Paul Daley Claims Early Stoppage vs. Nick Diaz
Strikeforce Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz retained his title in a thrilling one round bout against Paul Daley on Showtime. With only 3 seconds left in the round, Daley questions the stoppage by referee Big John McCarthy which ended the fight: (via Facebook)
"Is in good health. Some u win, some u lose. A little frustrating, I made mistakes I told myself I wouldn't do. A little to rushed. Think the stoppage was early, especially with so little time left in the round. Now some timw off, a few holidays and some downtime. See what's next. Team Semtex all day. Love u all....still, including the... HATERS. Mwah."

The stoppage seemed fine to me. Sure it could have maybe gone into a 2nd round and gave us as fans a show but fighter safety should come first. I felt Big John did fine. I hope we get to see Paul Daley fight Cyborg next. That would be a pretty exciting battle. Paul definitely brings it and puts on some exciting fights. I think they should also put him up against a decent wrestler. If he can develope some decent takedown defense, he will be a tough fight for anybody. He should take some time training to defend against wrestlers though. He hit Diaz with some pretty decent shots and if Diaz can’t learn to avoid punches like that, his future will look much like Chuck Liddell’s was. Not to take anything away from Diaz. He is a beast, an exciting fighter, and a great showman. Can’t wait for his next fight as well.
yeah
I felt Big John did fine too. Imagine standing in there in that fight, not as a fan, but someone that has to protect the both of them while theyre winging punches like that. Guy made call in a couple seconds. Respect.

Big John probably overreacted to Daley's tumble...
which was a combo of being slightly dazed and taking an awkward step, but this stoppage is no travesty.
given that when push came to shove, daley handled this fight in a professional manner, I don’t think zuffa should axe himanytime soon.

how is he intelligently defending his face with his hands when he’s on the ground?
He’s not.
It’s hard to tell because we can’t see his eyes but I think Big John probably saw it coming while he was still on his feet. Not to mention the way his head kind of lolls when he hits the mat.

i’m basically saying that I personally wouldnt argue with it either way, but I can see how people would think it was early.
I am entertained and I don’t think it was an excessively bad stoppage, but also would have not complained if daley were given 3 more seconds. its possible he may not have answered the bell.
With no egregious error, I see no reason to repeatedly debate this.

Not really.
I don’t have a huge problem with the stoppage, but that very well could be a case of the guy just being really bummed out. Being given a hand to get up isn’t conclusive evidence that he was done.

Well,
again- that could be from getting rocked… or that could be from fighting really hard for 5 straight minutes.
Personally, I tend to agree that he was pretty concussed at that point, but we can’t really KNOW. I do trust Big John, and in all honesty Nick had all the momentum at that point. As others have said, probably a tad too soon on the stop. I would’ve liked to have seen how it would’ve played out after Daley had pushed Diaz off with his legs.

Nick stepped back when he saw big john stepping in.

i don't see why people say that
I don’t care bout the stoppage one way or the other but to me it just looks like he thought the stool was closer than it was, and they always help you up after a stoppage they don’t just leave you.
This actually opens the debate for me. Daley is talking to someone, he looks like he could’ve done it without his corners’ help, and they were probably worried he had a knee injury or something. He’s looking straight ahead and doesn’t look dazed at all. This is the first time I saw this part, and people were making it out to be some big deal.

Nick was past his guard, while Daley was against the cage with no where to go,while Nick was dropping serious blows.
That was not early stoppage.

But Daley was fighting back. His hips were OFF the ground, his legs were pushing Diaz off, and his arms were flailing in front of him. It was looking like Diaz was taking the fight anyways, but I’m really surprised that people are arguing that it was a good stoppage. It wasn’t the worst I’ve seen, but in a championship fight, it’s one of the worse. Imagine if they’d stopped Edgar Maynard in the first? This was going to make that fight look like pattycakes in comparison. Instead we were robbed of it.

What bothers me is that whether or not it was early
There’s no way Daley comes out for round 2. That is just nonsense. And if he somehow staggered to center, I think Diaz would have literally put this guy in the hospital.
watch the gif diaz was past his guard.
The only time Daley put his FEET on Diaz is when big john was waiving it off and nick backed up.
Everyone saying this couldn’t be more wrong.
Nick was past Daleys guard, there were no feet on nicks hips.

