Big Week in MMA: UFC, Strikeforce and Bellator All Running Shows in 3 Day Span

Bellator's Bjorn Rebney launches his first season on MTV2 on Saturday. Photo via Sherdog.

It's not often that fans get to see all three of America's biggest MMA promotions all plying their trade inside one three-day period.

While it's obvious that the UFC is the big dog in the pack -- honestly it's practically in a different pack -- both Strikeforce and Bellator have achieved what old-time MMA fans would have regarded as the holy grail -- alliances with major cable networks and regular broadcasting schedules.

The UFC has gotten so big they're able to ply their wares on two networks while occasionally dallying with a third. In addition to their marriage to Spike TV, they will be running their third Ultimate Fight Night card on Versus tonight. Then just for grins they run the odd prelim, like UFC 127 on Ion TV's broadcast network.

Of course ratings on ION TV were down a tad this Saturday, MMA Weekly reports:

The UFC 127: Penn vs. Fitch preliminary bouts that aired live on Ion Television on Saturday night drew an average of 714,000 viewers, according to industry sources. That number is a slight drop from UFC 125, which averaged 829,000 viewers for the broadcast network.

Dave Meltzer adds some analysis at The Wrestling Observer (subscription required):

The prelims on Ion, which was a commercial-free UFC time buy, did a 0.43 rating and 714,000 viewers. Three weeks earlier on Spike, the same prelims show, which had commercial interruptions, did a 1.24 rating and 2.0 million viewers, which was record setting numbers. That seems to indicate Spike is important to UFC because most of its regular Countdown audience did not bother to watch on Ion, either because they didn't know or some other reason. The prior time, with literally no notice, that UFC put prelims on Ion, they did 829,000 viewers, so this was down, even with more lead time. It appears 700,000 to 850,000 is the number of people who are either the Ion bare minimum prime time viewers combined with the amount of UFC fans who knew about the show. The other350,000 to 1.25 million more likely simply didn't know about it as their prime source of info on watching UFC is seeing whatever is advertised while watching Spike during the week (such as UFC, or other programming on the station including TNA), and there were no ads for the Ion airings on Spike. A typical Ion prime time show will be 1,260,000 viewers, but it's a network that hardly matches the UFC demographic well

So the UFC seems to be learning that Spike is hard to replace for airing prelims. Tonight they'll continue their experiment with the Versus network. The first UFC on Versus did 1.24 million viewers, but the second UFN on Versus dropped 20% and got 990,000 viewers.  Tonight's show will be a critical test of the UFC and Versus relationship.

And the UFC/Versus relationship matters because Comcast owns Versus and now NBC. If the UFC can deliver massive ratings on Versus that makes them much more attractive as an acquisition for NBC/Comcast when the UFC's deal with Spike TV expires at the end of 2011.

For reference, the WEC's best ever show on Versus -- WEC 34: Faber vs Pulver -- got 1.54 million viewers. The UFC needs to show growth over their first two broadcasts on Versus tonight.

The UFC is also continuing to invest in international expansion. UFC international boss Marshall Zelaznik told MMA Junkie that the UFC's Swedish debut is "very likely" for November. Scandinavia has long been an MMA hotbed and while Sweden's not the biggest market, it's a very wealthy one, as are Norway, Denmark and not-quite Scandinavian but oh so close Finland.  With Strikeforce's aborted attempt to expand into Japan ending in fiasco, the UFC's ability to take their show on the road remains an ace hole card for the sport's leading promotion.

Up next is Bellator with their 35th event and their third welterweight tournament. Mike Chiappetta  did a great summary of Bellator's ever-improving TV deals:

A three-year broadcast deal in hand, Rebney can now spend more time focusing on the actual product, something that has already drawn raves from many fans for exciting fights.

In year one of Bellator, there was no U.S. television deal, with English-language fights only available online. In year two, Fox Sports Net aired fights nationwide, but start times were unpredictable, often delayed and pre-empted in major markets.

In crafting a deal with MTV2, though, Rebney built in a clause that guarantees nationwide, Saturday night primetime live broadcasts each week, with start times flexible based upon what's going on in the rest of the MMA world. So on a night Bellator is the only national event, it will air at 9 p.m. ET. But if the UFC has a show on the same night, it will move up to as early as 7 p.m. ET.

People have been very critical of Bellator's deal with MTV2 because they are skeptical that MTV2 can deliver the MMA demographic. Looking at the Saturday line-up on the network I see a block of Pros vs Joes featuring MMA fighters followed by a block of Bully Beatdown featuring Jason 'Mayhem' Miller. That looks like a good block of intro programming to me.

