There are a few questions I have been unable to answer in the wake of Zuffas' purchase of Strikeforce. After the jump I will present the questions and seek any input from the BE community.
The first thing that came to my mind was elbows. Strikeforce currently do not use elbows to a downed opponent. Why Zuffa mandate that Strikeforce use elbows? I think this is a real possibility, Dana mentioned that Zuffa might "tweek" Strikeforce.
Next, will Strikeforce fighters still be able to take fights in others orgs? Now, Shinya Aoki fought Gilbert Melendez in a fighter exchange. I don't see Zuffa allowing co promotion, but I do see Zuffa cashing in on some potential great fights. With this question in mind, it is possible to see any other the contracted Strikeforce fighters seek out a fight in the UFC.
Will we finally get to see Fedor fight Randy? Now, before you flame me, hear me out. It isn't a reach to see The Natural beaten by Machida. Now, if that happens, wouldn't Randy be on the bubble? and, since Randy has always wanted this fight and Dana loves Randy, couldnt we see Randy sent "down" to Strikeforce? Once in Strikeforce, what matchup would be a bigger fight for both Fedor and Randy at this point in their careers? I could see that fight being a ratings bonanza.
What happens to Scott Coker? How about Frank Shamrock? Josh Barnett? Paul Daley? And finally Pat Militech? Dana doesnt have a good relationship with any of these fighters. Frank and Pat have made it clear their feelings about Dana. And Scott Coker is a fight promoter. What happens to Coker? Does he become a full time employee of Zuffa? Or, maybe take the money after the Strikeforce brand is folded and start another promotion? I would think Zuffa would build in a non compete clause into the purchase.
Finally, Will we see the fighters form a union? The power appears too be all Zuffas' at the time being. One measure to help neutralize this power is collective bargining. Is it possible to see a MMA fighters union? Something similiar to the NFLPA? MLBPA? or NBAPA? A union is the only recourse I see to help bring up the mid to lower tier fighters.
