WCW vs. WWF and Why We Can't Let History Repeat Itself
The year was 2001. World Championship Wrestling was in a heap of trouble. The upper management of AOL/Time-Warner had changed, as did the philosophy of the company. Ted Turner, who always had WCW's back since Day 1 and was their biggest backer, no longer had the kind of influence and muscle to keep them on. TNT and TBS dropped WCW after declining ratings for the better part of two years. World Championship Wrestling was a company without a home, and as everyone knows about professional wrestling, a multi-million dollar wrestling company without a television home for revenue might as well be swimming in the beach off Amity Island wrapped in calamari.
Vince McMahon, of course, head of the then World Wrestling Federation was able to purchase his biggest rival and main competitor for a paltry few million dollars, effectively incorporating a monopoly on the North American professional wrestling scene. Along with the purchase of Extreme Championship Wrestling, Vince controlled the top-3 pro wrestling companies in the United States.
How could things possibly go wrong?
After the acquisition of WCW, the initial plan was to run the WWF and WCW and seperate entities (sound familiar?). WWF would have their shows, WCW would have their shows, and Vince would literally rake (actually, he'd probably have Pat Patterson rake) the money into his giant house every week. You're running two companies at once and reaping the benefits of both of them! How could it fail?!
Well, just as Strikeforce ("fun" fights, fighters moving up and down in weight, less importance on titles, stand and bang, tourneys, international fighters) and the UFC (stay at your weight, titles mean everything, win at any cost, wrestling, work your way up) have different types of fights, WWF and WCW had different types of matches. WWF was at the tail-end of their "Crash-TV" attitude-era brand of matches that featured very little wrestling, and lots of surprises, twists, and violence. WCW head-writer Vince Russo (who used to be the head-writer of the WWF) tried to incorporate that later in their tenure, but at its core, WCW was more old-school. Longer, more technical, less bullshit. WCW incorporated the Cruiserweight division for smaller, faster, more technical, high-paced fighters. Basically the WEC for pro wrestling.
So when Vince McMahon, who had trained his loyal followers to despise WCW with every fiber of their being (with skits, imitators, invasions, etc...), trotted out a "WCW" match featuring Buff Bagwell vs. Booker T on his flagship show, Monday Night Raw, with "hated" WCW announcers and ref, could you blame the fans for shitting all over it? Vince cultivated this hatred, and now he expected people to pull a 180?
Needless to say, the match was shit upon. It wasn't good to begin with (Buff Bagwell looks and acts like Phil Baroni), but the culture that WWF fans had become accustomed to was changed and they didn't take to it.
Vince saw this, and after one match...one fucking match featuring a washed-up midcarder against a former champ, he scrapped the running seperate idea.
---------------------------
With his thoughts of running WCW and the WWF seperately down the toilet, he had the bright idea of incorporating the WCW wrestlers into WWF programming. To Vince's credit, he wasn't playing with a full deck. Wrestlers like Sting, Ric Flair, Scott Steiner, Kevin Nash, Goldberg, Scott Hall, and Rey Mysterio couldn't get out of their contracts. However, guys like Diamond Dallas Page, Booker T, Kronik, and Lance Storm (not to mention the ECW contingent, but that's for another day).
So Vince/Dana didn't have Overeem, Fedor, Diaz, and Melendez at his disposal. What he did have were a lot of Werdums, Bigfoots, Hendos, Jacares, Feijos, Mos, Crushers, Aokis, Thomsons, Noonses, and Daleys. Booker T and DDP were tremendous fan favorites. DDP especially was the original "People's Champion". He was beloved by marks and smarks alike. Booker T was a multiple (5-time, 5-time, 5-time...) Heavyweight Champ.
Vince had the opportunity for countless WCW vs. WWF cards and invasion storylines. We FINALLY had the WCW vs. WWF matches we've been dreaming about and predicting for years! (sound familiar?) Especially once the likes of Flair and Sting and Steiner and Nash and Mysterio an.....
....but no.
-------------------------------
There's never been any question as to Dana White's admiration of Vince McMahon. He admired not only his business strategy, but his persona. During the height of the Attitude-era, Vince was the focal point. Look at your Twitter, who from the UFC has the most followers? Exactly. But the trait that stopped Vince McMahon from being a billionaire might be the same trait that stops Dana from being the same.
Pride.
Within four months, the "Invasion" was dead, and all the former WCW wrestlers were fed to WWF wrestlers in embarassing fashion. Vince's hatred of World Championship Wrestling blinded him to business.
Kronik, WCW Tag Team Champions, got in one offensive move in nine minutes against the makeshift Undertaker and Kane tag team in a barren and needy tag-team division, Booker T was beaten down at every turn, and maybe most embarassingly, Diamond Dallas Page, a man who has paid his dues something fierce, was the babyface of all babyfaces in WCW, was reduced to stalking The Undertaker's wife, who looks like Avril Lavigne + 20 years + chain smoking, when his wife at the time, was a fucking Playboy Playmate.
-----------------------------------
Just like that, the WCW invasion was done and the WWF reigned supreme. Neat. Vince's WWF won.
Oh, but he just forgot this one little part.
THEY WERE ALL YOUR WRESTLERS, VINCE!
Every single one of them were WWF employees! The problem that Vince McMahon had, was that instead of building up the likes of a Dallas Page, or a Booker T, or a Rob Van Dam, or a Sandman, or the WCW's Cruiserweight division, was that he had such pure HATRED for WCW and ECW that he let his pride get in the way of good business. He had built this WWF name, goddammit, and he was just gonna show how much better they were! So they ran roughshod over everything that wasn't WWF. WWF wrestlers squashed everyone else out of Vince's spite.
Good for you, Vince. Shitty for business.
---------------------------------------------
Dana White has a choice. Yes, I realize he can't script endings like pro wrestling, but what he can do is bury Strikeforce fighters. Put guys like Dan Henderson, Nick Diaz, Gilbert Melendez, Fedor on the undercard just to show them who's boss. Same as Vince, it's a dick-swinging competition.
Or...
He can do what Vince never did. Keep Strikeforce running and running strong. Get them on CBS, build them up with a Zuffa banner, pimp their stars on UFC broadcasts, run Strikeforce TUF, and when the time is right, just as WWF vs. WCW should have been years worth of events, UFC vs. Strikeforce could be what that never was. Just think what a UFC vs. Strikeforce PPV would do today? Multiply that after two years of build.
Dana, this is your chance to do what Vince never could. Don't let your pride get in the way of business. UFC vs. Strikeforce is big business and I hope you'll learn from your mentor's mistakes.

