MMA Mania has a very in-depth look at The Weaknesses of Shogun Rua by AintNoSunshine that is well worth a look for all fans of technical discussion. It's a good counter to yesterday's Judo Chop on the weaknesses of Jon Jones. Will Jon Jones be able to capitalize on the flaws in Mauricio "Shogun" Rua's game?

I read that this morning. It’s a great read, and points clear weaknesses in Shogun’s technique. It’s refreshing to read something where Shogun isn’t put on a 100ft high pedestal for being perfect.

I didn’t realize that happened. Even the most fanatic Shogun supporters (myself included) recognize his faults in wrestling. And he can often be a wild striker. I think it’s pretty well-trod territory.

awesome piece. Spot on about shoguns TDD, if lyoto had better top control could have been a longer fight. i see the thai stance as more of a bad idea than a flaw. Jones is more of a throw TD guy, but if shogun gets through jones that leg will be like a piece of cake to a fat kid for rashad

Except

Jones shot on Bader from like fifty feet away and nailed a takedown. He has the whole wrestling package.

If it seems like everyone around you is an asshole, you are probably an asshole.

true story.

I like his wrestling better than Gsp’s. Its way more dynamic. Jones hits them all Judo/greco/freestyle . gsp’s is more blast double based/freestyle based. (Gsp huggers please don’t berate me. Its just my opinion. )

I never said he ONLY uses clinch throws as takedowns, i just said he more of a throw takedown fighter.

Good article

Crazy how people keep overlooking what JBJ does best is what Rua can’t stop. After the takedown it’s a guessing game though, but strong wrestlers have usually been able to stifle BJJ

who?

Who stifled who?

Well both Bader and Brilz did it to Lil’ Nog recently… and both should’ve won their respective fights, but that’s another subject.

by Shnak on Mar 18, 2011 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions

It was really close though, much much much closer than it should’ve been considering it was a guy considered a Top-5 LHW with great BJJ against a relatively unknown wrestler. It just shows how easily wrestlers can nullify BJJ with a little knowledge of it.

by Shnak on Mar 18, 2011 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions

well it was a very back and forth fight

and brilz ended up in the crucifix and almost subb’d so he didn’t quite nullify Nog’s BJJ.

That’s why a lot of people thought it was so close, because they thought Nog should have smashed him. Watching that fight with a clinical eye, I gave Nog all three rounds easy.

I'd have to give Brilz the second

he very nearly KO’d Nog.

Didn’t it sort of feel like Lil Nog sort of lost that fight too, despite getting the win on his record?

many people believe nog won the bader fight. didnt fight metric call it a draw? anyway.

Also that’s 1 fight. Historically Jiu Jitsu does very well over wrestling.
Couture vs. Nog
Couture vs. Overeem
Coleman vs fedor (sambo is a jiu jitsu off shoot just like bjj)
Maia vs sonnen
Fedor vs. Randleman
Roger vs prangley
Jacare vs anyone
Bj penn vs fitch (before bj gassed) although Fitch is a black belt now.
Mir and lesnar 1-1
I could go on.
Joe rogan has perpetuated a myth.

You can pretty much go down Randleman and Sonnen’s list of losses and assume they’re losses to BJJ’s. A BJJ blackbelt against a wrestler with no defense is successful most of the time. Using Coleman of all people isn’t going to prove a point either. A BJJ Blackbelt against a wrestler with decent defense is a loss all almost all of the time. Couture defended Nog’s submissions, I didn’t realize that Couture fought Overeem though. That’s interesting.

well

i don’t have the time to research but brock and frank mir, sakuraba vs any gracie, bader/ lil nog, sanchez/thiago, fitch/thiago.

by silent.bisonte33 on Mar 18, 2011 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Diego has been training in Bjj for years. He left Jacksons to go to Saulo Ribero's Jiu Jitsu University

Diego holds a brown belt under Saulo and loves Bjj.
Saku is a catch/ and judo guy and a one in a million fighter.
fitch….. well he does fitch people, he is also a black belt.

um..

nate diaz lost to clay guida, joe stevenson, and a questionable loss to gray. all wrestlers. nick? 3 straight losses to wrestlers and UFC gave him his papers

by silent.bisonte33 on Mar 18, 2011 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions

fitch just got his black belt

and they are WRESTLERS. which was my point. yes, they have ADDED all this other stuff, but they are wrestlers. and Mir Brock would be 2-0 if it wasn’t for Steve M.

I think this will all come down to the scramble.

by HaterSlayer on Mar 18, 2011 12:47 PM EDT reply actions

The more I think about it, the more I can see this winding up as Silva/Sonnen, with Bones smothering Shogun for 5 rounds, and maybe just maybe there might be a hail marry sub win again, with Shogun popping his legs up for an armbar/triangle when Bones as a brief lull moment. I also envisioned Jone’s doing a flying leg scissors (they did show Jon practicing the flying leg scissors during one of his training vids sometime this week) on Shogun and blowing out Shogun’s bum knees, like in this vid.

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4yuhq_yasuhiro-yamashita-jpn-sumio-endo-j_sport

Either way I am honestly expecting some sort of dramatic finish from this fight and I’d be sorely disappointed if it goes to a 5 round decision.

It’s all but a given that Jones will be able to get Shogun down often, but the question is how Shogun will be able to react off his back. We’ve never seen Jones out grappled, but Shogun’s grappling is really sharp, and if he can get on top of Jones he has the power to KO in a couple of shots

by bawssauce on Mar 18, 2011 1:36 PM EDT reply actions

Nice article, the analysis seems sound, although some examples are a bit old.

That being said, like most fighters, I think Shogun and his camp are well aware of his weaknesses.

by aTn on Mar 18, 2011 1:44 PM EDT reply actions

There is something to be said about this argument....

The striking level of the guys Shogun has faced compared to Jon Jones.

Overeem=Dutch Kickboxer and current K-1 Champ
Machida=Laser-point accuracy and deadly speed
Lil Nog= Olympic level boxing

not trying to knock Jones but the most I can say for now is unorthodox, long, and wild. I think Shogun has the advantage.

by jrahboy on Mar 18, 2011 5:09 PM EDT reply actions

it's quite a stretch

to say that Lil Nog has Olympic level boxing. He trained with the Cuban & the Brazilian Olympic boxing teams and did some international boxing competitions. He didn’t make the Olympic team

Yeah I’m no expert, but Nog would get killed in a boxing match with an Olympian.
