You and me both.

Remember though, thinking that relevant match-ups between highly ranked BW and FW fighters should be aired over fights between gatekeepers, journeymen, and fighters coming off multiple losses makes you an irrational WEC fanboy.

If we're lucky...

And a couple fights finish fast (and Benevidez puts on a good performance like usual) I am sure it’s the first thing they’d be looking to show during the PPV.

However, you could always fire up the Twitter and let DW know we’d all like to see that bout.

I have no goddamn clue.

Cane is coming off two losses and Marshall was let go in his last UFC stint for being a cautious, boring fighter. Yet somehow these two fighters are being aired over the number fucking 2 BW in the world.

At least they broadcast in HD...

I didn’t realize how degraded the picture was with Bellator on MTV2 until I went to MMA Live on my DVR right afterwards. Wasn’t that long ago that it wouldn’t have been a big deal, but being jaded now, I’d watch paint dry in HD over most SD broadcasts.

Luckily for Bellator I’m a junkie of the MMA variety and will continue to watch their events, even if it is on non-HD. Hopefully they can upgrade that down the road.

Really? HD has only been mainstream for a few years. After maybe 5 mins watching I don’t notice anyways. I will admit that SD channels on a lot of fancy HD TVs looks like shit compared to an old SDTV

I thought

that Spike TV got to pick which fights they got? Wasn’t that the issue with Grove bad mouthing how Spike shows the guys in the house and then he got booted off the prelims?

Not saying they’re justified in airing those fights either, I just assumed that Spike would always try to air guys who have been on TUF.

by TMadeBurner on Mar 15, 2011 8:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't get it...

I’d think you’d want the WEC guys on the Spike prelims as much as possible… That’s where the most people are going to be watching (That or FB, anyways), and they consistently put on wild, fast-paced, entertaining fights…. I thought the whole point of th aired prelims was to put on fights that might convince additional people to order the PPV broadcast. I’m dumbfounded.

I am not sure about Assuncao/Koch.

Shalorus and Njokuani are being shown. Plus Faber and Wineland is co-main. That’s damn good considering how stacked this card is.

Don't sleep on Shalorus

Miller is an excellent fighter, but Shalorus has vastly better wrestling credentials and there’s no reason to believe he can’t take the fight to the ground any time he wants. If he were determined to simply take Miller down, I think he should be no worse than even given how MMA matches are scored. However, Shalorus loves to stand and bang. Nevertheless such a fight might actually work out in his favor, given that judges appear to prefer sluggers to tactitcans (see eg Garcia’s fights) and Shalorus has an iron chin.

having watched the shalarous vs varner fight and the shalarous vs bart fight

i cant imagine that he is on miller’s level by any means

however he should have lost both those fights and appeared to only win because he is a slugger which is a valid point

He’s an elite wrestler (with a top ten finish at the Worlds in freestyle wrestling) dressed in a slugger’s clothing however, which means that if he decides to wrestle he can cause problems for just about anyone. At these odds I’m definitely laying down some (notional) dollars on him, although he is a bit of a question mark because of his propensity to slug it out.

I agree with your assessment of Shalorus....

but damn I hope Miller wins that fight. He’s toiled in relative obscurity for a good while now, and with a win here, I don’t know what else he would need to do to be in a contenders line, behind the obvious Pettis/Guida winner and other premier lightweight matchups going on over the coming months.

You are too often blinded by wrestling credentials.

Shalorus gassed something awful against Bartimus and couldn’t even keep Bart down long enough to be effective from top control. Bartimus isn’t on Miller’s level, and neither is Kamal by the looks of it.

Shalarous has great credentials for a skill he never uses in the cage. Shalarous is a talented dude with a really really low fight IQ.

Good summary of Shalorus

I think people are actually overlooking his credentials. Being top 10 in freestyle at some point in the recent past is much more impressive than winning an NCAA championship. Credentials do not equal effective MMA wrestling, but in the absence of significant data points, you should assume that someone with great credentials will be able to impose his will on someone with significantly lesser credentials. (Just to show you I don’t have my head in the sand i’ll note that GSP v. anyone is a counter example; another counter example would be someone like Munoz, who has become a terrible wrestler, despite having excellent credentials. I can distinguish these cases however if you want me to.)

