Judo Chop: 'Korean Zombie' Chan Sung Jung Lands Eddie Bravo's Twister at UFC Fight Night 24
When Chan Sung Jung, aka "the Korean Zombie" forced Leonard Garcia to tap to a spine lock called "the twister" at UFC Fight Night 24 it was the first time the submission had been used to finish a fight in UFC history.
The unusual move earned Jung a $55,000 Submission of the Night bonus.
He talked about the move after the fight, per Kevin Iole:
"It's something I saw a long time ago on the Internet on video," Jung said. "It's one of Eddie Bravo's moves. It's something I practiced because it looks fun and I do it quite a bit in practice. I have always told people I was going to try it sometime in competition. I wanted to do it in the UFC and I was able to, finally."
While it was a first for the UFC, it's not the first time the move has been used to finish a fight in MMA.
Gerald Strebendt landed what is generally considered to be the first twister finish in MMA history when he tapped Dave Elliot with one in 2004. Jason Chambers tapped Billy Stamp with a twister in 2005. The Chambers-Stamp video is in the full entry. (HT BE reader stingrza). Jason Day tapped out Trevor Stewardson with a twister in 2009, video in the full entry.
Gal's Guide to MMA points out that Shayna Baszler used the twister to beat Keiko Tamai at EliteXC in 2008. And here at Bloody Elbow we have written up Shuichiro Katsumura using a twister variation called the exorcist at ZST 20 in May 2009.
But that does nothing to diminish the awesomeness of Jung's twister on Saturday.
The move is associated with rubber guard guru Eddie Bravo who wrote an entire book on it, called Mastering the Twister. Here's a little bit from my review of that book:
The twister of the title is a neck crank submission Bravo brought to jiu jitsu from wrestling (video) where it's known as the guillotine. As a beginning jiu jitsu student under Jean Jacques Machado, Bravo built his entire game around this submission since he'd mastered it as a wrestler and few of his jiu jitsu opponents were aware of it.
I expect to see more twisters in the future as more fighters get frustrated trying to get the rear naked choke and getting nowhere. It's also the kind of move that fighters with strong amateur wrestling backgrounds should be comfortable with.
In the full entry we'll look at some gifs and KJ Gould will break down Jung's application of the hold, plus videos of almost every other application of the twister in MMA history and the Gracie Breakdown and Eddie Bravo's break down of the move.
SBN coverage of UFC Fight Night 24: Phil Davis vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira
Gifs by BE reader Grappo (except the big giant one by KJ Gould).
Take it away K.J.:
The Twister aka The Wrestler's Guillotine is possibly one of the oldest holds in the history of grappling. There's a famous statue of Greek Pankration that has been oft replicated where one fighter is in the process of setting up the other from the cross body leg-ride.
It's still used in wrestling today but not to the same neck twisting degree due to the modern rules which take safety into consideration. A wrestler would use the Guillotine to create legal discomfort with the intention of getting both of his opponents shoulder blades on to the mat to score a pin-fall.
Eddie Bravo took the Guillotine from wrestling and modified and arguably popularised it for use in submission grappling where his master Jean Jacques Machado came up with the nickname 'Twister'.
Chang Sung Jung finishes it perfectly. From the back he transitions from having both hooks in and fighting for wrist control to removing a hook and quickly figure-fouring the other hook to lock up a single-leg control. Jung also part-grapevines Garcia's left leg with his right giving Jung a level of control similar to that of a 'lockdown' half-guard.
Jung maintains upper body control by using his right arm as an under-hook while he adjusts himself into a better position for the hold. Garcia then straightens his arm out and effectively gives Jung his arm likely unaware that Jung was setting him up for the 'Twister'. Jung puts his left arm in front of Garcia's right arm and uses that to get his whole head in front of Garcia's arm. Jung is able to quickly wrap his arms around Garcia's head in a gable grip, but more importantly makes sure there is no space between his chest and Garcia's face. This is important in both the wrestling version and the submission version - if there was still space and you could see Garcia's shoulder it's not on tight enough to really turn the head and coax a pin or a tap.
With the head locked up, Jung is able to drive his hips forward with the 'lockdown' type control to prevent Garcia turning into him and relieving the pressure. This pull-push effect of the head and hip control means you can get the most pressure out of the hold and Garcia is forced to tap

The most satisfying part of this twister
Was seeing Garcia tap to it. When I saw this, I immediately jumped up and screamed “Judo chop, bitches!” my girlfriend gave me that “you idiot” look she always does. Great chop guys.

