UFC 128 Pre-Fight Press Conference Video

Leading into UFC 128 we'll have live coverage of the press conference from New York City, including streaming video from the Radio City Music Hall from New York City's Rockefeller Center with Dana White, headliners Mauricio Rua and Jon Jones, co-headliners Urijah Faber and Eddie Wineland, plus Mirko Filipovic and Brendan Schaub and Nate Marquardt and Dan Miller..
Join us at at 12:30 p.m. ET (9:30 p.m. PT) and share your thoughts as the press conference unfolds.
- Shogun Rua: Biggest change I had to make was finding guys with his body type. They have a similar style.HT: UFC.com
- Shogun: The timing was perfect to make the change though.
- Shogun: I don't think Rashad ran from the fight.
- Shogun: I think Rashad tries to stall, play safer. Jones looks to finish.
- Shogun: I know Jones as a fighter, not a person. So I can't comment on any sort of change in personality.
- Shogun: It doesn't bother me that Jones is the favorite. He's won fights decisively. He's fighting in his hometown.
- Jon Jones: I don't find the attention as a distraction. I'm enjoying the ride. It's a dream come true.
- Jones: I meditate a lot on victory.
- Jones: I'm sure Shogun poops like I poop.
- Jones: I absolutely expect the home crowd advantage.
- Jones: I want to show people that, despite where you're from, you can do anything if you put your mind and heart into it.
- Jones: I think everything happens for a reason. I think I might have a feeling of "I was just here yesterday" when I step in the cage.
- Urijah Faber: I've been pretty decorated, but fighting in the UFC is the biggest of them all.
- Dana White: It's a dream for fighters to fight in Madison Square Garden.
- White: When you look at the guys Shogun has beat, it's a pretty distinguished list. He's one of the nastiest guys who's ever fought in MMA.
Watch the UFC 128: Shogun vs. Jones pre-fight press conference video streaming live at 9:30 a.m. PT/12:30 p.m. ET, Wednesday on BloodyElbow.com.

So, let’s see how the UFC has fared with the dangerous “fan interaction” gambit
Fans decide Fight of the Night – retracted after 1 event (UFC124)
Fans asking questions at press conference – terrible, probably will never happen again
Fans give money to watch fights – resounding success
In conclusion fans can only be trusted when they are restricted to transferring money as their form of communication..

Is insufferable at this point. Walking quickly up to Shogun and striking that stupid pose looking into the distance, as if Shogun is intimidated. Shogun didn’t know what he was looking at and looked confused. It’s astounding how thinly veiled Jones ego is. I can’t put the whole thing on Jones’ shoulders though- our country’s celebrity fetish makes this shit really unnatural, and it creates some pretty brutal idiosyncrasies. He’s only 23, still trying to figure out who he is, but also how he wants to be perceived and you can see that he’s having a difficult time reconciling the two. Who know how you or I would handle the same shit….still very annoying though.

Well said. I think Rashad mentioned something that hit home recently about Jones insecurity. He seems to get angry and emotional when even the slightest things are said about him, going back to the Vera buld-up and staredown (though Vera did talk some shit) and the tweets from Bader’s camp. Sure fighters are susceptible to using trash talk as motivation, but I think that Jones is overly sensitive to everything that is said about him. He strikes me as the type that reads what the fans are saying online even though he would say he never visits MMA sites.
It’s not confidence that I see, it’s uncontrollable emotions driven from his own insecurity.
I have a different take on it
See Michael Jordan’s HoF speech. He called out dudes from middle school when he was in his mid-40s. Every perceived slight, every perceived wrong, any time he felt he wasn’t respected, MJ filed that away and used it to fire him up later. The list of those who he thought had wronged him was long that night. He took a ton of shit for bringing up slights from 25+ years ago. He seemed to have to have an enemy to get jacked up to perform.
As much as Jones talks about not seeing the person, I think to some degree, he personalizes ANYTHING said about him that he perceives as less than complimentary and files it away for motivation.
And it worked pretty well for MJ, didn’t it?
"Don't be intimidated by other teams. You guys got bubble gum cards, too. Let's go." - Buck Showalter
It worked very well for Jordan, who still to this day, remains an extremely bitter man even though he has nothing to worry about in his life. Personalizing this stuff is the wrong way to approach it IMO. Marcus Davis still cannot stand Dan Hardy, as Bisping still has beef with Rivera. It’s part of the business for guys like Hardy and Rivera whereas the insecurity of Davis and Bisping does not allow them to make that distinction between it being personal and business.
you mean SHOTGUN, it's officially Shotgun now
and having a feeling Jones is going to be blasted Saturday, double barrel style
Jones' personality doesn't bother me at all
As long as he keeps putting on exciting fights, I don’t care what affectations he takes on. If he wins I hope he takes to wearing a cape, calling himself “The Pope” and insisting that reporters refer to him as “your eminence.”
Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.

You hope he turns into Mike Francesa?

Now that is some topical inside humor.

I can understand people's distaste for his personality
But for some reason, the more they hate on Jones the more I want to cheer for him to win.
@spudsucker
twitter. bitches.
I'm in the same boat
he brings a lot of it on himself, but every time I hear people bitching about him, the rough translation seems to be “I hate that young, rich, successful, incredibly talented guy who’s not doing a very good job of pretending that he’s not special.”

I'm probably just in pre-event psychosis...
but I just can’t remember a more intriguing fight. And to think, if God hadn’t intervened we’d be talking the chances of Hashad getting subbed while wrestlefucking…

UFC is knocking them out of the park this year. I was completely geeked out for Silva-Belfort too, but this one is much closer. I have no idea what is going to happen. I can see either guy winning pretty readily, and that’s awesome.

yup...
each guy has quite a few paths to victory and almost none of them would surprise me (outside of a Jones standing KO)

I liked his personality and perceived humbleness until I found out he had begun signing his autographs with “Champion 2011” already.

me too
I was defending his ass last night, then I saw the first segment of the Countdown, and I was like “holy shit- the haters are right.” Still love the dude as a fighter though….

I agree, he is very exciting but I can find no way to defend him doing that especially when he talks about respecting his opponent.

Please tell me you're fucking joking about that.

He talked about it on the Countdown show.
Personally, I don’t have a problem with him being cocky. As long as it doesn’t adversely effect his performance, there’s nothing wrong with a fighter exuding confidence.

Cocky, I have no problem with.
If the guy wants to be a cocky dick, more power to him. But at least BE a cocky dick, don’t act like an asshole one minute and then refer to yourself in the third person about how humble you are the next. That’s what kind of irks me about Jones.

Yeah
If he gets beat up, he will have to eat some humble pie for sure. That’s the cost of being cocky.
As for flip flopping between cocky and humble, I think that’s just a matter of being young. Everyone wants to seem humble, but he’s also letting some of his brashness exude in recent statements.

I could just as easily see JBJ take the Floyd Mayweather route
not lose and just keep getting cockier and crazier, which would be kind of awesome.

Same here. It makes him more likable when people hate him.

This is a distinction fans fail to consider.
- Shogun: I know Jones as a fighter, not a person. So I can’t comment on any sort of change in personality.
I tend to be biased towards strikers . . . exciting strikers.
