Greg Jackson: Rashad Evans Has the Tools to Beat Jon Jones

Photo

Rashad Evans has made no secret of his hurt feelings, frustration and anger that UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones, his former teammate at Greg Jackson's MMA, agreed to a fight between the two. Evans has not limited his frustration to Jones either, he's left Jackson's camp and is training in Florida with former Jackson wrestling coach Mike Van Arsdale. Jackson and his striking coach Mike Winkeljohn both have commented on the situation and the upcoming Jones-Evans bout.
MMA coach, Greg Jackson: "I think everybody has the tools to win. Rashad (Evans) certainly does. If "Rampage" (Jackson) catches you with a big punch he's got the tools. Everybody's got the tools to win."

Striking coach, Mike Winkeljohn: "I love Rashad (Evans) to death. I think he’s much better than people even know. He could be scary for Jon. He has the tools to beat Jon Jones."

Former Strikeforce champ, Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal: "Every man can be beaten. Without a doubt I can beat Jon Jones. I know I can beat Jon Jones. He's a good fighter, but all it takes is a good game plan, a good camp and I know I would win. My brother Rashad got the tools to beat him too. Rashad's going to beat him."
UFC boss Dana White told fans that UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones would face Rashad Evans in "September or October".

Pretty simple....

Coach trying to make as much money as possible for both his fighters. Can’t blame him. But hey I’m with him, I think Rashad can pull it off.

Me too.

Rashad has some of the best punch to takedown transitions in the sport. His heavy hands and supersonic shot are a formidable combination. If anyone can get Jones down, it’ll be Rashad.

Wrestlers who

A) Don’t set up their takedowns well in an MMA context (IE mixing strikes with level changes), and B) Are bad from their back.

Rashad is hard to keep down on his back, and masterfully blends punches with his shot. I don’t personally like Rashad’s chances to win, but also don’t discount the dude from being able to take Jones down or put leather on his chin. The guy is seriously fast.

have you ever seen him keep someone down?

Jon Jones will have a huge size and advantage on Rashad and it is hard to setup TDs when you are on the outside

by Mohammedini Hussein on Apr 13, 2011 5:42 AM EDT up reply actions

I sure have.

Here’s a better question- have you ever seen how Jones reacts to heavy punches while on his back?

As for Jones’ reach advantage- yes, Rashad will miss his takedowns if he shoots from really far out.

Forrest was already completely rocked there. Considering how effortlessly Jones has defended the takedown attempts of Bader and O’Brien, I don’t think Rashad gets him down more than once, if at all, and Rashad’s top control has always been the weakest point in his wrestling game, even in college.

Could be interesting on the feet, but Rashad is outclassed by far on the ground in this one. Jones will rightly be -300 or more here.

I don't know how you could say that,

considering we’ve never seen Jones on his back.

Also, Forrest wasn’t rocked before getting put on his back. He slipped, and Rashad started mauling him with shots. His top control is good when he isn’t tired, he kept Rampage & Thiago down and stayed busy.

Jones’ takedown defense has been on point so far, but he’s never fought a guy with the hands and takedowns Rashad does.

First no he was rocked

secondly, How can you not agree rushed will het trucked. Jones has beaten every body by stoppage with relative ease. I don’t see rushed being the guy to beat jones. Not to mention it’s been about a year since rushed has even had a pro fight. Your first fight back is going to be against the greatest LHW possibly ever.

Hahaha……. Rashad is in trouble. I don’t know who couldn’t side with jones he’s young classy and is an exciting fighter what more do u want.

He’s going to rake rashads lunch and there isn’t shit he can do about it.

I just rewatched the 3'rd round of Evans/ Griffin.

Forrest wasn’t rocked from any standing strikes. Rashad caught a kick, grazed Forrest with a punch, and then swarmed him with heavy GnP from the top. The ground strikes were what rocked Forrest.

I agree with you

but saying “man best equipped” makes it seem like it is going to make a difference, you know? I think Jones’s reach and wrestling will negate it. Remember when everyone was thinking Shogun’s elite striking was going to be too much?

by TRob on Apr 13, 2011 8:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Best man equipped

literally means the guy who has the best chance, the guy with the best skills with which to accomplish a goal. Again- out of any fighter on the UFC 205 lb. roster, Rashad has the best shot of putting Jones on his back.

I agree that Jones should win, but I think we MMA fans are pretty quick to anoint a guy as unbeatable. The one thing we can’t be in MMA is sure of a fighter’s invincibility.

