Brian Foster Out of UFC 129 Due to Failed MRI Scan

Welterweight Brian Foster has been forced out of his upcoming bout with Sean Pierson at UFC 129, due to a minor brain hemorrhage he suffered in training. The UFC confirmed the news today on its website, and Foster's trainer at the H.I.T. Squad, Marc Fiore, told MMA Junkie that doctors believe the burst blood vessel would heal on its own without surgery, but would require Foster to rest and heal. A replacement opponent for Sean Pierson is being sought with the event just over two weeks away.
"A blood vessel broke open, started bleeding, and turned into a brain hemorrhage," Fiore said of the injury. "Our doctor and the UFC doctor said they won't clear him to fight."

"It should heal on its own, and if it's good, he's cleared to fight. If not, then we have to obviously (look at surgical options)."

I didn’t know there was such a thing as a minor brain hemorrhage. For some reason I think brain hemorrhage and think death.

by Fear the RUSH on Apr 12, 2011 2:31 PM EDT reply actions

Hemorrhages typically cause death by putting pressure on the brain. If there’s not enough blood leakage to pressurize the brain, it’s not as much of a death risk:

A cerebral hemorrhage is an intra-axial hemorrhage; that is, it occurs within the brain tissue rather than outside of it. The other category of intracranial hemorrhage is extra-axial hemorrhage, such as epidural, subdural, and subarachnoid hematomas, which all occur within the skull but outside of the brain tissue. There are two main kinds of intra-axial hemorrhages: intraparenchymal hemorrhage and intraventricular hemorrhages. As with other types of hemorrhages within the skull, intraparenchymal bleeds are a serious medical emergency because they can increase intracranial pressure, which if left untreated can lead to coma and death. The mortality rate for intraparenchymal bleeds is over 40%.

Sucks that he has to be off the card, but I’m glad they caught it.

yeah, strikes me as something that would be extremely dangerous to fight with, had it not been detected.

That’s why, in a perfect world, these guys would get scanned once a month (when they’re in training anyway).

He’s not in the tourney or was even in a contending fight.

May have a Champion's Clause

Besides, I doubt MFC lets him out of his contract for a one-fight shot in the UFC. They’d have to sign him to a multiple-fight deal, like they did with McKee.

The bad news come on the heels of another serious injury from which Foster recently recovered. Fiore said the welterweight received a hard kick to the groin six weeks ago that caused one of his testicles to burst, and doctors were forced to remove it.

I wonder what the effect will be on him the next time he’s forced to make a decision between following the big head, or the little head.

Rupturing a testicle has to be one of the most painful injuries a man can sustain. The thought of it is painful.

Damn! A Brain hemmorraghe AND a burst testicle in one training camp?

This guy epitomizes the saying: No pain, no gain.

Hope he recovers swiftly and as healthy as possible. I don’t know if anything is worth destruction of ones testes though.
