UFC Primetime: St. Pierre vs. Shields Live Discussion

Before Georges St. Pierre and Jake Shields meet at UFC 129, UFC Primetime will follow each fighter's training camps for three weeks leading up to the fight. This marks St. Pierre's third time participating on the show, having previously been featured for his UFC 111 bout between Dan Hardy and his UFC 94 superfight with B.J. Penn. One can assume that the show will primarily serve as a promotional tool for Jake Shields, who is unknown to casual UFC fans outside of an uninspired decision victory over Martin Kampmann at UFC 121.

Spike TV will take viewers to the Bay Area of California to see how Shields is honing his patented "American Jiu Jitsu" skills for his title shot, and to Montreal to see how St-Pierre, one of the most beloved athletes in Canada, is preparing for his title defense.

Join us at BloodyElbow.com tonight for part one at midnight ET and share your thoughts as the show unfolds.

yeah I wanted to watch it last night, but me and the gf were in the bed my 9:30. I have to be up by 6:00 for the next couple of weeks so I just said fuck it and went to sleep because I was looking at being up for at least another 2 hours if I wanted to watch it.

As much as I like GSP, kind of tired of seeing him on these shows.

I mean, there’s only so many times I can see him jump those hurdles before getting bored. However, I do realize that they’re doing this to give Jake some much needed exposure, and maybe make him look cooler than he actually is. I mean, they made it look as if Hardy stood a snowball’s chance in hell against GSP last time.

The only reason I would tune in is to see Jake Shield’s highlights. I haven’t really seen any of his fights in full except the Miller one….and well, that other Miller one. And now that I think about it…he was sooooo close to being subbed by Mayhem I really wonder how well he will fare on the ground against GSP?

GSP likes to face opponents where they are best..

Hence wanting to expose Hardy’s world renowned BJJ

just bein an ass.. GSP is actually pretty bad ass at not being afraid of his opponents’ skills, just thought it was kind of funny

by ADAMantium on Apr 14, 2011 12:18 AM EDT reply actions

it was a pretty ridiculous statement

GSP is far from known for jumping into his opponents strengths. I’d say he’s far better at exploiting their weaknesses.

Conducting an experiment on knocking people out in particular ways would be unethical.

by Chris Hall on Apr 14, 2011 12:21 AM EDT up reply actions

He does both a lot of the time. He stood with Alves for a little more then half of that fight (according to Fightmetric) and got the better of him. And he did out strike Hardy in the few moments that fight was on the feet.

But you’re right. He is definitely no stranger to attacking his opponents weakness, and i expect him to do so with Shields.

Good point. I suppose he’s very good at both. But I highly doubt we see him spend a lot of time on the ground with Shields. I predict distance striking mixed with late round takedowns. He’ll take it to the ground, but only when he knows time is limited enough that Shields won’t have enough time to catch him.

Conducting an experiment on knocking people out in particular ways would be unethical.

by Chris Hall on Apr 14, 2011 12:32 AM EDT up reply actions

I’d say that’s pretty accurate as to how it will truly play out. But I’d say we may see a little more takedowns in rounds three through five. He’ll test it out and strategize in between one and two and may even pull it as soon as two but I’m assuming Jake’s cardio will be better than it was against Kampmann so we’ll see.

by ADAMantium on Apr 14, 2011 12:57 AM EDT up reply actions

I'd be slack-jaw shocked...

If GSP put this on the ground. Shields has literally no chance on the feet at distance- he’d be a fool not to keep it there.

I truly don’t think he thought Koscheck, Hardy, and Alves were tough tests. They all had glaring weaknesses that Georges would easily overcome and destroy. They were all dangerous in one area but never had a chance at beating him, especially Hardy and Alves. The last tough test he had was Penn. That was over two years ago. Shields is his toughest test since Penn. By far. Shields isn’t just dangerous, he’s big. He’s bigger than Georges. He’s gonna be extremely tough for anyone.

by FlyByKnight on Apr 14, 2011 5:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed 100%,

Think about how GSP destroyed Hughes, Serra, and Penn consecutively. He RESPECTED those guys, and so he fought urgently, and really beat the piss out of them. Hughes & Serra both finished Georges in the 1’st round, and BJ busted him up in the 1’st round of their fight. So what does St. Pierre do? He takes it to them.

Notice how Fitch, Alves, Hardy, & Koscheck all got dominated, but Georges didn’t have the same kind of urgency. He avoided all risks, and just showed his superiority over them. Hell, he kind of toyed with them, tried out new moves… like they were nothing.

I think with a guy like Shields, he will want to take it to him. Jake always presents a danger of snagging a submission, especially from on top. I also think he would fight that way against a guy like Anderson.

I think Shields has a legitimate shot to pull off the upset in this fight, but not unless he can things things to the mat pretty quickly. His striking “skills” are truly terrible and GSP will make what he did to Koscheck seem like child’s play if the action stays standing very long.

Danaher was so full of shit

He was talking about how GSP always goes after his opponent’s biggest strength when GSP has gone on record saying he intentionally does the opposite.

by Rob Young on Apr 14, 2011 9:09 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

He didn’t say he goes after their biggest strength, he said that he’s won fights in their own domain. There’s a difference. He may not consciously have chosen to do so but he has ended fights in other fighter’s best domain.

^This is what Danaher was talking about but I’m trying to figure out which fights he did so…he dominated Fitch all over, he took Alves down at will, he did the same to Hardy, jabbed Kos to death, and before that he crushed BJ from top control and brutalized Serra with knees. Which of those is the fighter’s domain? The only one close would be BJ from bottom even though he’s never subbed any1 from bottom in MMA, and perhaps Serra from bottom?

Weird quote from Danaher.

by OhhhGLS on Apr 14, 2011 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions

First of all, how dare you.

Secondly, He wrestled with Trigg and Hughes, took BJ down, and stood (about half the time) with Alves. I agree that what’s marked GSP’s success is the fact that he’s good everywhere, so he has the ability to bring it wherever his opponent sucks, but he has beaten many of his opponents at their own game.

but he has beaten many of his opponents at their own game.

But almost without exception, when he has done this, it is after working them over and wearing them down where he had the greatest advantage.
