I think this fight, opposed to what many think, is going to be a very hard one for Rampage. I've taken some time to re-watch a lot of Matt Hamill's fights and Rampage's as well. Rampage Jackson struggles with strong wrestlers, there is no getting around that. He struggled with Dan Henderson (even though he won) and got schooled over and over by Rashad Evans' takedown game. He likes guys that stand a trade with him - Liddell, Silva, Machida, Jardine. Rampage is a fighter that likes to stand in the pocket and crush people.
I think Matt Hamill is a very underrated fighters. People point to his fights with Rich Franklin, Jon Jones, and Michael Bisping as say he can't win the big fights (he did win against Jones, but he didn't beat him). Both those three are fast fighters who like to move around the cage with speed and have a lot of weapons on the feet. Franklin, Jones, and Bisping are all talented kickboxers who can really mix their striking up. Rampage is not that. He's a plodder, he likes to plant himself in the middle of the ring, cut it off from his opponent, and stalk. In his last two wins Hamill has shown real growth and the ability to take a lot. I know Keith Jardine isn't an elite fighter anymore, but he can bang with the best of them (ask Rampage) and Hamill beat him up. He did the same to Tito Ortiz.
I think Hamill's wrestling and power in both hands are going to give Rampage serious problems. It reminds me a lot of the Rampage-Evans fight, and it Hamill can get the takedowns that Evans did, I think he can do more because he's bigger and stronger than Rashad is.
A lot of people have poo-poo'd this fight, but I actually am quite excited to see how this goes. There is a lot on the line. If Rampage wins here he will finally get his title shot, that I have little doubt about. Hamill will finally get to prove if he can hang with the big boys, and Rampage's skillset matches his very well.
Don't count out the Hammer here. Rampage is a relatively un-evolved fighter, but he's got a deep gas tank, real power in both hands, and its super tough. Hamill's wrestling and power, too me, is the combination that beats Rampage Jackson if he can dictate the fight. If he decides to stand and trade with Rampage, he's in trouble. But if he can work both upstairs and downstairs, it could be the elixir for an upset.
