TUF 14 Tryouts: Din Thomas Amongst the 400 Candidates

The Ultimate Fighter 14 tryouts took place yesterday at the Newark Liberty International Airport Marriott and there were some familiar faces among the prospects according to MMAJunkie.com. Season 14 will feature bantamweight and featherweight fighters for the first time:
Some 400 hopefuls turned out today to audition for the 14th season of "The Ultimate Fighter. Seen in the crowd were: UFC vet Din Thomas, who appeared on the show's fourth season, and WEC vets Wagnney Fabiano, Micah Miller and Ian McCall.

In what's become a customary part of the reality show's tryouts, lines ran long and time ran short for fighters to show their stuff. Each hopeful had a couple of minutes – tops – to grapple and strike before White, UFC matchmaker Joe Silva, and officials from Spike TV.

But there was added incentive to impress, at least during the grappling portion of the tryout: a cash bonus. White plunked down a stack of $100 bills at his table and offered a C-note to anyone who earned a tapout.

Ian McCall is an interesting name given his recent win over Jussier da Silva.

With the WEC gone, as well as Strikeforce and Dream also essentially gone, I wonder if we’ll see an increase in talent on TUF from now on? I would think so, including guys that were let go from the UFC but don’t want to go to lower tier organisations; they might prefer to work their way back into the UFC through a TUF season…

by Shnak on Mar 22, 2011 9:05 AM EDT reply actions

Also, this might even be more true if the UFC really does run 4 seasons of TUF at the same time… lots of guys will be able to gain entry to the UFC through TUF…

by Shnak on Mar 22, 2011 9:15 AM EDT up reply actions

Where is this coming from? (the running 4 at a time part)

by Chg91 on Mar 22, 2011 10:49 AM EDT up reply actions

Didn’t Dana said something like running 4 seasons of TUF this year? I thought he wanted to run on in the middle east somewhere (Israel?), Canada, US and a 4th one I’m forgetting.

by Shnak on Mar 22, 2011 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah, same here. and i hope he’s gonna fight at 145 (despite his connection to aldo). he looks rough at 135.

by woooburn on Mar 22, 2011 9:33 AM EDT up reply actions

Wagnney didn't mentioned he was cut

Wagnney is my BJJ coach’s instructor. He said that Wagnney said told him that the cut to 135 killed him and that he can’t do it anymore. He’s going to stay at 145. None of us at the gym knew he was going down for the TUF tryouts. I guess he may have been cut or he’s trying to reintroduce himself to the public and build his name through TUF. If he doesn’t get picked, that would be a travesty. He’s a 3rd degree BJJ BB, was the IFL featherweight champion, and was 4-2 in the WEC and his overall record is 14-3.

by StrangeD84 on Mar 22, 2011 9:53 AM EDT up reply actions

According to Mike Russell, he was cut after the grappling phase. At first I thought that was a joke, but apparently it’s not.

by zorba on Mar 22, 2011 10:00 AM EDT up reply actions

Seriously?

I guess Wagnney isn’t “interesting” enough. Who’s Mike Russell?

by StrangeD84 on Mar 22, 2011 10:38 AM EDT up reply actions

f that noise. hopefully they’ll let him get a win on a smaller show and then resign him straight away.

by woooburn on Mar 22, 2011 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions

He’s not listed on the UFC website but I don’t remember seeing anything about him being cut. Heck I thought I read an article a couple of weeks ago about him moving back to 145lbs and fighting this fall in the UFC.

Fighters like Kit Cope

Should be turned away at the door.

They should allow him on the show, only if he puts the sex-video of Gina Carano online.

Then kick him off for being a total tool…

If I were Dana, I’d tell Kit Cope that too.

dumb. some of my favorite TUF guys are people who wouldn’t have made it nowaways (lauzon, wiman, etc).

by woooburn on Mar 22, 2011 11:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Idk how it works haha

But look out for jesse brock and matt may. They did good at the TREEouts. Even got sub bonuses

My only advice is, you should win. - RolloTomasi

Here are a couple of updates that Robin Black (he brought down a couple of guys that he manages) posted on the Canadian forum on the UG:

“It seemed a common topic of conversation between all the high level pros was the mockery of all the “10 and 1 guys who beat a bunch of 3 and 7 guys” and the discussion that the “6 and 5 guys who fought 8 and 3 guys” are the guys who fucking deserve all the respect for stepping up.

The days of anyone believing the nonsense records of the pick-your-opponents-camps is over.

Those guys are now the butt of all the jokes."

“It was crazy how many legit supertalents were there. Din Thomas was there. We sat with a 9-0 guy who’s first win was over rob mccullogh. We talked to another guy who was a 7-0 viera bros brown belt from aka who was a training partner every day for fitch. Wagnney scared a lot of guys. Murderer’s row of guys at feather and bantam. I bet it was eye opening for young guys there. You couldn’t help but see how hard it’s gonna be for any kid to really make their mark in these weight divisions. And such a tiny percentage of reality show clowns. No Junie brownings or goofballs. No big pink fur coats anywhere.”

I’d be suprised if any of these guys (with an exception to Miller or McCall) make the show.

They have been in the UFC or WEC before, and have proven that they can’t cut it. Yet, they might be seasoned enough to beat some of the younger prospects that Zuffa wants on the show.

The UFC would have nothing to gain by Din Thomas winning TUF, then to go on and lose to mid card fighters right off the bat (cause they can’t really build him up slowley like they are doing with McGee)

guys don't count out Paul McVeigh, he's europes top bantamweight!

dudes definitley worth a shout! Dunno if he’l be own your US guys’ radar…

This show has run out of talent if we're still having UFC vets tryout to get back into the UFC

135 and 145 should be regular features for the next few seasons.

Don't allow it.

What does the UFC gain from having Din Thomas win TUF through some miracle?

not really that black & white though

big difference between a veteran like din thomas (who’s already been on the show, and probably shouldn’t be cast again), and a guy who’s currently ranked just outside the top ten in his weight class (fabiano).

by woooburn on Mar 22, 2011 11:36 AM EDT up reply actions

That is true, that’s why I’m saying the UFC should take it on a case-by-case basis rather than banning vets outright. I still think they’re long overdue for another comeback season.

Let's get naked and see who's stronger.

by OwMyArm on Mar 22, 2011 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Well Fabiano isn't a UFC vet

He never made the jump. I mean, he’s been extremely disappointing and freaking Mackens Semerzier subbed him but he’d be a good addition.

I totally agree in this case at least, a guy like Din is never going to make the UFC any cash and is going to sit at the lower-mid tier of his division for the rest of his UFC tenure. On the other hand, look at a guy like Danillo Villefort who was cut after one UFC fight. I could see the value in allowing a guy like him on.

Guys like Villefort should definitely get the chance

Thomas is redundant.

They need fewer veterans. In other words I would love to see TUF have guys we’d normally see on Strikeforce Challengers.

It’s so sad that Waggney feels he needs to lower himself to the point of being in TUF. He used to be the up and comer for me.