I enjoy the new one because it talks about all the legit heat he had backstage when he first came over. There is a little too much Fozzy shit in the book imo.

That said, awesome storytelling on his WWE run. Best chapter was “Benoit”.

I’ve actually noticed similar parallels with MMA and professional wrestling. I always felt that WWE=UFC, WCW=Strikeforce, and ECW=Bellator (especially since ECW was known to be hemorrhaging money, and Bellator is reportedly hemorrhaging money as well. Both are loved by their respective hardcore fans). These three MMA orgs were run similarly to what I felt were their professional wrestling counterparts.

That's actually a really smart idea.

Any other ideas to parallel professional wrestling and MMA/the UFC? My friend is convinced that besides one being real and one being fake, the only other difference with WWE and the UFC is the booking in that the UFC books fights correctly, and WWE does not book their matches correctly. In WWE, the guys on top tend to want to keep their top spots and don’t want to “job” to younger wrestlers, but in MMA, that just cannot happen.
Check out the C&D Channel on YouTube for MMA reviews, predictions, analysis, and other MMA related content.
It's a fine line.
One of the first things I though about when this merger was announced is how the fight bookings are going to look. If the UFC wants to make a point they can absolutely do it. Make Nick Diaz fight GSP, Fitch, Koscheck, and Pierce in a row and you can flush him for going 0-4. Give him Condit, Hardy, Swick, Lytle, and Serra and he’ll put on awesome fights and I’d favor him to win all of them.
BV hit on this point in the article. They are Zuffa fighters now. You can make money together and everybody will go home happy. Wouldn’t you want see KJ Noons fight Guillard, Winner, Stephens, and Siver? I’d pay the UFC for those fights, but they won’t make a nickel by putting him on the undercard against Lowe and Lentz.
Lets hope good business prevails.

