Diaz is

one tough S.O.B
i really wish the Diaz brothers would learn to stuff a wrestler… or stop a takedown or two..

It's not just

the Diaz bro’s dislike of wrestling, it’s a function of their builds. Neither guy is build for power or speed, but for sheer volume (as evidenced by Nick’s respectable triathlon finish time). Especially in a 3 round fight, they don’t have the wrestling chops or physical ability to stop a benchpressing double leg from a guy like Sherk or Diego.

You can stop a powerful double leg with a build like Nicks with proper technique, since those guys just use strength to get the double leg takedown.

The problem is the when they clinch against the fence, that is where the wrestler gets the relentless take downs. Nick needs to work with his back against the fence.

Such a weird way to go down.

It looks to me like he’s hurt, and is off balance as he tries to push Diaz away. The combo of both sends him to the ground and Diaz hounds on him.
Either way, I’m gutted. I do think the stoppage was a little early but then I didn’t see him struggle to get back to his stool afterwards.

Not only did he struggle to get to it, he almost toppled off after he finally sat down.

So did Frankie Edgar.
This was a fight for the belt, how can anyone stop that while one guy is pushing the other one off himself with 3 seconds to go in the round?

by blutspender on Apr 10, 2011 10:46 AM EDT up reply actions

The difference being

Frankie was intelligently defending himself the entire time. Each time he got hit, he would successfully defend a number of strikes in a row and actually managed to get back to his feet and stand with Maynard for the remainder of the round.

Intelligently defending himself.. like.. pushing your opponent with your legs on his hips off of yourself?

by blutspender on Apr 12, 2011 5:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Was that a delayed response to a liver shot?

He got hit with a right hook, got hurt, ducked, tried to clinch, separeted from Diaz and finally did a stanky leg.

I think it was a combination of things

Daley looked hurt and gassed before the clinch. He was getting his body destroyed and his head rocked. It seemed to me Diaz was holding him up more than we were aware. When he pushed away I think Daley’s equilibrium and gas tank completely went out.

The Ariel Interview

Was really bizarre, love Diaz but every interview seems to be like rumblings of thoughts and incoherent bipolar.

Great night of fights

Aoki gets a first round sub, Jardine shows some old school toughness while getting absolutely outclassed by Mousasi (who looked the best of the night if you ask me), Melendez gets a great stoppage, Diaz has an exciting back and fourth before securing the finish.

Inside the cage it was business as usual for Strikeforce, but with Dana, Shields, and Fertitta in attendance…outside he cage it was anything but.

Don't let my support confuse you, I am in fact a fan of the Giants.

Terrible Stoppage

What I don’t get is, where was John McCarthy for the times when Diaz was dropped twice? If it was Diaz who was defending on the floor in the last 3 seconds, that fight would have went on. Why the hell are refs playing favorites? No wonder the UFC banned Big John….

by GorillaHobo on Apr 10, 2011 1:19 PM EDT reply actions

Oh my geebus.

The two times Daley rocked Diaz, Diaz was in full control, he knew he was gettin hit and he knew he had to do something AND he did. Observe.

Notice how Diaz is trying to keep his head low, bobbing it even, to give Daley a harder time to land a shot. The only thing that landed flush was that ground kick to the body which I thought was a soccer kick to the head at first.

Here, Diaz covers up and is still aware that he is being pounded on, so he quickly grabs Daley’s t wrist for wrist control, Daley avoids Diaz’s guard and they restart…this was the last time Nick was rocked in the fight before this happened:

As mentioned by many, the combination of a body shot, left right, left uppercut and a 3 punch combo, severely dizzied Daley and left him crashing onto the canvas. Daley at first attempts to defend Nick’s shots, but it became clearer that Daley couldn’t defend anylong as his hands went down and Nick was landing flush HARD shots.

GG.

I think he was just exhausted and hurt rather than punchdrunk

That fight was at a pace Daley just can’t maintain…

Iron fists, I think it was a Diaz knee that put Daley down!?

I watched the separation again from the espn video. (Admittedly I didn’t see the fight live) However, it looks like a lifted knee separated the two men and Diaz follow up on it.

by JAYGK95 on Apr 10, 2011 11:27 PM EDT up reply actions

The right straight/hook, which was the last punch Diaz threw in the final combination, landed cleanly on Paul’s chin. I thought it was difficult to see as well, at first, and I think it’s because the camera was right behind Daley’s head, so the punch and the motion of the head move right towards the viewer, making the impact less clear than if seen from the side.
