Jake Shields to Train With Chael Sonnen During UFC 129 Prep for GSP
As he prepares for his UFC 129 main-event fight with Georges St. Pierre, former EliteXC welterweight champion and former Strikeforce middleweight champion Jake Shields will spend some time training with Chael Sonnen. Jake Shields comments on Spike TV:
"So far things are going great, camp's going good. We just had Court Mcgee out here ... you've got Chael Sonnen coming out this week, things are going good. I'm pushing, in great shape. I'm just excited, I'm ready to go."
"I'm excited; this is a fight I've wanted for years. I've been champ of multiple other shows, that's all great and I'm proud of that, but UFC has always been the show that I wanted to be at. These other titles are great, but my eye has always been on the UFC and Georges St. Pierre, he's had the belt for the last 3 or 4 years. He's the guy I've wanted to fight and to finally have this opportunity, I couldn't be more excited. I can't just wait to go out there and get it on next month."
"It's going to be an all out war; you know Georges is a great fighter. He's one of the best out there without a doubt, I think it's going to be an all out fight. It's probably going to go into the later rounds, but I see myself wearing him down and submitting him at some point."

that could be the creepiest pic I'll see all day
Conducting an experiment on knocking people out in particular ways would be unethical.
how is GSP's sprawling compared to his take downs?
I think he’s going to have to try to keep some of the fight standing with Shields
GSP did very well against Hughes at a time where Hughes was putting everyone on their backs. After that, I don’t think anyone’s really tried to bring GSP to the floor that often. Shields definitely will try, and that’ll be interesting.
Here are the takedown attempts made on GSP in the UFC:
Koscheck II: 1/4
Hardy: 0/0
Alves: 0/0
Penn II: 0/1
Fitch: 0/6
Serra II: 0/0
Hughes III: 0/3
Koscheck I: 1/4
Serra: 0/0
Hughes II: 0/6
Penn I: 1/1
Sherk: 0/3
Trigg: 0/1
Miller: 1/6
Hughes I: 2/7
Hieron: 0/3
Karo: 0/2
I’ve highlighted the Hughes fights, and the Fitch fight. It’s clear those guys wanted to drag the fight to the floor, and could only do it 2 times out of a combined 22 times. Pretty impressive TDD.

And to the flip side, here are the takedown attempts GSP did to those same fighters:
Koscheck II: 4/9
Hardy: 11/11
Alves: 10/12
Penn II: 4/7
Fitch: 7/9
Serra II: 4/5
Hughes III: 3/3
Koscheck I: 2/2
Serra: 0/1
Hughes II: 1/1
Penn I: 4/5
Sherk: 3/4
Trigg: 1/1
Miller: 5/5
Hughes I: 1/1
Hieron: 0/1
Karo: 6/8
Overall: 66/85.
Is it possible GSP is both the best at taking his opponents down while being the best at not being taken down by his opponents? It seems likely just by looking at these numbers.

The nonstatistical part
you can’t keep track of what he did with each takedown. But we know that he maintains position and scores lots of shots.
The other side of that is he rarely gets held out of position if it does happen (which it basically doesn’t).
Thanks for the breakdown on the stats. I’m reminded of what GSP said about the fight that same night – he said that he knows what Jake is going to do, but Jake doesn’t know what he’s going to do. It should be fairly obvious Shields is going to try and take him down – the question is will we see GSP take him down like he’s done to everybody else or will we see him really make a go of keeping the fight on the feet and trying to knock him out?
I think GSP will keep it on the feet as much as possible as he knows taking Shields down is entering his territory. By keeping it on the feet, he can land his jabs all night long like he did to Koscheck. But I have very little hope of him actually knocking Shields out though… If Henderson couldn’t do it, I doubt GSP can.
I more or less agree…though I’d add that after the first round of their fight, Hendo never really got another chance to land a solid hit on Jake’s chin again which might have done the trick. As I really don’t expect Jake to have as much as luck in taking and keeping GSP down as he did against Hendo, then St. Pierre should have more time to go for a KO/TKO finish.
Kos has gone a combined 2 for 8 in their two fights, while Fitch went 0 for 5. Dude’s sure not a free takedown.
And when taken down, GSP doesn’t stay on his back very long. I think I heard Goldberg say that GSP had only been on his back less than a minute over his career during his Alves match. That came up with Alves was able to reverse GSP late in their fight when he had injured his groin. Despite this, he made his way back up to his feet pretty soon.
While GSP has spent little time on his back in his career, both times Kos was able to take him down he kept him there easily until the end of the round.