There is a real difference between how McMahon views talent and how Dana seems to view fighters. For Vince McMahon it’s about guys who he created vs guys who came in pre-packaged with other personas. Lots of guys that came over from the WCW have had long prosperous careers in the WWE too but for the most part they had to be fit into that WWE “style” (that’s something that Jericho talks about too) before they were truly accepted. That just doesn’t exist in MMA because the organizations build off match ups not story-lines and personas. Winning and losing is what keeps your job in MMA not whether you can pull off being the “King of the Ring” or not. Bookings can be an issue but if you win in Zuffa then Zuffa is going to keep you, that just doesn’t exist in pro wrestling because the wrestlers don’t decide who is going to win.
Now where the Strikeforce guys may have problems is the one’s who don’t have star qualities but then that is the same for guys in the UFC with Jon Fitch personalities too. Overeem’s going to be a star no matter where he goes but no matter how many fights Werdum wins he just isn’t(although he seems to have a good personality). Guys who either don’t have that “it” factor and guys who have already washed out of the UFC are the ones who may have to worry but that’s no different than it was in Zuffa before the Strikeforce purchase.

I completely disagree. ECW had awesome actual wrestling matches on almost ever card. History may have forgotten some of the best workers because they never made it big in WWE/WCW, but for pure wrestling, the only product that’s ever touched it is ROH…and even that’s sort of a spotfest.

While I agree it would be great for SF to remain as is, promoting great fights that are not the most meaningful in pure sporting terms. I don’t think this is Zuffa’s aim despite what Danna White says.
They wish to use SF as a means to stop a competitor emerging and tie up virtually all mid and upper level fighters. SF will mop up Dream fighters, WVR fighters and marketable US based fighters. With competition unable to form a divisions worth of decent fights the UFC will eventually be the only place to go for elite talent
SF will block a company moving onto Showtime for another 2 years making it difficult for competition to get exposure beyond HDTV.
The UFC will tie up the talented staff at SF, the only company that has come close to a profitable competitor on a national level in recent years. With this added staff Zuffa can run shows week in week out. For example the current UFC staff run a PPV, former WEC staff run a Fight Night and former SF staff run a third show in the month. Zuffa will be in a position to saturate the market nationally, while being the forerunner internationally.
So while I agree that it would be nice for SF to remain, I believe the UFC will fold SF just like they did with the WEC. I disagree that the motive will be a hatred of SF fighters or pride like the motives of McMahon. The motive will be the expansion of the UFC brand into the undisputed big leagues of MMA.

I can understad where you are drawing the parralles from but they are different products
WWE can make any match they won’t they just had to come up with a half decent story line and boom feud. It didn’t matter really that O we are finally going to see Booker T v HHH or whom ever. What matters is the narrative they set up.
in UFC its all about the fights. If they don’t give us the fans relevant fights we want to see than we most likely and hopefully will not buy there product. With the eventual UFC Strikeforce absorption the relevant fights to be made will become very very possible and we will demand them.
A Strikeforce absorption is a good thing.
Nice post btw

I've never watched pro wrestling in my life
Frankly, I think it is quite stupid. But this was a very well written, well thought out, accessible article for even a guy who had never heard of the WCW before. Good job and rec’d.
Thank you!
Like I said before, I was trying to appeal to the hardcores and the non-fan. Very happy to hear that.

Another non-pro wrestling fan here, still rec'd.
I stopped watching pro wrestling in the early 90s, kinda started watching again casually (no PPVs) when Stone Cold got big and WCW had the NWO thing (pre-WCW buyout) and then stopped again but that’s about it. I know Luke Thomas’s head is probably exploding as he reads this but it makes perfect sense to me.
Haven't seen any pro wrestling since I was a kid,
way back before fun was invented, but this is a very well done post. Fwiw, I too fear Dana’s pride will get in the way of his business sense and this deal goes sideways.
Even integrating their top guys and then using it as a feeder league would be a better use than simply killing it off.

Thanks very much. I agree, I’d love to see SF stick around in some respects. It does have its own little feel and niche that I’ve grown kinda fond of.

