Weird Alves/Story is on the undercard and not Struve

Can’t really argue it though. Struve is on a little run and Browne is undefeated. Plus the UFC loves their terrible HW division. At least Alves/Story is going to be on TV.

It's smart IMO

Alves/ Story is all but guaranteed to be a high paced, action packed fight. Good way to give both guys exposure, and great lead in to the PPV.

I really think they’re using some of their flashier talent now that they’re doing televised prelims to showcase the paperview. So you may see a less linear lineup of talent from top to bottom of a card. Instead they give a little talent bump for the spike or FB fights, typically with matchups that favor a standup fight or flashy BJJ (usually with a less known BJJ phenom cutting his teath in the octagon).

Damn shame that dude is sitting on the undercard.

Potential contender and he’s on the dark card? So glad I get to see Travis Browne and perennial disappointment Stefan Struve instead.

Yes, I’m probably going to do this every card. Get over it. Urijah Bieber appears to be dead so someone needs to do it.

Struve didn’t disappoint against McCorkle, neither did he against Morecraft. Those were two great wins. Say what you want about Struve, but he’s rarely in a boring fight. He’s either on one end of a beatdown, or the other. Either way, he’s not boring.

Against Morecraft

he was on both sides

by Chris Hall on Mar 23, 2011 7:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Sure, and that’s fine. Nobody expects fighters to dominate fights from start to finish (well except for GSP because he’s so good). But tell me that the Struve/Morecraft was a boring fight, or that it wasn’t a great comeback win for Struve. It certainly was both.

by Shnak on Mar 23, 2011 9:09 AM EDT up reply actions

I get the feeling we're rarely going to agree on anything.

Going life and death with Morecraft, Stojnic, Buentello, etc. does nothing for me. Struve is exciting, sure. I love watching him fight. The difference is Johnson/Barao are exciting AND potential title contenders (not too far off in the future either) and Struve/Browne are probably not cracking the top ten anytime soon, even in the shallow HW division. Exciting < exciting/relevant.

I agree, he shouldn’t sit there. But it’s understandable that they placed the other fights over it. I don’t care for either heavyweight fight on the card, but the UFC seems to be in love with them. They think Struve might become a playa – hard to argue when your division is that weak – and they won’t throw Frank Mir down. Both Spike fights are amazing. And Barao doesn’t have a name.
But I’d prefer if they put fights like Mighty Mouse v Barao on televised portions of fight nights instead of hiding them away on undercards of PPVs. These guys need exposure and Mighty Mouse is sure to shine.

Slightly less psyched about the actual fight. I suspect Page goes to a decision due to not taking Hamma seriously and in the post fight says that he’s tough a bunch of times, makes a joke about bad breath, and changes the subject.

Hamill's best wins at 205 are either Jardine or Boetsch

excepting the Jones DQ, for obvious reasons. Rampage is top three in the history of MMA for strength of schedule and won a lot more than he lost.

I think a lot of people will convince themselves that this fight is more competitive than it really is. Rampage should win this handily.

I just really like Hamill to use the Rashad gameplan of cage clinching and grinding him out. If they separate, Page has an awesome shot to KO him, no doubt. Hamill winning is just really a gut feeling here.

Major difference:

Rashad is better at mixing up striking and wrestling, is much more of a threat on the feet, and is much quicker than Hamill. I think Matt implementing a Rashad gameplan is a great way for him to get himself hurt or KO’d because he’s not going to be able to close the distance as quickly as Evans did.

This card is fucking stacked

The only thing holding it back from being my card of the year (on paper, at least) is that Thiago Silva was replaced by Hamill. That fight woulda put this baby over the top. Also, Alves/Story should be flipped with Struve/Browne, as others have mentioned.

Which makes it kind of strange choice for Spike, since those are supposed to lure people into buying the PPV.

But I guess they couldn’t have him untelevised and it had to go somewhere.

Yep. I think they've moved beyond showing familiar fighters from TUF

They’re just going to air whatever could be a slobberknocker. How else would you explain Brian Foster vs. Sean Pierson getting on the next prelim show?

Same here

Think he’s got a damn good chance of doing it too. Imo Pickett’s the UK’s best chance of UFC gold by a long way right now. Not saying i’d necessarily pick him over Cruz, but he’s got a much better chance than any other brit does against the champ of their weight class

This is a crazy card in terms of fights with divisional relevance. Every fighter scheduled to appear on the PPV or Spike is top 25. 9 are top 10, and 5 of those are top 5, including #1 versus #2 in what is arguably the most stacked division in the sport.

I know. Now that Zuffa is in control, I wonder how many fights it will be before we get to see Nick Diaz tested against a wrestler, like his brother is any time he wins a few fights in a row.

Didn’t this card originally have Thiago Silva fighting Rampage and Phil Davis fighting Matt Hamil?

by Jahbulon on Mar 22, 2011 11:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Hamill/Davis was supposed to be for UFC 129

Then it went to Davis/Brilz when Hamill was moved to the Rampage bout, then Matyushenko/Brilz for 129 when Davis was moved to this weekend’s card against Lil Nog.

UFC cards are getting better this year

3 fights at the top of the card between top ten or 15 opponents (at least two of which are relative toss-ups), and all 3 featuring guys who have headlined multiple pay-per-views in the past. Wasn’t too long ago that Rampage-Hammil would have been saved to headline on its own.

Lots of great match-ups as of late… and I was worried about an over-saturation of fights, but I just can’t get enough.

Great Spike fights. Both of them are way more interesting than the heavyweight fights placed on the PPV. But the UFC loves their heavyweights, so I’m not surprised.
Hope we see Mighty Mouse in some shape or form though. Did someone see Renan Barao fight before? He fought 2 times in WEC and only lost his pro debut in 2005. Has a truly amazing record. If he’s as good as his record shows he might give Mighty Mouse a war. Need to see that.

my 2 cents (worth less than two actual cents)

im not sure what to make of this card. i order them all without question because some cards that look suspect deliver in a big way. and most of the stacked cards get overhyped because of the talent on them, and while still being good cards, fall short of the level we built them to.

but what worries me is that the fight im most excited to see on this one is edgar v maynard. those are words i never thought i’d say. my fingers had spasmic fits just trying to type those letters in that order

don’t be afraid saying this. Edgar and Maynard just had one of the most epic fights in MMA history. Hard to achieve that again, but after such a performance I’d be excited if the PPV had no other fights on them.

thats exactly my point

i find it hard to believe we will see another fight like that between them. infact i expect it to look like maynard v edgar 1, with the same outcome. rest of the fights, while decent, are nto mind blowing.

like i said, this is in a way a good thing. it forces me to not expect much from the card, giving it a better chance to over deliver. cards like 126 were awesome cards, but under delivered to me because i just expected more from such a thick line up.

Jonny Bench called.

You’re right. high expectations often kill a card. It’s hard to live up to the hype. So it’s best to just go in there and have fun with it.
