It is not his own special. Its a brand new show that will feature a different fighter every episode. Its fitting that jones is the first one to be on the show.

I don’t think that is quite fair, win or lose Jones is going to be a huge star for the UFC. He is complete marketing package: super talented, well educated, and well spoken.

Also the fact that he is African-American can’t be underestimated in a sport that is criticized (fairly or unfairly) for lacking in diversity.

I was working at an inner city Chicago high school at the time of the TUF 10 finale and going into the card all the African-American students could talk about was Kimbo. But the Monday afterward they were all about Jon Jones, I don’t think it was a mistake Jones was put on the same card with Kimbo.

Good point about Jones on that card, hadn’t really given that much thought before…

Since Jones is so young and hyped

it’s win-win for the UFC. In my fanpost I mention how Jones’ hype will get transferred to Shogun if the Brazilian can get the win. And since Jones is so young, and he didnt get a full camp, etc…, they can just feed him a few more fighters then give him another title shot in a year or so.

there were only 7 months between the Lyoto fights, by the time he fights Jones that would be 10 months. He also didn’t have knee surgery before he fought Machida.

No, but he had an appendectomy iirc a few weeks before, as well as fighting with a torn ACL…

84 inch reach!

its absurd how far away he can hit you from. Also for those that think Shogun is gonna leg kick Jones into submission should realize that in order for Shogun to get in range to leg kick Jones he himself has to get within the 84 Inch reach zone of Jones. If you think Jackson hasnt drilled this for hours into Jones then you mistaken.

Jules: Normally, both your asses would be dead as fucking fried chicken, but you happen to pull this shit while I'm in a transitional period so I don't wanna kill you, I wanna help you. Your still down playing Jones.

Has Shogun tried leg kicking someone with an 84 inch reach, no he hasnt. Im not saying he cant but its going to a lot harder then him leg kicking Machida. Also Jones will be way more prepared for Shogun then Shogun will be for Jones. He was helping Rashad train for Shogun since the beginning.

I think Jones is a great fighter

I just think at this point in his career a guy with the offensive diversity like Shogun is likely to get the better of him.

And I think the short turn around doesn’t have a huge effect on Shogun, the man has been fighting since Jones was in high school. And has trained with some amazing strikers, I think Jones’ judo and wrestling pose the biggest threat to Rua, but I’m interested to see how much Jones’ sub defense has improved.

by T.P. Grant on Mar 15, 2011 12:11 AM EDT up reply actions

See this is where im lost.

People act as if he has such an amazing sub game, yet Jones has more sub wins then Shogun. Shogun tapped a guy that had gone 1-5 in his last 6 four by SUB. I think people are giving that sub more credit then its worth.

Jules: Normally, both your asses would be dead as fucking fried chicken, but you happen to pull this shit while I'm in a transitional period so I don't wanna kill you, I wanna help you. Shogun doesn't use his subs much

because he is got that Chute Boxe attitude, but by all accounts he is a 100% legit black belt in BJJ. He has nice leg locks and a very underrate and aggressive guard.

by T.P. Grant on Mar 15, 2011 12:20 AM EDT up reply actions

Will see.

I still want to see how he reacts with someone that has such great top control like Jones has. Also Half of Shoguns loses are buy sub, so i wouldnt be surprised if Jones goes for one. It probably wont happen but im just saiyan.

Shogun survived Arona and Little Nog

and beyond a front headlock series Jones hasn’t shown even an interest in submission offense.

Shogun got caught in choke a decade ago by Sobral and his RNC loss to Forrest wasn’t due to lack of defense, it was mostly because he’d gotten the hell beaten out of him and gassed badly.

I don’t think Sub defense is a problem for Shogun.

by T.P. Grant on Mar 15, 2011 12:32 AM EDT up reply actions

I think Jones top control is better the Little Nog, also that was before he came off of his third knee surgery. That is such a question mark in this fight.

by RJshock 305 on Mar 15, 2011 12:36 AM EDT up reply actions

totally agree there

Shogun’s two historic weakness are gas tank and defensive wrestling.

That is a bad combination going into a 5 round fight against a strong wrestler. If Jones can get a takedown and avoid being put in the guard he could grind Shogun down.

by T.P. Grant on Mar 15, 2011 12:38 AM EDT up reply actions

That is why this is such a great fight.

Both people are technically the worst match up for one another. Imsure Rogan will say “The best way to beat Shogun is to be able to remotely stand with him, have great takedowns, and very skilled top control. Well that is exactly what Jon Jones has” Willing to beat my laptop he says that.

Jones 30 min special vs Shogun's 30 sec commercial

As I stated in another post this is Hendo/Shields all over again but in the UFC. This “special” automatically shows who Zuffa/UFC wants to win this match. Not only that, it also devalues Shogun as a serious threat. Sure they may gain some new fans in a different demographic, but where does this leave Shogun when he wins? Despite his injuries, Shogun has accomplished a lot and the newer fans should be exposed to his past accomplishments. This half hour show should have at least been done like the Cotto/Mayorga pre-fight show.

its not just a jones special

Its a brand new show. Im guessing it will be about the challengers for the titles. Theres no reason for the UFC to try and promote Shogun. No matter what they do the casual fans will not flock to him. Jones on the other hand has what it takes to be known by the casual fan. I have casual fan friends who know who jones is…….and they have no idea that shogun was the champ.

Casual fans may not flock to him, but the UFC needs to market their Champion.

Boxing does a good job of it and makes every match look epic before it happens, regardless who the champion or challenger is. They have enough footage from both competitors to draw in the casual fan. Shogun’s KO’s of Rampage, Liddell, and Machida are enough to gain the attention of any fan. As for the new show, they are using WWE style marketing to reach out to the casual fanbase and is further proof that they are banking on Jones winning. I dont foresee the UFC creating a new show for challengers, this is a one time deal because Jones is the first talent of this “caliber” that was built up.