No shit,
I don’t post on here nearly as much as a lot of the regulars, and when I do, it often comes out retarded, but I’m on this website countless times a day. It’s the homepage on my laptop and my phone.
Sometimes I’ll talk to my girlfriend about a stupid post that I made on here, or a stupid argument someone is making, and midway through i’ll look at her to see that, “Why are you telling me this?” face. …..she doesn’t understand me like BE does….

Other MMA Twisters...
Just for the sake of trying to compile the most complete list: Both Jason Chambers and Gerald Strebendt have hit twisters in pro MMA fights. Smaller shows (I want to say Chambers’ was a RotR show) I believe, both many years ago, and last I checked both were on YouTube.
There must be others…
Yep.
I think Strebendt was the first to hit it in an MMA fight. It was a British event if I remember correctly.

Eddie bravo orgasmed when he saw this lol.
This really was more of an Eddie import more so than the rubber guard. Bj penn and Phil migliarese have been working the “rubber guard” longer than Eddie. IMHO.
The twister…. That shit is so brutal. It makes my neck hurt just watching it. That and the crucifix neck crank are cervical disc poppers. Ouch.

Another way to explain this
Imagine if Jung is taking Garcia’s back and putting his left hook in. Instead of putting the right hook in he rolls Garcia to his side, Jung’s back. He then tucks Garcia’s right arm under his head and pulls the head across and his drives his hips forward.
That’s how I learned the position. You put the left hook in, roll them over, drive the arm behind your head and crank. Done, sir. Done.
Follow me on Twitter: @MMANation.
Thats close to how I learned it,
but i learned to place my head beneath the arm prior to the roll. Here is a pretty good video of what it looks like in a wrestling match.
the sound was off where i was watching this fight.
What did Rogan say when Zombie got the tap with it? Did he go all nuts?

Rogan nailed the call IMO.
As soon as Jung locked up the leg Rogan recognized the twister was on, and not 5 seconds later it was over.
Yeah Rogan recognized it immediately. One of his best moments imo

I think it’s more of one of those times when Rogan happened to be right. Not that he makes a lot of mistakes. He is very knowledgeable about grappling in general, but he is constantly looking to call out 10thPJJ moves above all else, which a lot of us find annoying, especially when these moves existed long before EB renamed them.
he was amazingly restrained, but on point
As soon as Jung pulled his hook, he said kind of incredulously “he looks like he’s setting up a twister…” (as if he wasn’t really sure that Zombie was actually doing it), then when Jung put the arm behind his head and grabbed the head he goes “HE IS! TWISTER! OHHHHHH!” then said “somewhere Eddie Bravo is smiling.” No one else would’ve called that the same way- also props to Tan Dan, for being right on top of it as soon as the setup progressed (though he may have just been looking for a clean break at the end of the round).

Conducting an experiment on knocking people out in particular ways would be unethical.
I'll ask a question I asked in the post-fight writeup
Is this more of a “pain” sub or an “injury” sub? It’s hard for me to tell from looking at it where the most pressure is being applied (neck, I assume?) and whether it just really hurts, or is likely to do serious injury absent a tap.
Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.
Pain, but it can seriously fuck your spine and perispinal musculature/ligaments up.

discs can get fucked up pretty bad ,possibly broken neck.
The pain makes you tap before that happens. There is a reason it hurts so bad , your body wants you to make it stop fast!

which is exactly what it's used fo rin wrestling...
the victim has to either withstand the pain or pin his shoulder blades to relieve the pressure.

It's both...
It goes from pain to injury fairly quickly, like most cranks. Having been caught in it, you feel it more in your spine (not neck area) than anything else.

