Fedor Emelianenko to Return to Strikeforce in July
The long-time top-heavyweight in MMA, Fedor Emelianenko, will make his return to action for Strikeforce in July. The Russian star lost his second straight fight to Antonio Silva in February after submitting to Fabricio Werdum in 69 seconds back in June 2010.
Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker spoke to Sherdog:
"Fedor's gonna fight sometime in July. It's probably toward the end of July or mid-July, but we have fights with Fedor that we're gonna honor and continue forward. We're gonna do the co-branding exercise that we do with M-1 every time we do fights with them."
"The opponent has not been chosen, but I think having Fedor involved close to the tournament as an alternate is definitely a possibility," he added.
Fedor answered questions at the premiere of his new action movie The Salamander Key in Moscow (translation via Lowkick.com):
"This Sunday I'll fly out to Holland to have a two-week training camp. Then, I'll return back home to Stariy Oskol to continue my preparations. I'm going to fight this summer. I still don't know who will be my opponent, but it's something currently in works. I didn't train abroad since 2005. We have a really good relationship with Muay Thai coaches in Holland, so I'm really looking forward to this training camp.
I would like to thank everyone for their support. But at the end it's God's will, and we have to accept it as it is. I will continue to compete, train hard and do everything in my power to get a victory. Reporter: You are not retiring? Fedor: No way."
Possible opponents for Fedor include the alternates in the Strikeforce heavyweight tournament: Shane del Rosario and Chad Griggs. He could also rematch Andrei Arlovski, who also lost in the first round of the tournament or face Lavar Johnson or Gian Villante, who lost in their alternate matches.

Yeah, I'm just waiting for someone from M-1 to say "well, the fight with Arlovski if obviously the fight that fans want"
Dat’s some boo shit if it happens.
Why would M-1 want a rematch with Arlovski? That makes no sense to me, he already beat him so he has zero to gain by fighting him again. If he wins, big deal he already beat him, if he loses then it just reinforces the belief by some that Fedor is done.

it’s an easy fight to win, that’s probably what they are looking for now. They are probably the people most hurt by the Zuffa/SF deal. There’s no way an extension with SF will be close to as lucrative as the current contract, so they need to find a way to get Fedor a good fight contract or to convince someone new to give M1 a bunch of money for his next fights, if there are any.

I'm guessing Chad Griggs

Maybe Fedor is taking Bas up on his offer?

Del Rosario has some serious defensive liabilities
And Fedor is savvy enough to exploit them. I’d much rather see him slug it out with Griggs.

I remember
right around when that pic was taken Bas was saying that it would be a good idea for him to go train some muai thai in Holland. Can we finally do Bisping Vs Fedor on Brock’s shoulders?

Randy win or lose after Machida.
Fedor needs to train more wrasslin tho. Isn’t he going to be training with Vinny too.
Food goes in here
Fedor vs, Couture
Catchweight at either 215 or 220. Only fight that I’m interested in for Fedor.

I doubt Randy would even ask for the catchweight; it’s not like he’s unwilling to fight bigger guys.
I’d also take Hendo\Fedor, but that would definitely need to be at a catchweight.
No reason to make the Hendo fight at a CW, he said he would fight at HW and its not like Fedor dropping 10-15 pounds of fat is going to help Hendo in any way.

good idea... if it's in strikeforce.
would be a good way to get some ufc-only fans to pay attention to the fighters over there, before the merger.

I had thought that if Zuffa puts the finals of the HWGP on PPV, Randy/Fedor would be a great fight for that card to sell it to the casual fans who wouldn’t be overly familiar with the any of the finalists.

Hendo, Mousasi, Mo, Cormier (yes!), or Del Rosario all work for me.
Sick feeling it will be AA though…

On please, don’t put Arlovski in the cage with him or anyone else for that matter.

Is this his last fight on his contract?
its sad that I don’t really care.
I guess a couture fight would be a fantasy just for nostalgia reasons
any top 5 SF LHW would be a great fight

What do people
mean when they say “not another Arlovski fight”? Because Fedors people wouldnt want it? Arlovski beat fedor in the boxing in their first meeting, until he through that ridiculous flying knee. I think that Arlovski has a good chance of winning a rematch if he just stays composed og patient.

Not really, he never landed anything clean on fedor. All he was winning was “ring control”

Arlovski could probably get knocked out with a jab
That’s why.

To get the count up … I was thinking the same thing … low posts for a Fedor story …
Fedor training in holland is good news
But surely you need longer than 2 fucking weeks?
What happened to Fedor facing the loser of Reem/Werdum at the semis?
Happy to see he is training outside the homeland but the last two fights he was beaten on the ground. That’s where he needs work. Not Muay Thai.

Fedor vs Chad Griggs….. it’s like a throwback to the Pride days.
Fedor vs Randy would be interesting,
I can’t imagine they’ll book something like this. There is absolutely no upside for Fedor from such a fight.
He’s expected to crush someone like Griggs. If he doesn’t, god forbid even lose, all hell will break lose.
I’d love to see him fight Randy. But I doubt it will happen.

it's cool that he's training in Holland
but he really needs to train some BJJ or some wrestling – perhaps even both.
i don’t think his Sambo is enough on the ground anymore.

It may be "God's Will"...
…but it’s Fedor’s free-will choice to train differently and get better management. It’s nice to have faith to fall back on but faith and FATE are ugly bedfellows.

Totally was not expecting to see Roy Batty and Mr. Blonde show up in some random Russian movie. I guess Rutger Hauer and Michael Madsen both like to pay their rent.

This is in Russian, but
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6aKpn_Uq6bU
Have a look even if you don’t speak Russian. The fight scenes are interesting. And Fedor actually looks entertained and happy during the filming. Fedor has struck me as borderline depressed recently, but seeing this makes me feel better about his mental state. I don’t think his heart is in fighting anymore though. Btw, the producer of the film is the same guy who is behind M-1 – Sergey Matvienko, the son of the governor of St. Petersburg, Russia. The film looks like total shit though.