Being passed someone’s guard does not constitute a stoppage. The guy was clearly intelligently defending himself.

http://www.groggybikini.com
after you get dropped its not intelligent to let nick diaz pass your guard and punch you in the head until the ref steps in.
The only pushing off daley did was after big john waived it off. There was no defence being offered by daley. He wasn’t covered up ,he was getting cracked. Flailing while being punched isn’t INTELLIGENTLY defending yourself. Hell, it isn’t even a unintelligent defence. Its just something people do when there world is spinning from being punched too many times.

I don’t think you’ve watched much MMA. Unintelligent defending is when a guy is turtled up and doing nothing to improve his position, no long has any control and is making no attempt at any defense. Daley was doing that, and even though he was getting punched in the face, it wasn’t like they were connecting as power shots, like, for example, Carwin’s were on Brock Lesnar, or Maynard on Edgar.
my band
http://www.groggybikini.com
Watched it again. Daley had his left leg on Diaz and was pushing him before McCarthy stopped it. Not only that, the last two punches did not connect, before that I couldn’t see the angle, but you can’t tell how many of those connected either. They weren’t hard shots and Daley clearly looked like he was struggling to get position, not given up or whatever.
I like both those guys, I just feel robbed of a good fight going into the second round when the guy looked like he still had fight in him. Most others are just Diaz fans relieved that he had won after being knocked down twice in a round.

Insane fight
Saw it live and it was one of the best fights I’ve ever seen but it was a legit stoppage.
He had no answer for diaz. His big throw Kick boxing style just couldn’t handle the volume of punches that Diaz has.
He had his leg up but his hands weren’t really doing anything to protect his head.
Game over.
looked to me diaz had 4 unanswered shots
not a terrible stoppage but not a perfect one either.

the first was weak as piss, and the last missed his head
Yea, I still agree with it as well. Also seems to be a lack of outrage in the tone of the post. If he really believed it I think he would be way more vocal about it.

Well, there isn’t anything to be Objective about.
1. His head loll’d when he hit the ground.
2. His eyes weren’t looking at Nick.
3. His hands weren’t protecting him in anyway.
4. He couldn’t even stand on his own.
He wasn’t going to keep fighting, it was a rhetorical.
If Daley was defending himself, and could stand afterwards I’d be objective. If you’re a fan of Daley just say so but people need to learn to know what they are looking at in a fight so we don’t have these debates.
by Roaringblood on Apr 10, 2011 12:38 PM EDT up reply actions 9 recs
How the Hell could you tell that his eyes weren’t looking at Nick? It looked to me like he was looking straight at him. You don’t really know if he couldn’t stand on his own. He looked perfectly alert and was sitting there bummed out. His corner came to help him up as he was talking or listening to someone else which might have made it look worse than it was. Your objectivity doesn’t seem very objective. Heads roll when they hit the ground when guys get knocked down, it doesn’t usually get stopped unless they go stiff. I can’t remember his hands exactly, but I don’t remember thinking that they were flopped down useless. If you’re a fan of Nick that’s fine, but don’t throw around objectivity when there is none.

What? They were holding him down for god’s sake. And then after they decided they had held him down on the mat long enough, they helped him sit up on the stool. But that doesn’t mean he couldn’t have gotten up way earlier and without help if he had wanted to. Yes he was a little rocked, but not that bad IMO.

but that is pretty nice technique. Knuckles, wrist and elbow all in a straight line, turning her shoulders into the shot. Now you might nitpick that her left should be up guarding her chin, but I would argue that she can tell her opponent is on the ropes and is going for the finish with a flurry.

John McCarthy is the worst referee ever!
How long has Big John been a referee in MMA? Ever since UFC 1. McCarthy has stopped alot of fights early that i’ve seen. There was a fight back in UFC 3 i believe when John stopped Brian Johnston from ko’ing his opponent. As a result, Brian Johnston suffered a bloodied nose because McCarthy ran into him while stopping the fight. McCarthy also stopped the fight between Kevin Randleman and Chuck Liddell, where clearly we all saw that Randleman was not out yet. And once again in this fight with just seconds left of the 1st round McCarthy stopped the fight. A referee of his statue should know better by now that this is a title fight. Don’t stop until the fighter is out! Over all John McCarthy is just a bad referee.

