We haven't heard much from fighters about this aside from some Randy Couture in the Josh Gross ESPN story and Paul Daley via his facebook. One of the things that came to my mind when I thought of ways for the UFC to put on the superfights sooner rather than later was that there are probably guys whose contracts come up in the next six months who are interested in changing promotions.
Especially interesting to me is the opinions of two groups of fighters....Guys in the UFC who aren't good enough to be on the main cards and the Strikeforce champions.
For the UFC guys who are a notch below the best, (think older guys who never quite reached the top) are they are going to want to go over to Strikeforce pretty quickly? Joe Stevenson comes to mind as a guy who could main card Strikeforce, perhaps Nate Marquardt could challenge for the title. There is a handful of lightweights who I'm sure would welcome a change of scenery. In the coming days I expect to hear from some of these guys about the opportunity to fight on a bigger stage.
As for the title holders, I'd like to know what their contract length is. Diaz it seems is locked up for a little more than a year. Overeem? Jacare? Melendez? I have no idea what they are, does anyone have that info? I would like to hear from these fighters as well to see who is chomping at the bit to become a UFC fighter. Melendez seems like a likely candidate to try to get over to the UFC as soon as possible. I could see Overeem winning the GP and wanting to get right into the mix in the UFC.
So while it seems that we may have to wait a few years for this to play out in our favor, vis a vis superfights, we could be in for a steady stream of interesting individual personel moves while Strikeforce continues to operate "business as usual"