He gassed against Bart because he was going for the finish and failed to get it. This happens fairly frequently. If anything, given that this happened in his previous fight, he, one would hope, wouldn’t repeat the same mistake here.

Shalorus is not the smartest fighter though. If he had a GSP or Fitch like approach to the game, I’d be jumping up and down yelling about how this line is mispriced. I think it’s at least mildly mispriced because he has a clear path to victory (take Miller down and lie on him) and I don’t think that Miller will blow him out standing. At the very least Shalorus’s chin will keep him in it long enough to allow his wrestling or a haymaker to turn the tide of this fight.

He didn't look that fresh against Varner either.

Shalorus’ credentials are impressive. His MMA performances have been anything but. Ultimately, I feel like that is what should be important when assessing his chances in an MMA fight, not how he ranked in the international wrestling scene.

"[UFC]’s a great rush, eh? It makes your sphincter get real tight." - Harold Howard

by lowellthehammer on Mar 15, 2011 7:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I am basing it on his fights

Against Varner, he failed to complete a couple TDs IIRC early in the fight — basically he caught his leg after Varner landed a leg kick and failed to finish. Once he committed to the TD he secured it without any issue, and that was in the third round so if he was gassed it didn’t impact his performance enough to prevent the TD. He took Jensen down with ease and Jensen had a background in college wrestling. The only time I’ve seen him struggle was against Bart and he had gassed. I stated above why I don’t think that will happen again. Basically when he’s wrestled he hasn’t had any problems taking down middling collegiate wrestlers who are around Miller’s caliber as you would expect given Shalorus’s background. Thus, I’m wedding his credentials with results.

If Shalorus implements a decent game plan, he has the tools to win. He could also win the fight by landing a haymaker or just playing it by ear and landing a couple takedowns. He has a great chin but perhaps suspect cardio. I like him at +240.

Where do you put the odds for this fight?

you're overestimating his credentials....
in the absence of significant data points

What you take as an absence of data points, are actually data points. We’ve seen absolutely no evidence to tell us that those credentials have transferred over to MMA, Instead, we have data saying that he’s been unable to use that wrestling, which is more valuable to assessing him as an MMA fighter than his performance in another sport.

by John Danaher's Hair on Mar 15, 2011 7:04 PM EDT up reply actions

See the above resopnse.

He’s taken down everyone except Bart when he was gassed. How is that not exactly what you would expect from him?

What were King Mo’s credentials like prior to entering the sport? How highly regarded was he?

by lowellthehammer on Mar 15, 2011 7:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Very highly regarded. He was rep for the US for three straight years (2005 -2007) which is very impressive. His best finish at the worlds was 9th (i think). He also won an NCAA championship. John Smith (legendary US wrestler) once said Mo was the only person who could beat Cael Sanderson (in the US).

1) Shalorus may have better credentials, but the dude never wrestles in MMA.

2) He doesn’t belong in the same cage as Miller- I can’t see Miller having any trouble here.

He’ll have a hard time pinning Miller to the mat on his back. BJJ black belts Mark Bocek and Gleison Tibau couldn’t, and the one time Maynard made the mistake of taking him down Miller had his leg before he knew what happened.

Oddsmakers don't make lines based on respect, they make them so that they profit the most.

If you want to complain about people that don’t respect the champion, you should be complaining about the betting public.

Oddsmakers sole goal is to set the lines in such a way that they win no matter which fighter wins the fights. This means that heavily bet lines are a very good reflection of how the money has come in on the fight. (If too much money is coming in on Bones, they’ll increase Shogun’s pay out (ie, make him more of an underdog) so that bets start coming in on Shogun and the payouts for the bookies balance themselves out.)

screw the oddsmakers...

The lack of respect from the UFC is more unsettling. Since when did they do a half of a Primetime episode to only hype one fighter in the Main??? And the challenger, at that! Ming=boggled.

I dont think the public bets based on a lack of respect though lol. Maybe if the poster had said the odds were insulting rather than disrespectful you guys would get it.

I was wondering about Jon Jones' comments regarding the odds

He said that the oddsmakers were counting on Shogun winning and therefore made him (Jones) the favorite.

Isn’t that backwards though? If Shogun wins as the underdog, the house is going to be paying out quite a bit more than they would if he won as the favorite, no?