TK
by your logic
no one is the best in the business, no one has been in it as long as Big John, at least not reffing. You can’t call him the worst ever for quoting only three fights either, thats absurd. I could sit here and point out plenty of other problems refs have, especially Herb. And heres the problem, we aren’t in the cage at the time that it happened, we benefit from different angles, and slow motion after the fact, and tonnes of replays, all of which no ref has access to at the moment he calls a fight, Daley was on his back, getting pounded, flailing like a mad man, and the only thing he did, was try to push Diaz off with his feet, thats a reaction, not an intelligent defense, so yeah, the right call was made, despite what others think. This is after all supposed to be about fighter safety, isn’t it? But if you still think he is the worst in the world at reffing, nut up, go and get your license to ref, and get in there and make split second decisions that we can all critisize after the fact.
How about a rematch!
Since this was such a great fight/round, i sure will like to see a rematch. And i’m still sticking with “early stoppage.” This time there will be no John McCarthy but maybe Herb Dean or Mario Yamasaki. Zero tolerance for refs! Hahahaha.

If that gif of Daley getting helped up isn’t enough to convince you, then I don’t know what is. I don’t care if there is 1 second left in the round, if the fight is over it’s over. When I saw it at first i thought it was early, but after watching the replay and Daley after the fight it was pretty clear that it was a good stoppage.
Illegal Kick
Why is no one talking about Daley’s illegal kick? It was a blatant attempt to kick Diaz in the head on the ground. Just because it didn’t land doesn’t mean it wasn’t any less dangerous or thuggish than it was. He should be fined just like Michael Bisping. To me that’s worse than the Koscheck sucker punch.

Not really
It’s a legit attack. Much less likely to be a foul than the knee to the shoulder GSP does every so often, for instance. Ain’t never heard anyone complain about that…

but when Muspell's sons through the dark forest ride,

Looked to be aimed at the body live, and I had a decent view.
Head was moving a lot, Daley went to the body with an attack that didn’t lower his base to get sucked into guard. Totally legal. GSP’s axe kicks to a downed opponent are closer to illegal since you can argue they are stomps and all stomps toa grounded opponent are illegal. Kicks to the body of a grounded opponent are totally legal. See Irvin vs. Ramirez.

I totally agree. I remember when that dirty filthy disgusting Randy Couture was throwing knees at Mike Van Arsdales head while on the ground back at UFC 54. Mike was down and Randy just KEPT throwing those knees right at his head! I mean, they kept hitting Mikes shoulder but Randy totally should have been fined or DQ’d or something for his multiple attempts at that illegal move. I pray to God that you realize that this is sarcasm because the idea of assuming that Paul attempted to make that kick illegal is ridiculously stupid. Do you really think he would want to jeapordize his chance at getting the strikeforce belt by getting disqualified? Or ruining his chances at getting back into the UFC by fighting dirty with Dana sitting cageside? Even if it was an attempt at doing an illegal kick, we have no way of knowing and no reason to assume that it was.
I HATE Nick Diaz with a passion
but I dont think it was a horrible stoppage
Confucius says:
"Baseball is wrong; man with four balls cannot walk."
Daley was,
as Brock would put it, “[put] on a street [he] did not know the name of.”
The stumble showed he was already in bad condition, just because his hands were kind of up in the air ineffectually failing to block a series of six punches doesn’t make for an intelligent defense. He didn’t complain about the stoppage at the time for a reason.
I only saw about 3 clean shots land...
and none of them had Daley go limp for even a split second. Though at the same time watching it on video (and on the replay) looks 10x different from being in the cage, watching it live. It may have looked more severe to Big John then it did to us watching it on TV.
Also watching the GIF of him being helped to his chair, didn’t really make me think he was completely wobbled and out of it. More so it looked like they were helping him up, he went to sit, and the chair wasn’t there haha.
But overall, was it a horrible stoppage? no, but was it an excellent stoppage? no. Overall I won’t complain, as honestly I don’t really like either fighter all to much (as people, I like their fights), I wish they had both KOd each other at the same time.
I dissagree, i would say it was a horrible stoppage.
As a fan of both diaz and daley I think its quite obvious Big John jumped in too early. If you watch a few punches do land but Daley is actually pushing him away with his feet and adjusting his position.
People seem to keep using this “He couldn’t stand up immediately” or “he needed help back to his feet”. Firstly Big John won’t let you stand up… its his job to keep you there! Secondly, its impossible to tell if Daley really needed help to stand or because the fight was over he used the help hes getting… fighting like that takes its toll on anyone.