The only real flaw in this analogy...
Is that when Vince bought WCW, they were a massive company with a large fanbase and big time star power. Granted, they were in a downward spiral at that point due to poor booking and the immense success of the WWF… but essentially, to the world at large outside of pro wrestling fandom, the WWF and WCW were seen as (at least close to) equals.
With the UFC and Strikeforce, it’s different. Strikeforce has nowhere near the visibility or popularity of the UFC, and their platform to create and maintain stars is severely limited in comparison to what the UFC is capable of. Even if you funneled a bunch of money to the organization and pimped them on UFC broadcasts non-stop, I still doubt their popularity would even remotely compare to the UFC’s after a year or two.
In theory, I like the idea of a “UFC vs. Strikeforce” angle to promote super-fights… but I think that your assertion that it would be better for business to do it down the road after putting a ton of the UFC’s resources behind promoting the Strikeforce brand is flawed. Given the way that the UFC is now perceived as being the entire sport of MMA to most fans, there’s no way that any of the UFC’s existing fanbase would buy this little group of mostly unknown fighters as a legitimate threat to the UFC.
What’s more, if Strikeforce fighters actually won the majority of these fights, how would that look? It would weaken the UFC brand. Granted, Zuffa might own Strikeforce now, but their priority is always going to be protecting the UFC. The UFC is their meal ticket, not Strikeforce. Even if this strategy would be good for promoting Strikeforce (and I’m sure it would be), Zuffa will never go through with it if it comes at the expense of the UFC’s public image.
Just put them all in the UFC as soon as possible (after doing the bare minimum to fulfill the Showtime requirements) and make everyone fight everyone. No Goldberg’s undefeated streak, no Diamond Dallas Page stalking the Undertaker’s wife, just fights fights fights and more fights.

Greatest fanpost ive read yet on BE. Thanks for that. It was great to understand how things went down after pro wrestlings merger.
I wish death upon no one, but not all deserve to live.
Thanks a ton dude, glad you liked it so much.

neva seen any wrestling
but dig ur post… full of piss n vinegar… n i like it!
so thanks… and yes, lets hope DW and Zuff’E’Nuff crew don’t just slowly let all the air out of SF, it would be a waste… i guess the one thing I didn’t get from your post was if there was a Coker equivalent left to oversee WCW in any way and whther or not they retained any kind of power (which given what little I understand of VM, I would guess to be no) in which case – therein lies another possible dimension of difference btn ufc/sf and wwf/wcw… if coker stays ‘in the mix’…
also beams me up to see how many hardcore BE headz r old core wrestling fans…

Much appreciated.
Good question, and you’re right. There was no representative of WCW after WWF bought them. Not that it mattered, the leadership of WCW was a revolving door towards the end anyway.

This was...
Gold.
and maybe most embarassingly, Diamond Dallas Page, a man who has paid his dues something fierce, was the babyface of all babyfaces in WCW, was reduced to stalking The Undertaker’s wife, who looks like Avril Lavigne + 20 years + chain smoking, when his wife at the time, was a fucking Playboy Playmate.
Kimberly Page…. sooooo hot, want to touch the hiney.
Also, you gotta remember that WCW fans HATED WWF/E so once those guys went north, the fans weren’t likely to follow.

Thanks and you are correct. I know people that haven’t watched a day of wrestling since WCW went away.

Troof.
A guy my mom dated back in the day loved, EFFING loved WCW. Flew out to Vegas every time they were there (Vegas+wrestling was too much for him to resist, I guess).
He would go to the occassional WM but his heart was in Atlanta.

Props on the amazing article.
I am such a mark for anything pro wrestling related from pre- 2005 or so. It was really interesting to see the parallels you drew and made me think of how Lorenzo Fertitta compared his business model to WWE’s on Fighting Words.
Also, I enjoyed some aspects of ECW, like the Malenko/Benoit/Guerrero trio. I would have loved to see those guys in the cage. I didn’t like Sabu and kind of loved seeing him get owned constantly.

Excellent, glad you enjoyed.
What was your beef with Sabu?

I mean, I guess I just didn’t particularly find the way he wrestled to be technically pleasing. I know he trained under some of the best, but, as you could see by who I enjoyed in ECW, I didn’t have a lot of love for the guys who were loved for doing all that crazy shit.

I hated the fact
That Vince let his bias decide the fate of WCW. I grew up an NWA/WCW fan. When I first saw the WWF I thought it was garbage. Of course I grew to like it but NWA/WCW was always the best to me. I am hoping beyond hope that they keep Strikeforce up and running and that they do a “Superbowl” type show once a year and a special “cross promotional” match once a quarter or something like that. It won’t happen but one can dream.
Great post btw.

It won’t happen
At least you guys won’t be terribly disappointed when it doesn’t.

just a few things
strikeforce is more of an ecw than a wcw, not that big of a league compared to the ufc
wcw ran themselves 6 feet under before wwf purchased them