Rashad's wrestling

didn’t mean sh*t to Machida, or Rampage. Shogun dominated ‘Page in Pride & was evenly matched w/ Machida and got totally manhandled by Jones. Is he invincible, no, but I can’t say Rashad’s wrestling (even being best in 205 & familiar w/ Jones) is going to make even the slightest difference. I just can’t see it.

by TRob on Apr 13, 2011 8:49 AM EDT up reply actions

Correction

Rashad’s wrestling was effective against ‘Page, but the fight ended with Rashad on his back, and didn’t give him much advantage overall…

by TRob on Apr 13, 2011 9:00 AM EDT up reply actions

Rashad's wrestling didn't mean shit to Rampage?

You mean the guy who he repeatedly took down throughout the course of their fight?

And of course Rashad’s wrestling didn’t mean shit to Machida, the guy has sterling takedown defense, and great evasive footwork. Noone had figured out how to beat the guy yet, and noone yet has taken him down consistently & kept him there.

Your use of MMA math here is really not applicable in this situation.

My point

was that Page & Machida were both competitive w/ Shogun. Machida handled Rashad fairly easily. Jones handled Shogun effortlessly which makes him seem a step above Shogun (to my own disbelief). MMA math or not I don’t see the kind of wrestling from Rashad that he would need to be competitive w/ Jones is a wrestler unlike Shogun & Machida and uses his wrestling way better than ’Page.

by TRob on Apr 13, 2011 9:16 AM EDT up reply actions

Styles make fights.

First off, Rampage was nowhere NEAR competitive against Shogun, but he was also a completely different fighter back then.

Machida was competitive in the first match (although we all know who REALLY won that fight), and Shogun knocked his ass out in the rematch.

Rashad fought Machida at the worst possible time- a time where Machida hadn’t been figured out yet, and a time when he was in love with his striking. Those 2 things led him to getting knocked the hell out. Rashad’s strength is and always will be his wrestling, and every fighter he’s decided to take down, he’s taken down.

Not that he WILL do that to Jones, but he certainly has the ability to, given the right strategy & execution. Brian Stann said that Rashad whoops Jones in the gym. I definitely favor Jones, but also don’t consider the man untouchable. He has some flaws in his game, and all it takes in this game is someone who can negate your strengths and exploit your flaws to beat you.

I think Rashad has as good a chance as any to be the first man to get Jones down consistently and make him work from his back. Considering that Rashad has been on top multiple times in his career, and Jones has never taken down or put on his back, it will be interesting to see how he handles himself if/ when that happens.

I do, and for decent odds I’d put money on a prop bet that Rashad is unable to take him down at all.

Bader is a better wrestler, with better takedowns than Rashad, and he looked inept.

Rashad looks effective taking Rampage and Thiago down, but that’s not a huge leap from taking Mousasi down. Not to mention getting into and/or surviving the extremely close range he took Rampage down from is highly improbable against Jones.

Then go back and see the lightning quick shot, from a serious distance, that Jones took Bader down with and tell me you honestly think Rashad has an answer for that.

I don’t care what Brian Stann says, or why he really said it, this won’t even be competitive in the clinch or on the ground.

As for FUBAR, yes- the layoff is a concern, and that’s one of the reasons I favor Jones. Then again, Rashad’s game isn’t really predicated on the kinds of things that cage rust detriment the most- timing, precision, reflexes… Rashad’s an aggressor, not a counter fighter.

Good point about Rashad perhaps not being affected as much as many by the layoff.

While Jones likely won’t be more 10 or so pounds heavier, I think he has far greater functional strength than Rashad does.

Yea, Jones is going to run right through Rashad, just like Werdum had no business getting in there with Fedor, Frankie Edgar is entirely too small and is nowhere near the level of Penn, Shogun is going to rape Griffin, etc. etc. etc.

first fight back is going to be against the greatest LHW possibly ever

Really dude, really? Just like Machida right? How about Jone defends the title, I don’t know… ONCE, before we start calling him great let alone greatest ever.

That being said, I pick Jones, but Rashad is more than capable of taking that title along with all the other animals at 205. To think otherwise is just incredible naive and ignorant.

It took a bazillion hard strikes from Machida to make him do the stanky leg, and he absorbed massive power shots from Rampage & Thiago without going out. The real problem in the T. The thing is..

Rashad fought a guy who makes highlight reels off counterstriking in Machida and Rashad played the striking game with him.

Bones is not a counterstriker; he is a creative and speedy striker with an insane reach with excellent takedowns and a great top game.

Thoeretically you want a guy like Rashad to come in and put Jones on his back and keep him there and we STILL have not seen Bones guard or off his back. We need guys who sets up shots very well: punch shoot, punch shoot Rashad has that down in spades.

The problem for Rashad is Jones’ uncany ability to deeply analyse a fighter by religiously watching tape on his next opponent. I expect Jones to study every tendency Evans possesses while fighting in the cage. If Evans hopes to win this, he will need to be on the very top of his game and a trump card that Jones has not seen before the fight.

It will be an interesting bout none the less.

