a pretty steep underdog. he really hasn’t won over a lot of people yet, and kampmann is still perceived as a fringe upper level guy. think i’ll plunk a few dollars down, as well.

by POW on Apr 13, 2011 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Kampmann should be 18-4 without a doubt, and arguable 19-3.

As long as he stays technical and doesnt brawl with Howard AND doesnt leave it to the whim of the judges, Kampmann all day.

by Cocytus on Apr 13, 2011 3:38 PM EDT reply actions

That’s where I think Ron Frazier and Kampmann go wrong. Staying technical has not worked for him, the proof is in the judges decision. If Kampmann stays technical and Howard is very aggressive, the possibility of another controversial loss can easily occur.

Being technical doesn’t exclude going in for the kill. I definitely think he needs to be more aggressive when the opportunity presents itself to end the match. By being technical I meant not fighting sloppy/brawling because against Howard I think he’ll get caught and hurt if he does.

by Cocytus on Apr 13, 2011 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I still want to see Doomsday vs Rumble. Kinda hoping Howard wins this but I think Kampmann will take it.

This is the worst card in North America that I can remember.

Worse than the TUF 12 Finale. The only card that jumps to mind as being actually worse than this in recent history is UFC 122, the second Germany event. But at least that had a solid headliner. This card flat out sucks right now.

122 was fucking terrible.

Maia/Grove and Hendricks/Story from the TUF 12 finale weren’t bad but the rest was a waste of time. Luckily SF was on the same night.

Exactly. And they are making it really clear to everybody

So between pissing off CBS, flopping on ION, and giving absolute bottom of the barrel fights to Versus, how are they in a good position to negotiate with Spike when the contract is up?

by pdl on Apr 13, 2011 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions

If they put a good card with a proven draw on Versus, they'd do close enough ratings

and be able walk in to a Spike meeting and say “The sports channel gets us sports related advertisers that make our brand more palatable for merchandising, we are guaranteed live broadcasts in HD for the whole US for our sporting events, and they are producing a half hour lead in show as well as a wrap up event afterwards for X amount of events with on-air pitches for upcoming PPVs. They currently have expansion plans and we’re looking to establish a strong relationship with another growing brand.”

It wouldn’t have been that hard. Eat the cost to put Rampage or Penn on a broadcast even, get your ratings, go negotiate. It’s not even about getting a new station, but at least have the leverage to make stop stop fucking tape delaying a live event in the US. Phil Davis was fighting on the west coast and the west coast couldn’t watch it live! That’s not a good broadcast partner, and the UFC isn’t doing a great job of gaining leverage or keeping other options open. I really hope I’m wrong about that too.

And those fighters were awful. So I don’t buy the idea that losing makes you fight more desperately.

for the record, kampmann wasn't "robbed"

He just needs to learn to finish when he has someone in really bad positions, and that being an effective counter-fighter won’t always be reflected on the scorecards.

That said, I’m rooting for my boston boy Howard! He needs to keep it on the feet but I think his striking is on par and if he could go toe to toe with Alves, he can with anyone at WW. War Doomsday!

I see we meet again.

Doom has to make this one a dog fight and drag Kampmann into it. Then he’s just gotta land a big shot. I don’t think he can win a decision here, but with power he may not have to.

Kampmann will dominate him and give him his walking papers.