Distance based point striking
He’s also been training Karate since he was a kid
Conducting an experiment on knocking people out in particular ways would be unethical.
I don't know the differences
Can you elaborate?
Conducting an experiment on knocking people out in particular ways would be unethical.
Shotokan competition disallows strikes to the legs and face. When someone scores with a technique, the fight is paused, the points awarded, and the fight restarted (like a fencing competition).
Kyukushin is sort of like if Muay Thai didn’t let you punch your opponent in the face or wear gloves. Knees and kicks to the face are legal, just not punches.
Thats for competition, my post is more about how they are in everyday reality for schools and what not.

thanks Tedd
I still think your names Todd when I first read it. Every time.
Like I said to Kefka – training a kick based art seems to me like GSP would be focusing on his controlling distance on the feet.
Conducting an experiment on knocking people out in particular ways would be unethical.
Both kefka and tedd said it was kicks and knees only?
Did I miss something?

Weird, karate isn't as well known as I thought.
You can’t use them to the face of your opponent in competition, in kung fu either for example. It doesn’t mean you can’t punch the body in tourneys or that you don’t train punches to the face, you do, it’s even a very important part of karate, you hit with every parts of your hand, I’m sure you’ve seen karateka hit the makiwara in movies or something.

np, a lot of matches there an kick throw at all, they just keep punching each other in the mid section till one of them falls and can’t take it anymore, its quite absurd. Though not all matches all like this, its just sad that quite a few are.

any bro hugs?

That’s karate man, there are rules, no bro hug, no ass grabing for wrestling sake, no spooning of any sort.

I've seen a lot of videos karate dojos in Japan
that look exactly like what you just described.
"Run and tweet THAT, homeboy."
I get that a lot
I’ve taken to writing my name in all capital letters in real life. Makes things easier :)
Kyokoshin is full contact with no gloves and no punches to the face. You have to deal with some tought sparring to get your black belt, with Shotokan you don’t have to deal with any real sparring in a lot of schools. In short some one with a Kyokoshin Black best is a badass you don’t want to mess with, while someone with a Shotokan Black belt might be a badass or might not. Shotokan like so many other TMM is filled with frauds and bad schools that simply do not prepare you for any kind of realistic encounter. While a Kyo school is much more likely to be legit(though just like with BJJ there are still bad schools or simply ok ones, but there are far less total frauds/McDojos).
I am free because I choose to be so-Me
Thanks bro
I guess the point fighting was way off then. But considering the stress on kicks I’d say the training is intended to help with his distancing.
Conducting an experiment on knocking people out in particular ways would be unethical.
Its not TKD they will throw a lot of punchs, but only to the body for competitions and sparring. (thought I am sure some schools do some stuff invoving the head and punches, but its not the norm).
Most Kyokoshin matches I have seen, pretty much amount to a mindless brawl with some kicks, distancing and other subtletys do not come in to play, including defense of any sort, check out stuff on your tube.