Here's Bellator's Bjorn Rebney talking to the Wall Street Journal. Note that he claims Bellator is currently breaking even and expects to be profitable within 9 months (HT MMA Payout):

It's notable that while Bellator plans to get out of the way of the UFC, they are not showing the same respect to Strikeforce. Saturday's Bellator show will start at 10 p.m. ET directly going up against Strikeforce's Fejao vs Henderson on Showtime.

That makes sense on one level as Showtime's pay cable status will leave a lot of MMA fans out in the cold, but practically I think it could ding Bellator's ratings a tiny bit as many MMA hardcore fans will chose Strikeforce instead.

But Strikeforce, ah Strikeforce. Not only have they bolluxed up their Heavyweight tourny, but they aren't even the only MMA promotion on Showtime. From the Wrestling Observer:

Showtime and M-1 Global announced the first show of their new relationship, a live show on 3/25 from the Constant Center in Norfolk that will air at 11 p.m., which is the Strikeforce Challengers show time slot. That will mean three straight weekends of MMA on Showtime since a Challengers show is on 4/1 and a major Strikeforce show is on 4/9. The M-1 Global contract with Showtime, which was known to be part of the negotiations M-1 had with the network to get Fedor Emelianenko on Showtime, is believed to be for multiple shows. ... It is interesting seeing Showtime go with a promotion other than Strikeforce, and they are using Mauro Ranallo and Pat Miletich as announcers, or the same crew that is used for Strikeforce.

Strikeforce's entry is Rafael 'Feijao' Cavalcante vs Dan Henderson. Feijao may be the champ, but it's Henderson they're counting on to draw eyeballs. Unfortunately for Henderson they're not giving him anything in the way of a supporting cast as far as casual fan appeal. No Herschel Walker. No Gina Carano. Nothing. Henderson vs Sobral did a fairly weak peak of 465,000 viewers in December per MMA Junkie

For comparison, Diaz vs Cyborg (featuring Herschel Walker) peaked with 853,000 viewers in January and Fedor vs Silva broke 1 million viewers in February.

I don't expect Henderson will come anywhere close to those numbers on Saturday.

Matt Bishop talked about what this show means for Strikeforce's momentum a while back:

The real key is going to be the March 5 show in Columbus, Ohio featuring a Rafael Cavalcante light-heavyweight title defense against Dan Henderson. Henderson's last show, headlining against Renato Sobral in December, averaged 341,000 viewers. Cavalcante's last fight, against "King Mo" Lawal in August, averaged 367,000 viewers. If these two have a good ratings outing on Showtime, the proof will be in the pudding. That's momentum.

If not, well, the return of the heavyweight tournament will only be a month later and, in theory, should do good numbers considering the success of (February's) show.

Unfortunately for Strikeforce, postponing the second installment of the heavyweight tournament means that the April show isn't a guaranteed ratings success and could show, once again, that casual fans care more for their novelty bouts than their championship fights.

I’m glad I don’t have to study the trends, implications, or attempt to predict how Event A or B will bode for Promotion B. It’s all f*cking good.

I’m not going to cry if any of the promotions get 300 – 500k PPV buys. The fights were awesome!

I tend to be biased towards strikers . . . exciting strikers.

I think Bellator

Is MTV Networks insurance policy should the UFC bolt for greener pastures. If Comcast (Versus, USA, NBC), Fox Entertainment (FX, Fox) or Disney (ESPN, ABC) offer Zuffa a better deal I expect them to take it. The UFC looks a lot more professional when Goldberg is promoting the NHL than that piece of shit “Mansers”.

Hardcore MMA fans picking Strikeforce?

Im sorry, but with the exception of the Heavyweight Tourney that Bellator did last season, Its Bellator in a head to head. The exciting fights from Bellator are FAR better!

by fitefan on Mar 3, 2011 1:45 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

bellator way better than strikeforce.

As this season is coming to an end, as the ncaa wrestling tournament is right around the corner, pretty much all of the top d-1 Wrestlers hate on strikeforce and would rather fight bellator. And I tell the boys I coach here who have plans in moving on what a joke of a promotion strikeforce is. Bellator is way more reliable and just the better promotion. And I’ve been a coach in the big ten for over 8 years now, and the big ten is the pinnacle of d-1 wrestling, and strikeforce is quickly ruining its reputation and status with the USAs top pool of fighters (this is a fact not my opinion, cause ill be damned if you see any Illinois Wrestlers go to strikeforce). Strikeforce needs to disappear.

MTV2 is not HD for me, this sucks. I also hate supporting a network that pollutes the airwaves so much. That’s saying something, considering the drivel that is on Spike. In the end, I support MMA and will watch, but definitely on DVR.

by BJJDenver on Mar 3, 2011 1:24 PM EST reply actions

The non HD MTV2 factor really is weak.

