From NCAA Wrestling To MMA: Bubba Jenkins Scouting Report
Everyone who has more than a passing interest in MMA should know how integral Wrestling is to the sport and last week's NCAA Division 1 Men's Wrestling Championship also showed a crossover in the type of fans attending. Among the shirts worn by fans wanting to rep their their University teams you were just as likely to see Tapout and Affliction apparel as you were to see PSU Nittany Lions and Iowa Hawkeyes jerseys. Strikeforce Champion and all around MMA legend Dan Henderson was there to do autograph signings as well as promote his Clinch Gear brand, which is in the process of putting together a USA Wrestling line.
Even some of the top MMA gyms were scouting for potential prospects, most notably American Top Team's Ricardo Liborio scoping the talent in Philly on the Friday before heading to UFC 128 in Newark on the Saturday.
With that in mind I'm going to look at some of the competitors of last week and make my picks on who I think can transition well into an MMA career.
First up is Arizona State's Bubba Jenkins who many believe pulled off the upset of the tournament in pinning Penn State's David Taylor.
Jenkins is a no brainer as he's made it clear he plans to head into MMA just as recently as his post match press conference last Saturday (video after the jump). He won the championship at 157lbs so a career at 155lbs Lightweight makes sense, but he has wrestled as low as 149lbs so a drop to Featherweight might not be totally out of the question either. However I think he looks solid for a Lightweight and the extra 10lbs drop could be a drawback more than a benefit.
More importantly he has good connections to begin an MMA career. He was coached for wrestling under Bellator Welterweight Champion, 2x NCAA Champion and 2008 Olympian Ben Askren. Jenkins claims he has fast hands and fast feet and can't wait to bring his Sun Devil Tough drive to the cage. I get the feeling he may want to bring a Sprawl'n'Brawl style to the cage but as long as he's with Askren and picking up submission skills in a similar fashion there's hope he can develop into a well rounded MMA fighter. I'd like to think he might eventually turn into a better version of Melvin Guillard, only without getting into the same sort of trouble or the penchant for placing himself into fight ending situations that favour his opponent. Of course until we see him fight we've no idea how he'll look, so I'm just spitballing at this point.
Handily, Jenkins also knows how to talk and is an extroverted personality which is incredibly valuable in the game of fight promotion especially when interest in the two top lightweights Gray Maynard and Frankie Edgar has been hindered by a perceived lack of charisma.

I wonder how he'll run his career?
in the current industry dynamic.
pick up a few fights at the super local level then what? some HDNet caliber promotion? go to Bellator for the “easy money” like Askren did?

Depends what camp he gets with. Like Weidman, he could be persuaded heavily by camp members who fought in the UFC already. If he doesn’t have an environment like that, he’ll likely take Askren and Warren’s route for the dollars.

ASU turns out a lot of guys into MMA
Iowa State really hasn’t under Cael Sanderson, so we haven’t seen many elite MMA guys come out of Cael Sandersons style of wrestling thus far
Davis and even Eric Bradley came out of Sunderland at PSU
ASU seems to be a feeder at this point to MMA with Cain, Bader, Dolloway, Hendo, etc, the list there goes on – it is almost a minor league amateur mma program at this point and seems to be drawing interest because of that
Cael's not at ISU anymore.

no but he hasn’t had enough time at PSU to turn out a crop of wrestlers post grad
ISU he had plenty of time, now they have a former UFC guy running that team
I wouldn’t say Cael has had plenty of time to churn out mixed martial artists from PSU yet.. If anything, he is just now getting his own guys wrestling at Penn State. However, I would definitely keep an eye out for Ed Ruth in the future.. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in mma not long after he graduates.

Disregard the first part of that comment..
I definitely misread your comment… But hopefully PSU can become like ASU in regards to being an MMA factory

That's what he's saying
When he was at Iowa he didn’t turn out any prospects for MMA. He may not at PSU either and Jenkins left before Cael had had any real influence on his wrestling.
Jenkins was a transfer from Penn St, so in addition to being coached by Shawn Bunch and Askren at ASU, he was also coached by Cael Sanderson for a year.

well he and Sanderson aren’t on good terms, not so sure how much coaching he really got from Cael, he chose to sitout a year and transfer
You could see how angry Cael was after Jenkins beat his boy (Taylor)
I’m sure Cael was pissed. Just wanted to point out that Jenkins had several coaches at 2 different schools in college.

Just a question – how could Jenkins’ win be “the upset of the tournament?”
According to the commentators, Jenkins was the #4 seed and Taylor was the #3 seed. I wouldn’t consider the #4 guy beating #3 a big upset.
The guy he beat
was undefeated 38-0 and super-hyped red-shirt freshman…plus Jenkins pinned him with a good move. One of the only matches to end in a pin I think too.

Taylor was undefeated and was probably the most heralded recruit of the last decade, all the top 3 guys at that weight were undefeated and any of them could have been 1, 2, or 3 and it wouldn’t have been a surprise.
Taylor was a lot of peoples pick to win, he is a methodical wrestler, similar to Sanderson, and with Sanderson as his coach, most expected him to win, not get pinned by the guy that he replaced and transfered out, because Cael didn’t want him at Penn State
Anyone named Bubba Jenkins belongs in MMA.
In all seriousness, I hope he joins a good camp if he wants to take MMA seriously; similar to what you had mentioned, I hope he follows more in Weidman’s footsteps than Askren or Joe Warren, even though there’s nothing wrong with that.
I’d like to see him in LW — he looks like a huge and solid LW, too. I think he’d be able to make featherweight, but wrestlers usually cut as much weight as they can bear and keep their strength, so I think LW is a better home for him than FW.
He also understands marketing
And had people wearing these around the Wells Fargo Center and Philly:

I would love more articles like this
A stream of guys announced their intention to do MMA after last year, I hope it happens again. I’m pumped for Bubba and hope he ends up at Alpha Male.
Jordan Burroghs is incredible, if he bypasses INTL and goes to mma, he could be a force at 155 or more than likely 170
Darion Caldwell got hurt but theres another guy who could be outstanding at 145

I would take a look at Caldwell too, his style, athleticism, and attitude set up well for mma
Guy was out due to injury, but he beat Brent Metcalf for the title two years ago and watch the video from that, and he is tailor made for MMA
Jon Reader, given the final and he is graduating as champion, is another guy to take a look at too
last year had way more guys that I think, will make an impact at the INTL level and MMA than this years class
I remember back in high school
This was huge news and he was casted in a bad light http://hamptonroads.com/2006/02/jenkins-looks-fighting-his-expulsion-cox-high