I got something else for you, how is training anything gonna help GSP destroy shield more than he is already going to? I like shield, I was defending him when everyone called him a boring lay n prayer. But he will have nothing for GSP, he can’t stand with him, he will take heavu shots before he manages to take him down, it will be very hard hold him down, and I also believe he can’t sub him, because it’s the only thing GSP will have to worry about on the ground.

shields is going to wear down GSP?
one of them has tireless cardio. one gasses. shields seems to be mixing himself and GSP up.
shields isnt the kind of wrestler who will give gsp fits, but chael is. maybe shields will pick up some stuff, but even if he can get it to the floor once or twice i cant really see him being effective given gsp is preparing a lot with roger gracie.
even though he has virtually no standup, shields is a tough bastard and this will probably play out like anderson vs leites sadly. hopefully im wrong and gsp lights him up (only way its exciting)
Shields has never had a history of cardio problems before his Kampmann fight, and that fight was his first in a few years at WW and definitely not helped by the fact that he had back problems during his training camp. I’m giving Shields a pass for that performance. With that said, GSP has unmatched cardio. But with that said, again, Shields will be bigger and heavier than GSP, so it is possible that he wears him down. We’ll see. Incredible match-up. Can’t wait!!
But with that said, again, Shields will be bigger and heavier than GSP, so it is possible that he wears him down.
Shields is taller by 2", but GSP will out weigh him in the cage and be significantly stronger.
Shields said before the Mayhem fight that he walks around in shape at around 185. GSP will be a leaner 190+ in the cage.

if fitch and sheilds ever fight i might have to do something drastic to distract myself from the pain of watching that fight…. like masturbate with sand paper…

then put them in a bowl and add milk.
yep, scabbios, that level of drastic.

odds of Chael getting subbed by Shields during training?
So let me get this straight: the WWE has gone from the powerful "Austin 3:16" to the dominant and iconic "Can you smell what the Rock is cooking?" all the way to... (cue baby voice) "You can't see me." Oh, believe me, we all can see you. A blind-folded, sleeping, stuck in the basement, Stevie Wonder can see your monkey ass. - The Rock

Jake Shields 4 or 5-1 dog and....
nobody giving Shields any chance against GSP. VCU 150-1 dog to make it to the Final Four. Even before VCU made the final 4, I still gave Jake Shields a better shot than any of GSP’s previous opponents. I think there is a good chance Shields pulls off this upset, if he can beat wrestlers like Hendo and Okami and strikers like Lawler and Condit and BJJ artists like Mayhem Miller, I don’t know why people think he has no chance at all.
Because he's one-dimensional
And if GSP takes it away the fight’s over.
"If I had a dollar for every brain you don't have, I'd have one dollar." - Squidward Tentacles
Jake Shields is not 1 Dimensional
how is great wrestling and jitz 1 Dimensional?
His stand up game probably is what GSP is going to target though
Because this fight will go exactly like the Koschek fight if GSP wants it too
Shields may be more submission savvy than kos, but he certainly doesn’t have the take down prowess. GSP keeps this fight standing and wins. He may even let Shields back up instead of following him down if he gets a particularly good strike in.
If he's training td defense he's pretty dumb
And GSP would be ill advised to go for takedowns. If your opponent only looks impressive standing up on bully beatdown I would prefer to stand…

More and more I'm thinking Shields will find a way to win here
Like he has done in his last 15 fights.
I believe he is working with Askren in addition to Sonnen.
Sonnen is a huge MW who comes into a fight over 205 pounds. He and Askren are a killer combination to be working with.
Add in the fact that Shields was already a guy who has outgrappled 185-ers, the fact that he has a great chin, and outside of the Kampmann fight(which is the exception, not the norm) he has shown the ability to go for 5 rounds(even after getting blasted in the first by Hendo)
And the crazy thing is, even gassed in the Kampmann fight, Shields consistently out-grappled him and reversed him in every round.
I think a lot of people are going to be surprised by Shields in this fight…he isn’t going to be like Koscheck who gets jabbed and eventually just seems to stop even trying for takedowns. Shields ia guy who will drive forward until he gets his hands locked around you and will find a way to get you down no matter what.
