UFC Fight Night 24 Bonuses: 'Korean Zombie' Jung, Hendricks, McDonald vs Figueroa
The UFC always makes the big win pay off and last night's UFC Fight Night 24 was no exception. 24 men fought on the card, but only four received public post fight awards.
- Chan Sung Jung, aka "The Korean Zombie" won Submission of the Night $55,000
Jung caught Leonard Garcia in "the twister" in the second round of their rematch. He credited watching Eddie Bravo videos on YouTube with teaching him the move. It was the first time the neck crank had been used to get the submission in UFC history although it's been used in MMA before. - Johny Hendricks won Knock Out of the Night, $55,000
Welterweight Hendricks fought T.J. Waldburger in one of only three bouts not to make either the Spike TV or Facebook broadcasts from the event. Hendricks KO'd Waldburger with a vicious left hook under two minutes into their bout. - Michael McDonald and Edwin Figueroa each take home $55,000 for the Fight of the Night
The two bantamweights put on the most back-and-forth fight of the evening and did well for themselves by winning the Fight of the Night.
14,212 fans with a live gate of $1,182,850

I think Hendricks has to be the fighter to get the least love from the UFC. He performs and usually wins, but can’t even get on damn FB.
They need to start showing unaired prelims on the Facebook broadcast.
There were two solid 10-minute slots of time where they just showed the crowd.

That Twister must be hell. Does it originate from wrestling? never seen it in BJJ.
Yup
It’s called the guillotine in wrestling, and it’s executed from the “crossbody” position. You push your hips out (into the opponent’s) and pull his neck in with your arms and his leg in with your legs. It can be so excruciating that some wrestlers will pin themselves to make it end. It is very hard to get out of if locked in tight, so you can be stuck there for a while, suffering.

Here's one almost as bad

Push the legs apart, and the opponent feels like his groin is ripping apart.

So now you’re telling me that Eddie Bravo not only invented BJJ, but also wrestling? Dude is amazing.
who said anything about bravo 'inventing' bjj?
or wrestling for that matter!?

I can't wait for the Judo Chop.
That looked profoundly unpleasant. One thing though, is it more of a pain sub than an injury sub? It doesn’t look like it’s likely to permanently injure anything.

In the YT video, no. In KZ's version, yes.
The point of the HS version is to force the shoulders to the mat. You’ll notice in the HS version there’s no twisting pressure on the neck or head – it’s simply captured and held. It’s a great move against less-experienced opponents, who often make the mistake of reaching back from bottom position. Many HS wrestlers will actually lower their head to bait an opponent into reaching back.
In KZ’s version, he doesn’t encircle the head for a traditional headlock, he places this inside of his forearm across Garcia’s jawline and then locks his hands and cranks Garcia’s neck into his own shoulder. That puts a lot of torque on the spine with the accompanying leg lock, as well the neck being twisted. Had Garcia known there was just a second left, he might have gutted it out, but I doubt seriously he could have last 5 more seconds.

Brutal
Thanks for the explanation. So what would be the outcome of it going too long? Neck/back injury?

Not sure, to be honest
I’ve only ever show the HS version. I’m guessing it’s more of a pain submission, but whenever you torque the back and neck, obviously, you could end up with some serious injuries.

I'm actually kinda surprised no one's pulled it off in UeFC before
With so many wrestlers in UFC now, someone surely used that move in HS from top position, and baited a kid into reaching back. Against someone with no wrestling experience, you’d get someone to bite, I’d think. One I saw him hit it, I thought it was cool, but honestly was shocked when Rogan said no one had used it in UFC before.

If you're into bjj
Check out some of the 10th planet stuff. A lot of it has funky names but can really help to diversify your game. It gets you thinking of things besides the basics to watch out for/ catch people with

WEC Never Die! McDonald, Zombie and Hendricks are all former WEC fighers.
A great showing overall by the WEC guys. Mackens looked really sharp – O.K. Bruce Leroy isn’t top competiton, but I’m glad he’s back on the winning track. His fight against Swanson was amazing – was afraid they would cut him after 3 straight losses.

Good Call
This is what the lower weight classes need to become stars. Korean Zombie was cheered to like a star now if can speak a little English
I agree with the bonuses. McDonald vs. Figoeara was just amazing for two rounds. Agreed, they were completely gassed by Rd. 3, but I’m still glad they got the bonus. Just a battle. They gave it their all.

I’ll remember Rd. 2 of McDonald Figo for a very long time. That’s a round for the ages. That alone seals the bonus.

I hate it when they give bonuses to terrible fighters.

Give some young guys, guys who the UFC wants to become names
some spending cash, some recognition, get their names out there with a talking point
“This guy won fight of the night in his last outing Joe…”
I love it when their share the wealth a little bit, and get some guys who actually need the buzz, some buzz

Jung's sub was awesome on so many levels
Never happened in the UFC cage before and there was only about a second left on the clock when Garcia tapped. Jung was winning on the feet, but I was already starting to dread the inevitable Garcia split decision win. It was thoroughly satisfying to see Garcia tap and Jung avenge the robbery that was their first fight.
Now let’s see Garcia-Phan 2.
Well that would be a better fight, but I’m hoping to see more guys who underservedly lost to Garcia get their revenge.
This should have been a reply to milk72 above

So does Hendricks get any of his bonus or does it all go to his team?
by RoB_ex on Mar 27, 2011 1:16 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
probably to his team
he’s salaried, right?
Looks like his benefactors are getting some return on their investment
