GSP: Anderson Silva "Is Huge" and Weighs "Around 230 Pounds"
"I don’t know (about fighting Anderson Silva). I need to sit down with my entourage and see first where this fight will take place and what weight, and a bunch of stuff. Right now I’m focusing just on Jake Shields, I don’t see further than Jake Shields."
"It would take a long time (to add the size). Anderson Silva is a huge guy; he’s weighing around 230 pounds. He's very big. Even when he fights as a light heavyweight, he looks bigger than the other guys."
"I don’t know if I’m going to go up (to) 185. I have no idea; it’s a complete reorientation of my career. I have a lot to lose and I haven’t thought about it, I haven’t sat down to talk about it."

GSP likes being a rock star. He is the WW champ, makes money, is famous in Canada, probably gets the VIP treatment, he doenst want to ever have a Serra moment again.
Moving up to MW he isnt hte champ and would have ot fight bigger fighters.
Its alot to risk. He can just stay at WW and fi ght whoever and continue to win and be the best WW ever and make money etc.
It is alot to risk when your the one moving up in weight.
You said it.
The risk is huge. The only way I see that fight happening is at a catchweight of around 177-178. Which i doubt silva can even fucking due if he walked around at 230. I dont think he will vacate. He will murder shields then fight Bj penn and retire his ass.

I (and several others here) have long maintained that this should be (and is far more likely to happen) at a 178-180 CW rather than GSP moving up.

GSP is a pussy who doesn’t want to test himself to see if he’s the very best. I am a GSP fan but I’m tired of his whinin already. If you can handily pretty much beat your division, then challenge yourself, show your character.
Prove you are the best P4P fighter and if you lose to a guy who wins b/c of his size, then you have not failed- that is a warrior, an athlete who isn’t afraid of testing his mettle and coming out on top win or lose. I’m tired of hearing all these excuses lately from him and other fighters re: teammates, etc.

If GSP loses, no matter what the manner....
Dana will have booked the rematch before the official decision is called. I don’t think that the UFC is interested in swapping out GSP for Shields (you might as well have drying paint as the WW champ), and will force Shields to do it again, a la Edgar-Penn.

not that I believe Andy to be 230 lbs, but on the last interview that I translated the reporter mentioned that Anderson weighs over 100 kilos off-season, which he supposedly heard from Anderson himself, who in turn did not correct that claim. 100 kilos = 220 lbs. Maybe he saw that interview and took it as fact?
yo no quiero hacer mas nada
Off season means he probably packs on some fat on top of his natural weight.
I bet he stays in shape but I doubt he is too religious about weight when he isn’t training for a fight. He’s probably a good 10+ pounds lighter than his off-season weight when he is actually ready to start cutting.

all that matters is fighting weight

Anderson's weight is totally unknown, no?
I’ve read alot of contradicting information regarding AS’ weight. I recall before 112 he claimed that he didn’t cut water weight, that he diets down to 185. I’ve also heard the same speculation that he walks around above 215. He certainly looks as big as the 205ers. I’ve also heard AS claim that he could maybe still make 170, like he used to.
There’s just no way of knowing where this guy is really at.

What was the difference in weight between Fedor and Werdum?
Since he was the first guy that beat him. And Fedor is a heavyweight that chose to fight other heavyweights. It’s not like he normally fights at light heavy then moved up for the one fight.

Meh...
It’s always great seeing two of the very best go toe-to-toe, but I think the size discrepancy is too great, in this case. Andy is just too big…
I do think Andy could move up, tho, as he is on par with most of the LHW division.
Eh… whatev’s.
Because...
GSP has been working for years trying to create the perfect welterweight body. He has honed dense muscle mass for the weight to muscle ratio that gives him an advantage over most.
That said, that build advantage for him does not exist at MW.
Well, GSP, your legacy
that one you talk about every once in a while, could be:
1. The great fighter who decisioned every contender in his category
OR
2. The utter badass who beat the P4P #1 fighter in the world in his own weight class.
The great fighter who decisioned every contender in his category
can we stop with this statement? seriously.

finally
so much talk from everywhere and everyone but him.
it’s been said before, we need some consistency with champions in terms of recognizable people and faces. anderson recently said he’ll retire at middleweight—even with never losing, unlike GSP—and his light heavyweight fights were either gifts to dana or punishment from dana. gsp staying @ welterweight is good for both his ‘legacy’ and the commercial success of the sport (in terms of the ever-growing importance of brand recognition regarding products and services).
how this whole ordeal taints or shines his legacy is beyond disbelief. his dominance is anomalous—well, near anomalous—and his history within the sport is unquestionably legendary

