Mixed Martial Artwork - UFC 129: St. Pierre vs. Shields
UFC 129 is in a few weeks and as it will be filled with some of the biggest MMA stars I decided to bring this series back, and make another edition of "Mixed Martial Artwork". The piece above is a mixed media painting on a 25x30 canvas board, done by Christopher Craig, which features the Georges St. Pierre vs. Jake Shields main event.
There are a bunch of excellent artwork featuring Georges St. Pierre, Jose Aldo, Lyoto Machida, and Randy Couture after the jump. Follow the links to view the bigger sizes, and don't forget to let the artists know what you think in the comments.
Other feature worthy artwork from the UFC 129 fighters:
Georges St. Pierre by May Fong
No guys, that is not just another GSP photo, that is actually a digital painting, done by the very talented May Fong. Don't believe me? Here are some close ups for you (follow the links for the bigger resolution):
Here's a very interesting caricature of Randy Couture. It's a digital painting, and yes, that's a fetus on his ear:
Randy - the anamorphic - Couture, a caricature by Martin de Diego Sádaba
Jose Aldo a digital painting by iamymai
Legend a painting by NGAUGEinc
American Hero a painting by NGAUGEinc
Here are some artwork from the UFC 129 fighters that have already been featured on the Mixed Martial Artwork series:
For those of you who remember, May Fong also made a similar piece on Lyoto Machida, who happens to be fighting on the same card as well.
The Ascending Dragon - Machida by MayFong
You can also check out the close ups, the step by step process of this digital painting, as well as other Machida artwork, on Mixed Martial Artwork: Lyoto Machida... Back in May 2009, we also featured a digital painting of Lyoto's UFC 129 opponent, Randy Couture:

I thought he was a good bit darker due to the “lighting” from that black bg.

Yeah, definitely the best. I have no love for/don’t understand the need for digital replicas of photos. Seems pointless and unimaginative to me.
Not that I condone facism or any ism for that matter. Isms are in my opinion, not good. A person shouldn't believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.
I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.
what about realistic looking traditional paintings and sketches?
(I think it really depends on how you look at things…and how much you weigh things like entire “look”, skill, or composition… It’s all subjective, like well, for all kinds of art)

(this is by shoman art of course)

That’s a lot better I think, as that is putting some imagination into it. I still reckon the same effect could be achieved or even bettered with the original photos and some filters in photoshop in about 15 minutes.

that's missing the point though...

The whole idea is to show that you have the skill to do realistic images (things usually possible only with cameras), but by hand… That takes a whole lot of time, dedication, and skill…

But its a pointless skill. The photo is there. Who cares if it can be replicated? That’s what Kinkos is for.

It shows a masterful level of technical skill.
Think of them as the Anderson Silva’s of the art world, showboating in the ring. You may not like them flaunting their skills in that way, but you cant deny the skill involved.

to each his own I guess...
That’s certainly not my style as well, but I can reallyyyy appreciate an artist’s skill, cause I know how hard (and time consuming) it takes to do that…
and if you think that artist can only do “copies of photos”, she also did a “conceptual” piece for Brock:

Yeah I don’t care too much for them either. There are some artists who can pencil draw a photo and do it so fucking well that at a glance or from a distance it looks like an actual photo. I’m an artist myself and I used to replicate images from photos. I mean they weren’t superior by any means, but I’d say that they were pretty good. After a while though it just seemed kinda pointless because, you know, you already have a…photo that took a second to produce as opposed to 20-30 hours of drawing. But yeah it has it’s place though and there’s no denying how skilled, patient, and talented artists like MayFong are.

I dig the Aldo and bizarro Couture ones. I’m not really interested in those doing like copies of photos though, there is no artistic value to that IMO. I guess maybe it’s impressive on a purely technical level, but it’s just not something I enjoy. And I’m sort of wondering why she made GSP’s skin like 10x more brown than what it actually is, looks like he went on a two month tanning trip to Egypt or something.
yeah that’s basically it, they showcase the artist’s technical mastery and skills.

Right, and I can see why for someone like Anton who works with digital editing or stuff like that, it could be interesting. For me personally it doesn’t really do anything though, but I’m not slagging them off if that’s something they enjoy doing.

Not really a fan of the replicas either, but I understand how much time and skill it takes to do one of those. That Machida picture is spot-fucking on!

I’m guessing it’s a play on his cauliflower ear, that’s all I can think of really. Maybe playing around with a cauliflower sprout and a fetus…maybe lol idk.

from the artist's comments
(I can’t avoid remember when Joe Rogan, before a combat, said “he must have a mouse hidden in that ear” hahahaha, i liked the idea but the fetus looks better in the coliflower ear than a mouse saying “hi!” lol) :D

I like how Shields
looks awkward in his striking, even in a painting. Full extension, yet well short of the mark.