Watching SF live, Bellator on DVR

I don’t have a 3D TV, and I abhor the idea of wearing Buddy Holly glasses in my own living room, but if they can pull of 3D on versus, Verizon better step it’s game up and get MTV2 in HD, and soon.

I'm Watching Bellator

By watching Bellator you can see the top prospects that will come later to the UFC. Bellator is in a great position to become the number one minor league organization. By not competing with the UFC they crawled into the position SF should have held.

Ehh

I don’t see it that way. Bellator has gangster contracts that make it really hard for their guys to leave for the UFC (or anywhere).

You’re right Rebney is a shrewd lawyer and have been dealing with athletes contracts for a long time but he can’t hold his fighters forever. By the way where does the lawsuit between the UFC and Bellator stand?

by Coeman on Mar 3, 2011 1:48 PM EST up reply actions

mmm...maybe.

While I’m not sure what the fighters that are truly coming up will face, my friend that was just released by the UFC, was told that if he fought for SF or Bellator, that he would not be brought back. He is young and up coming, but still a WEC/UFC vet.

by BJJDenver on Mar 4, 2011 11:01 AM EST up reply actions

A few questions for Nate:

- If showing growth on Versus is so crucial, why hasn’t the UFC put together a stacked card on free t.v., sacrificing short term revenue from not making the card a PPV for long-term profit by this growth generating interest among networks?

- I notice that even though there’s a Strikeforce card on Sat., Bellator is still starting at 9. Is this a reflection of Bellator’s opinion that this isn’t a “big” Strikeforce card, or will they only defer starting time to UFC events?

by John Danaher's Hair on Mar 3, 2011 1:29 PM EST reply actions

If Bellator gets their asses kicked then they will get out of the way of SF as well.

well they still get paid out of the PPV buys

and I think the Fertittas are still thinking quick buck. It’s who they are. They invest as well but they line their own pockets first.

Follow me on Twitter @KidNate

by Nate Wilcox on Mar 3, 2011 1:50 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t buy that.

The Fertittas have always played the long game when it comes to MMA. They invested in the UFC for five years before they started to see a light at the end of the tunnel, they subsidized the WEC for three years trying to turn that into something, and they continue to invest in international markets that are nowhere near as profitable as their domestic market. Those are not the actions of guys looking to make a quick buck. They could have made a lot more money in the short term by killing off the WEC and scrapping the international expansion plans.

IMO, they haven’t invested marketable talent in the Versus shows because it is not a priority … yet. Comcast/NBC have much bigger fish to fry at the moment and the UFC is probably not even on their radar, so why bother wasting premium talent while they are stuck in limbo. When it comes time to make their case to the powers that be at the network, I suspect Zuffa will stack a card and put on a marketing blitzkrieg. Until then, they are probably just looking for a slow build while the corporate suits iron out the future of the network.

of have they gone really light on the promotion for this card? Maybe it’s just because it’s been overshadowed by the HW GP announcements, but I haven’t seen any ads on regular t.v. (as I did for the GP round 1) for this card- have you?

by John Danaher's Hair on Mar 3, 2011 1:35 PM EST up reply actions

I have only seen a few on a couple MMA forums, but for Strikeforce to be a more recognized MMA company than Bellator, it has failed to advertise this card. Every so often on MTV i continue to see Bellator tournament ads, but nothing from Strikeforce on Showtime. I think they are putting all their effort for the other grandprix cards believing that they are the easiest to gain success/ratings. These other cards seem to be just buffers filling up space.

I wish death upon no one, but not all deserve to live.

by spookon3 on Mar 3, 2011 1:42 PM EST up reply actions

I agree.

I olive in NYC, and there were Stikeforce ads on sports talk radio here- which the UFC doesn’t even do. My line about SF always seems to hold true- it’s a good product, that could be great, but they can’t get out of their own way. Even with their mis-management, it’s still a cool org, but it could be SO MUCH BETTER.

by John Danaher's Hair on Mar 3, 2011 1:44 PM EST up reply actions

Definitely, the CBS cards are always the best produced. I really think Showtime is an awful channel to host sports on. The production continues to be the same, ive seen no improvement at all. But, i still watch their cards because Zuffa will hold a monopoly over all of MMA is Strikeforce doesnt survive.

I wish death upon no one, but not all deserve to live.

a monopoly is not good for anyone. It’s a great time to be an MMA fan, and on the nights of stacked UFC cards, there are going to be some epic MMA Saturdays. High levelfighting from 7-12:30??!! Sign me up.

the UFC numbers for this card wont be better then the past two.

This isnt a big stacked event.