I thought it was a really good movie.

The ending was definitely a buzzkill, but the acting/ characters, cinemetography, dialogue… all great IMO.

I thought it was pretty poor.

You knew from the outset that, despite not training women and phoning in the grizzled curmudgeon he’s played his whole career, Eastwood would train her. You knew a retired Morgan Freeman would find a way to get that last KO (pithy one-liner included). You knew he wouldn’t tell her what the nickname was until some Important Plot Point. You knew something tragic would happen. Swank’s family was the stereotypical white-trash moneygrubbers. Etc.

Does he really believe he can win? I don’t care what game plan, the only way anyone is getting that LHW belt in the next 5 is if Jones gets shot chasing bad guys.

everyone thought Machida was unbeatable

same with BJ Penn, same with Shogun, same with Lesnar, etc. Jones is a work in progress and a true prodigy, but he can be beat. it’s going to take a lot of work and observation to figure out the Bones puzzle.

by Victor Rodriguez on Apr 12, 2011 11:19 PM EDT reply actions

Someone will probably beat Jones

because everybody loses (to something other than a DQ on a silly rule) in MMA at some point, but I’m having a hard time believing Rashad’s the guy to do it. Jones absolutely feasts on wrestlers, including those with heavy hands. Rashad is the archetype of a fighter that Jones just eats for dinner.

I think if and when he loses it’s going to be a guy with an asymmetrical skill set: either a top flight submission guy or a striker with power in both hands.

My money is on Lorenz Larkin.

For future Bones Challengers:

- First things first, be wary of closing in the distance; he will usually throw out either a spinning back kick or an earial kick to keep you on your toes and away from his face

-DO NOT ENGAGE IN CLINCHES! This is a major no no when facing Jones as he will dominate almost anyone in the clinch, whether it be striking or takedowns/throws. If he forces you into a clinch, DEFEND DEFEND and try to break and keep dsitance ASAP.

-When pressed UP AGAINST THE CAGE, DEFEND YOUR FACE. Jones loves throwing out spinning back elbows/fists on the break. The least of your worries is a takedown.

-If he rocks you, as with most fighters, the basic instinct is to cover the face…JONES KNOWS THIS. That is the reason why he will go straight to the guy with a piston fist.

-If he gets you down, secure guard right away and hold onto his hands for dear life or he will blast you with shattering elbows. Ocassionally put up a submnission attempt, as you will end up losing anyways if you decide to just keep him in guaed (cough Vera cough)

That said, it seems that the answer is to not fight him at all and that it is hopeless……almost, but not quite.

-You need to be confident in your takedown and your clinch game; you can’t second guess yourself.

-You need to be patient, and conservatively counter strike whenever possible. (Pick your shots, don’t waste energy as you are expending a lot of it to compensate that long ranged defense (his 84.5 inch reach)

-Be creative as well. Creativity can also include unpredictability. Jones feeds of predcitibility and tendencies of fighters and that’s how he is able to pick them apart even before the fight begins.

-Lastly, just be CONFIDENT. Jones thrives on this alone. This is what got him so far and this is what will keep him going. Sure he is young and extremely athletic but his belief in his ownself is unparalleled. Those flashy moves would not be possible had he not been confident in pulling them off. He risks moves that have great consequences if failed, but his confidence prevents it from doing so.

So that’s it. A lot simpler said than done ofcourse, but I believe there are plenty of people that could threaten Jones. The biggest issue is Jone’s sheer ability to analyze anything and everything about a fighter to the finest details. His brain is his most lethal weapon against his challengers, so I suggest to the challengers, that they do the same.

by ultima0chaotic on Apr 12, 2011 11:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I was going to say this was damage control, but these are all very old quotes.. why on earth are you running with quotes that are almost three weeks old (in Winklejohn’s case) as new news? The only new quote here is Mo’s

At least give Rashad’s response as well, this is absurd. ProMMA radio interviewed Rashad and got his comments on the interview from Greg, Rashad’s comments and tone shed a lot of light on it. The link is http://www.prommaradio.com/mma-player/player.html — It starts at the 28:00 min mark

If you haven’t listened to it, Rashad sounds extremely upset about all of Greg’s comments and states Greg was lying. He says you can ask Jardine, Phil Nurse and some others who will all back him up. Just listen to his tone before and and after the Jackson quotes, it’s quite disturbing. Also Rashad states that he’s in Florida training with JZ, Santiago and some of the others that recently left ATT.

he can beat jones?

well when he thought he could strike to defend his title he got DOMINATED.

Jones is amazing, a rare breed of champion, one that even Chael sonnen worships and admires.

Rashad has decent striking, I dont know if he would like to be on his back but thats what karma is there for. I think if he is really determined he can beat JBJ,
Although I dont think I can handle his drama if he was actually champion again