The stoppage wasn’t terrible taking into account the way he fell, but kicking someone away from you with your legs should count as an intelligent defense.

It did for Brock...

Clearly a premature stoppage
Just like this one:

See how Bisping’s hands are up? That’s clearly an intelligent defense.

ok, how about this
I won’t use the “he couldn’t stand” thing, because i agree with you on that point, that happens far to late to have any real bearing, what does have bearing is this. Either he lost his footing before falling, or was rocked, I’m leaning a little toward the former, but he did take some shots during the exhange leadign up to his falling. When he hit the ground, Diaz stacked him up, and started to drop punches, most of Daley’s movement at that point could be attributed to Diaz pushing him or at the very least putting his weight on him. Daley’s only defens at that point is putting his arms in the air, flailing, not what one would call intelligent defense, as for his pushing Diaz off with his feet, would that not be more reaction then actual action.
I'm sure Paul Daley's brain...
Wouldn’t appreciate you guys saying it should have gotten punched several more times.

Doesn’t appreciate that he chose getting punched in the head as a profession

What?
How did you make that jump?
Conducting an experiment on knocking people out in particular ways would be unethical.
I just think it's ridiculous that a clearly...
Dazed Daley (also the name of my trip hop group) should have withstood unnecessary punishment to appease some people.
Was he out? Clearly not. But he was in no condition to keep fighting. As if a fighter has to have his arms and legs sticking up, with his eyes rolled back for it to be a legit stoppage.

Big John obviously takes the safety first approach which should be commended but I think he really just wants to be that guy who at the end of his career sits down and does the whole “if I can save just one person’s life then I will take all the criticism in the world” thing.
Surely being aware of his surroundings he would have heard the 10 sec warning and known that there was only a couple of seconds left in the round. you would think in a title fight you would at least give the challenger the benefit of a few more seconds and then make a more observant and informed decision during the break – its not like Daley was out cold and getting brutally beaten into a pulp.
Daley was still defending, however poorly it was it still shows some sign of thought and that he still has some of his wits about him. He was putting his arms up and trying to rock from side to side so the punches would miss. I would argue that he did a better job of looking like he was defending than when Diaz got dropped – its just that he was less accurate with the GNP.
If he goes back to the corner and Daley is in la la land, stop the fight. Just at least give a guy the benefit of the doubt for a few seconds in what could possibly be the biggest moment and accomplishment of his life.
ACL?
Anyone see how Daley fell? It almost looks like he blew his knee?
I'm from Canada, and they think I'm slow eh!
In the video
he states his knee was fine, he just happened to slip after being rocked by a couple good shots. When I was watching it I thought he fell back weird too.

It looks like he got rocked by the uppercut at 0:16 and was sort of leaning against the cage before stumbling forward, looking for a desperation clinch or sloppy takedown attempt, only to have Diaz kind of push him off.

great fight
This fight was almost the next best thing to happen to Daley other than winning. It was a war and the fans are going to want to watch more Daley fights in the future. He actually comes off as a really cool dude in the interview above. Hopefully Dana and Zuffa can work something out. Daley is still a top fighter who can still have several interesting match ups from Strikforce and the UFC.

I'm still holding out hope for Mayhem vs. Diaz.
After what I saw last night from Nick, I truly believe he would smash Miller.

I would love to see a Diaz vs Daley II
but for now I would be happy with Daley vs Cyborg

Good stoppage
Of all the horrible stoppages I’ve seen, this isn’t in the same solar system. Remember Johny Hendricks against Amir Sadollah as he was standing up?
You’re saying it’s a good stoppage because it wasn’t as bad as the worst stoppages? That’s some weird logic.

I wouldn’t mind seeing an immediate rematch given that Nick has no other credible challenger in SF. I guess most people will disagree since Daley is not very popular.
while a rematch would be awesome
lasting 1 round out of 5 doesn’t really warrant it (early stoppage or not).
I guess I'll be one of the only ones who says
great fight, Nick proved what a champion he is, and respect to Daley.

Great stoppage
Flailing your arms and legs doesn’t constitute intelligently defending yourself. Case in point, Nick landed 4 or 5 hard shots in a row with Daley not being able to do anything about it. Compare that to Diaz earlier in the round where Daley never got a good shot in once Diaz hit the floor, he kept covering himself well and moving around.