Thanks

by Luke Nelson on Mar 15, 2011 6:33 PM EDT reply actions

yes...

it was a totally misinformed (that’s not what the odds are telling us), or misguided (trying to be humble) statement.

by John Danaher's Hair on Mar 15, 2011 7:10 PM EDT up reply actions

yes its backwards

if you bet/risk $100 on shogun and he wins you will take home a total of $270 ($100 original bet + the $170).

You would have to bet/risk $210 in order to win a profit of $100 if jones wins ($220 original bet + $100 winning = total take home $320)

I'm insanely invested in the main card of this event

I mean, most of the time, there are guys I like and guys I’d prefer to win, but this is different.

I passionately root for Cro Cop, Dan Miller, and Jim Miller every time they figtht. I passionately root against Urijah Faber every time he fights.

The main event is actually the one where I am just about even, I don’t really care as much who wins this one.

The one thing that sucks is most of the guys I want to win, Cro Cop and Dan, are underdogs. I want Faber to lose and he is a favorite. Jim is only one I’m rooting for that ‘should’ win.

And I would say I am leaning toward Jones though, because I think he gets a lot of unwarrented hate, and between the Jones fanboys and the Shogun/Pride fanboys, the latter get on my nerves a LOT more.

Pretty much everything they mentioned above

I know he’s a good fighter, but I can’t stand virtually everything about him.

I just get the vibe that if we knew eachother, I probably wouldn’t be able to stand talking to him for more than a few minutes.

I mean, it’s not JUST that he is cocky, its the way he is, plenty of guys are confident, but it’s just his attitude about it.

I dislike Mir as well for the same reason, you can tell he thinks he’s like the best sh!t since sliced bread, but he tries to hide it behind his demeanor, when he critiques other fighters he has such a condescending attitude about it.

Diaz I rather like though, just because of his style, not a fan of Diaz the pot smoker, or Diaz the mean mugger.

i don't know what i liked more brown knocking him around for 5 rounds or aldo

mmm it would have to be the aldo fight (superman a.k.a faber because of the strong butt chin) relies heavy on his physical skills not so much technique to beat oppenents. when he fought aldo he turned back into clark kent. he just looked lost after a while he put up a good fight. he just had a look like how is this guy so much faster than me . why can’t i do what i want to do.
also that was how brown caught him in there first fight. springing back elbow off the cage really? this is not lucha libre and he paid for it. he should have created some space and reset himself.

and someone I knew(barely) was being very cocky about ‘knowing’ Faber was going to win, spouting off all this stuff about ’He’s going to get his belt back’ and I just kept saying ’we’ll see dude, we’ll see’

Safe to say I loved the result of the fight.

As far as underdogs go, I like Pellegrino, Philippou and maybbeee CC.

Catone has done nothing to impress me and he hasn’t fought in over a year. Plus, he was going to move down to WW but now he’s fighting at 195. Philippou seems like a strong bet at +200.

I don’t love CC in this fight but Schaub has never fought a striker of CC’s caliber.

War Shogun

I’m going to say Shogun is slightly undervalued on the theory that Shogun’s knee is actually healthy. I feel more confident that his knee is healthy now that I’ve learned (thanks to Orcus’s transcription of an interview with Shogun) that Shogun knew he would fight the winner of Jones-Bader and had an opportunity to defer the title fight but went ahead and said he wanted to fight anyway.

A one sided case for a healthy Shogun:
1. A healthy Shogun could set a pace that wears Bones out; Bones looked tired in the third against Bonnar).
2. Shogun is a human weapon and is one of the best finishers ever.
3. Shogun is very, very good at BJJ and I think he’ll be able to avoid damage on the ground and potentially sweep Jones (using leg locks).
4. Shogun’s chin is outstanding.

let me reply to your questions sir

1. how many fights ago was when jones fought bonnar. also how many crazy moves did jones pull off on bonnar. bonnar is always game and not a bum he is hard to control.
2. i can’t argue on that
3. hmm going for the leg lock/sweep might not work in the early rounds. if jones tires it will work easy. with shogun coming off the surgery a ground battle is not where he wants the fight.
4. also can’t argue with that but if jones gets it down and gets a good position. the elbows won’t knock rua out but enough in a row will lose him the match.