Well said.
I want GSP to dominate Anderson Silva, but the fact that he remains the superior welterweight for years will matter more in the long run.
Why? because he can make a name for himself synonymous with all of the legends of sports. Future fighters will enter the division with just the admiration and respect for the great that came before him.
And so be it, though I hate him, perhaps AS could get a similar rep as well to inspire new mma athletes.
But regardless if they fight, one will lose, and then we have a tainted legend like Fedor.
And so be it, though I hate him, perhaps AS could get a similar rep as well to inspire new mma athletes

weight schmeight
so we all know ramage get up to 250 most people feel that hurts him, rumble gets up in the 200 range and many people feel the weight cut hurts him too, being huge is not an automatic advantage in a fight, it is however an automatic excuse for not taking a fight. i admire bj , never ever once that i have heard making gsp size advantage an excuse for anything, he went in he fought he lost, he went back to his fighting career , is still headlinging shows and still has a huge fan following. if gsp thought he could beat anderson they he would have no reason not to take the fight, he would then go on to fight all the same guys that anderson has already fought and prolly beat them too. look at the soft bj penn fighting, look at sachez fighing…soft, and yet they are not offering this as an excuse, win lose or draw. is gsp saying he also needs to get up in the 230 lb range before he fights anderson?

Ah...
Anderson and Rua have similar skillsets, although their styles of striking differ considerably. Shogun has better BJJ than Anderson by a substantial margin imo, if it doesn’t help him against Jones, neither will Anderson’s.
Either guy jacks Jones up in a kick boxing match, but neither guy can stop even 20% of his takedowns…and from there…

In the lead up for the Kos fight...
GSP regularly said that if he moved up to 85, that it would be for good. He made many comments about “when I do something, it’s not to try, it’s to be the best,” etc. Now, he sounds more unsure, which I don’t think we should read too much into- the guy has a fight coming up which will be (on paper) his most legitimate, established opponent since Hughes at the height of his run. I think that the difference in language between then and now is interesting, though I don’t know how telling it is.
Interestingly, I was looking to find some of his quotes about moving up from the lead-in to the Kos fight, and found this quote:
“I think it’s inevitable; I just think it’s a matter of when,” Shari Spencer said. “When and if Georges decides to move up, it will be a permanent move and I think that is what’s difficult to ascertain regarding the timing of the move.”
I find it interesting to read the above quote, after GSP’s quotes about why he fired Spencer, like this one:
We felt we had a different vision for the future of my career and it was best to remain close personally but not in business relationship.
Again, it may just be a case of convenient logic, and none of us have any insight into this situation, but it’s possible that as the possibility of actually doing it draws near, GSP is having second thoughts about the move. Also, we can’t discount the DFW aspect here- he threw what? $165K in Kampann and Sanchez’ pockets last night? I have a hunch that would be chump change on top of what he would offer GSP to move, or fight at a catchweight. Lets just all make sacrifices to Jobu and hoe hope hope that this fight happens.

Yep. Money Talks.
That’s pretty much the golden rule.
For a few million dollars, GSP would fight Greg Jackson himself.

I hear Roy Nelson will fight for food.

Sounds like Springfield's got a discipline problem.
- Maybe that's why we beat them at football nearly half the time.
C'mon GSP it's not the big guys you need to worry about...
it’s the small ones.

Mehh , let's see a rematch with Chael Sonnen !!!
I think Chael is still the man that can beat Silva , GSP is a close second . Is Chael suspended or smthn?
I like how people are already saying GSP is scared. Like he said before, to get his body to a point where he wouldn’t be giving up a huge size disadvantage to Anderson would take a long time. Putting on 30lbs of lean muscle is a whole lot different than cutting 30 lbs and would be a long and measured task.
So to possibly take a year our of fighting while you are at your peak, with your star rising outside of the sport and your earning potential is higher than its ever been is from a business perspective, kinda stupid. Not only that, you have to worry about ring rust and adjusting to fighting at that weight – so to then have to step in the cage with the deadliest fighter on the planet who is a monster at that weight is a really huge task.
When GSP says he needs to think about what is best for his career, it isn’t being scared to fight Anderson. It is because he really needs to think what is best for his career.
For starters, there is no way GSP can add 30 pounds on lean mass in a year, given the extent of his current strength training programs. Of course, if he did somehow, he would have to move to LHW instead of MW as he would be 215-220+ in peak condition.
Having said all of that, nothing he does can match Anderson’s height or length, but weight is not an issue.

you know what...
i am sick of this so-so crap from GSP. he scared of someone else being bigger? so your just going to stay where you are, beating fighter after fighter easily and never pushing yourself? seems like the easy way to me. how will you know how good you are or can be if you stay in the same circle?
It's not a simple matter of size
This is a guy that has clowned a former champion in the weight class above him. Size doesn’t matter if the smaller guy is more skilled or the bigger guy doesn’t have a killer instinct. Maybe every guy posting about GSP being a coward is the baddest mutha fucka in his gym and would fight Shogun Rua tomorrow. And while some would think that’s being a man, most of us think its stupid to take on a world beater without really considering every possible scenario.

The sound of GSP vs Anderson is good but
I don’t see how GSP would really stand a chance against him. Anderson is too big and way too long for him. I would much rather see Anderson vs Shogun/Jones winner for the LHW title. Anderson fighting the people at LHW is compelling to me and a lot better fight than fighting GSP.
