UFC 128 Results Recap: Erik Koch vs. Raphael Assuncao

This became a fight of necessity when Raphael Assuncao's original opponent, Manny Gamburyan, pulled out of the fight, and Erik Koch was left without an opponent when Cub Swanson pulled out of UFC on Versus 3. Koch led off the night with a knockout at 2:32 of the first round, which was good enough to fight to be aired on both the Spike TV and PPV broadcasts.

What was the high point of the fight?

The right hook that planted Assuncao's skull on the mat. As Assuncao charged in with a left-right combo, Koch stepped aside, through a right that landed right on the ear, which through off Assuncao's equilibrium and left him defenseless on the floor.

Where do these guys go from here?

Koch should find himself in the top 25 on the Consensus Rankings. I expect we'll see him fight a contender coming off a loss like Michihiro Omigawa or Mike Brown.

With three losses in his last four fights, Assuncao's in danger of falling out of the UFC. At 5'4", Assuncao may also want to consider dropping down to 135 pounds.

Watch it now, later, or never?

If you somehow missed it during its multiple airings last night, you should probably run and check it out. Knockouts are always fun, and this was a solid use of footwork and technique as a counter.