IF UFC wanted to show Comcast/NBC they are the big time and can get big ratings they would stack a PPV worthy type card on Versus and promote it heavily for a month or two and then get big numbers.

I’m talking either a title fight, Rampage, a Mir, Randy, shit like that, a card that maybe has a FW title fight on it, Rampage vs Randy or something, Mir, a big card that is what would get big numbers on Versus.

Kampmann/Diego and CB/Munoz isnt gonna draw a ton of fans, they might do a mill but I wouldnt be shocked if this was the lowest rated Versus show. the other two had jones vs Vera, JDS vs Gonzaga, Jones vs Vladdy. which Jones is the draw since he was hyped as the new star in the sport.

While this is a good card top to bottom it doesnt have any real star power so dont expect ratings to be that good.

UFC should do a big Versus card.

Like something like this

Sonnen/Bisping
Tito/Bader
Kos/Condit
Sherk/Melvin
Jorgensen/Mighty Mouse

Something like that would be a killer Versus card, good fights, some names but really only Sonnen/Bisping is a fight that is PPV co or main event worthy, others def could be main card fights on PPV but this would be a great Versus card that probably does 2 mill or more viewers easy on Versus with the right push and the trash talking between Bisping/Sonnen.

Thats the kind of card they need to show Comcast/NBC they can get big ratings.

by Aldo27 on Mar 3, 2011 1:41 PM EST reply actions

If their hesistant about STACKING a free card, all they need to do is put a PPV main event on their usual free t.v. card

Fitch vs. Penn would have been the perfect kind of fight for a free t.v. main. I know that B.J.‘s a big PPV draw, but they have to sacrifice a few PPV fights to generate network interest. But, they’ve been doing pretty good on their own, so I’m sure that they have their own reasons for not making such obvious moves.

by John Danaher's Hair on Mar 3, 2011 1:49 PM EST up reply actions

It just goes to show how the biggest MMA promotion company in the word, the UFC, still has trouble to acquiring enough talent. Theres no room to put contenders on non PPV cards. This past weekend displayed it with UFC 127 having a journey man who never fought in any major MMA company in the main card. It also had Kyle Noke vs Chris Camozii in the card, being Australia doesnt mean you are worthy enough as fighter to be put on an Australia fight main event.

I wish death upon no one, but not all deserve to live.

by spookon3 on Mar 3, 2011 2:11 PM EST up reply actions

that was par for the course for UFC overseas shows. Ebersole only got the fight because Condit got hurt and he was already in Aus, and willing to take the fight on what? 2-3 weeks notice? The UFC has plenty of talent- too much they’d tell you as they’re still trimming the roster from the WEC infusion. Look at 128 and 129- those are STACKED cards- injuries will always happen (look at tonight- no Cacareco, no Falcao- this was originally a higher quality than typical free UFCs), but the UFC is entering a period where they’ll be able to put on stacked cards one after the other. They have 7 weight classes now- that’s a potential 28 title fights (in reality, probably around 15-20) a year- that is CRAZY.

by John Danaher's Hair on Mar 3, 2011 2:26 PM EST up reply actions

Thats a good point, i didnt take into account that it was a overseas card. But, every major name is either booked to fight or preparing to find out his opponent. Im just saying that for such a prestiguos promotion they should be able to fill an injury on a card. It wasnt only this fight, but in UFC125 aswell. Carwin vs Nelson was the co-main event. But Carwin got injured and there was no other fight to put. And coincidentally Dana White announced that WEC was merging into the UFC. I believe that the Carwin/Nelson fight removal from the card was a MAJOR catalyst into having the WEC merge with the UFC. There was no other popular fight to be maid so they settled with Aldo vs Grispi. They merged two companies due to an injury and no other talent being available.

I wish death upon no one, but not all deserve to live.

I don't see any reason it will do more than

25% better than Hendo vs Feijao.
Melendez vs Kawajiri — great great great fight. zero zero zero draw
Diaz vs Daley — that will also be a great fight but without Herschel Walker it won’t break 800K. Strikeforce/Showtime has done a great job of training fans to expect great fights from Diaz but he’s still not a huge draw.

I think with the news of Strikeforce and Dream’s (or whatever it ends up being) “cooperating” for the April 9th card and the supposedly surprising good ppv sales of Fedor vs Bigfoot in Japan goes a long way in explaining Coker’s obsession with putting a show on in Japan. They (RE or FEG) need him and they’re willing to give him a cut of their market if he helps them stay afloat.

Strikeforce seems unable to create momentum or maintain momentum at the same time. They created something great with the HWGP, but failed to maintain their momentum. With this upcoming April 9th card, they anounce the fights so late, there’s not as much time to create or build any momentum.