It absolutely falls within the bounds of fair use
The problem is that fair use, while an accepted legal construct, is nowhere established in the copyright statutes. The other problem is that Google-YouTube did its own deals with the devil to keep from being sued to death that give copyright owners unreasonable power to shut down anything that they claim is infringing.

There hasn’t been a case yet that has gone to a judgement. Obey/Shepard Fairey filed a preemptive lawsuit against the AP for the usage of an AP photo for the Obama/HOPE poster. eBay has done the same thing. Basically all the big internet portals
that allow users to upload content, either for use (YouTube) or for sale (eBay) basically allow copyright holders to shut-down anything they like without just cause.
There’s no law requiring they do it, but they do it to buy themselves freedom from vexatious litigation.

Twisters are banned from some
Amateur level MMA and grappling competitions, but I’ve yet to see any pro-level mma or grappling ban the twister.
Twisters and spinal cranks/locks are banned across the board at IBJJF jiu jitsu events (i.e. the mundials, pans, ny open, chicago open, miami open etc etc).
GQ allows them still, Naga, and I think ADCC (not Abu Dhabi Pro).

Good info. I’m surprised that those techniques are allowed in MMA when they aren’t in jiu jitsu events.
To be fair you can’t do can openers in 90% of BJJ competitions, you can’t heel hook in the gi (EVER) unless there’s some bush league promotion out there allowing it. Knee reaping is almost always illegal unless it’s a no gi-submission comp.
There’s also rules on where you can and can’t grab, and some other rules too that MMA is ok with.

Do you have a GIF of where Chan Sung Jung
put in the legs. He already has a figure four on the legs in hte first GIF, and the legs are really the key to this move. The head crank is nice, but there are a few other options a person has once they get the leg ride in.
Does anyone know the seconds remaining in the round when Garcia tapped?
I'd change my name to Mr. Carrano.
Similar situation to when GSP tapped out to Hughes’s armbar also with a second left. As a fan, you figure they could’ve toughed it out for another second, but as a fighter who’s concentrating on preventing something from breaking, I’m not sure you know exactly how much time is left.
Even if you actually managed to hear the 10 second warning
it would have already felt like a year in the cage by the time the twister was in place
Conducting an experiment on knocking people out in particular ways would be unethical.
i would never judge
garcia’s a tough dude, if he tapped, i would have.
but i bet as a fighter you second guess yourself a bit.
thank you for this!
i had no idea what was happening.
i’m sure others have said this, but if you wonder why rogan ends up on top of “best commentator” polls, quick identification of things like this is a big part of the reason.
as much as i find goldberg’s enthusiasm appealling, and his cheerfully shilling and exageration as endearing as it is annoying, you wonder whether rogan would benefit from a real play by play man, specifically someone who has a little bit more striking knowledge. rogan isn’t bad at striking, but it’s not his forte (most complaints have to do with him calling the strking one-sidedly (for instance, machida/shogun I or barry/beltran).
anyway, thanks for the judo chop, really appreciate it.
not to discredit Rogan..
he is a brown belt and best friends with Eddie Bravo, who popularized this move. I’m sure this move has been done to him countless of times and that he has mastered it himself so if any commentator is equipped to identify it it’s him.
This is true
tho, in Rogan’s defense, he is actually pretty strong in his play-by-play when it comes to BJJ generally speaking. However, he’s not as strong concerning some other arts, specifically wrestling. For example, a wrestler is less likely to go sink in hooks when he has back control (a la Lesnar/Herring). In this situation, Rogan typically explains how the the controlling fighter should be going for hooks to gain back mount, without recognizing that riding the back can be equally dominant.
Conducting an experiment on knocking people out in particular ways would be unethical.

how is that discrediting Rogan?
No other announcer would have called that- look at the EliteXC footage above- Mauro and Quadros didn’t know what it was. No matter why he knows it, it was one of Rogan’s finest moments.

Cause I wanted to clarify his bjj background
and simultaneously not come off as though he should 100% be expected to recognize the setup for the twister? I thought it was pretty obvious? Regarding bjj, I find Rogan to be top notch in his commentary.

It’s usually at 3PM Pacific/6PM Eastern but looks like they’re running a little late.
